In 1546 Francesco da Sangallo declared, “There are [many women] in Flanders and in France and even in Italy who paint in such away that in Italy their pictures are held in high esteem.”1 One such woman was Caterina van Hemessen, a Sixteenth-Century Dutch Portraitist. Trained by her father, who was an accomplished painter himself, van Hemessen painted portraits of herself, her sister, and prominent individuals from her community. She lived a relatively long life (from 1528 to after 1587), but curiously, her last painting is dated just after her marriage to the local church organist, Christian de Morien, in …

The intent and purpose for which this grant was awarded was to assist me in my goal of producing a well-illustrated children’s book. My greatest artistic interest lies in depicting other cultures, and my desire is to educate children of these cultures through my paintings. I was excited to work on my project and create my choreography. I studied out the music and broke it down into counts. I found the different accents of each phrase. I interviewed owners of sixteen dance studios in the Provo and Salt Lake areas to examine: 1. the startup and operating expenses of a dance studio; 2. studio advertising techniques; 3. studio, class, and performance arrangement ; 4. in-house merchandising opportunities; 5. cost-profit scenarios; 6. studio integration with the community. I will present the compiled results at the Utah Dance Education Organization conference, as well as making them available to students in BYU’s dance program.

The Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition is the second largest piano competition in the United States. Established in 1976 at Brigham Young University by Dr. Paul Pollei, the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition was given its name in 1977 to honor the world-renowned Greek pianist, who had strong ties to the Utah Symphony and symphony director, Maurice Abravanel. Since its inception, the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition has grown tremendously in size and has since moved the headquarters to the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The ability to choreograph is one of the most important skills a dancer can possess, particularly when preparing to be a teacher. This semester, I focused on choreography within the Ballroom Dance Genre to further develop my skills. I choreographed three different styles, the American Smooth Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. Each of these dances varies greatly in style which gave me an opportunity to experiment with different types of choreography.

Born in the rural heart of the Dominican Republic, Dominican folk dance has evolved along a trajectory taking it from its backcountry origins to become integrated as a fundamental part of Dominican culture. In fact, dances such as the merengue and the bachata are not only staples of social gatherings, but they have increased in sophistication and complexity to achieve representation on the public stage. When Ukrainians migrated to Canada in the early 1900’s, they found themselves in a completely different cultural environment. To help support each other in this foreign environment the Ukrainians participated in many cultural activities, one of which was staged Ukrainian folk dance. In the 1990’s staged Ukrainian dance in Canada began to change because of the immigration of choreographers from Ukraine. With the fall of the Soviet Union, many choreographers became unemployed and immigrated to Canada to work with the Ukrainian dance movement there. I spent three weeks in Ireland this summer studying the culture, history, and especially the dance of that country. I wanted to show that Irish dance has played a pivotal role in preserving Ireland’s cultural identity since before the spread of Christianity. I focused my time on studying the historical climate of Ireland from its roots to current times, learning how dance evolved from its early communal roots to its current status, and researching the role of costumes and their development. My goal in approaching this project was to capture the unique and unconventional beauty found in the geographical layout and biological make-up of the Great Salt Lake and surrounding areas. The purpose of this study is to examine differences in eye-tracking patterns between high and low risk groups of young adult women (based on the presence or absence of eating-disordered cognitions) using Scan Path Analysis. Recently, the BYU Communication Research Center purchased eye-tracking equipment from Applied Science Laboratories in Boston, MA. This equipment allows researchers to measure eye-movements in milliseconds across both still and dynamic images in real time. Data include not only the scan path or actual gaze trail, but also fixations (points of pause) and pupil expansion.

Greeting cards are a special way of saying I care about you and what is happening in your life. In addition, the illustration is a primary factor in selecting a particular card to buy. In stores, I studied existing LDS cards and found most are not ascetically pleasing or artistic. To improve this, I developed a line of cards with exciting color and a twist to the usual themes.

The cult of Madonna dell’Arco is centered at a large pilgrimage church several miles outside the city of Naples on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. The shrine attracts thousands of pilgrims every year who come from all over the Campania region of southern Italy to venerate a miracle-working fresco of the Virgin and Child. This image of Madonna dell’Arco, or the “Madonna of the Arch,” first gained its reputation for supernatural powers in the 1450s.
