This project began as a desire to try my hand at making a graphic novel. I’d never done it before. Neither had my classmates. We had also never made a collaborative art project in the way that the animation program makes a film each year. Those two desires culminated in a 12-person team compiling an anthology of graphic novels to address illiteracy by helping students ages 9-14 get excited and stay excited about reading. Sixteen women’s portraits grace the capitals of four piers at the two main entrances to the Salt Lake City and County Building, a building which though controversial at the time, serves today as the icon of the city’s logo. This creative project compared two case studies in theatrical producing. Simply put, being a producer is being in charge of finding the material to produce (i.e. a play, musical, dance program etc.), making all arrangements to put that material on stage, and being financially responsible for the project from the beginning to end. Commercial theatre “operates without subsidy and is centered in New York City.¹” Other types of theatre that were a part of this project were non-profit, regional, community and educational theatre but will be referred to as non-profit theatre.

The purpose of this project was two fold. First, we wanted to create a literacy tool that could be used by educators to help bridge the gap between picture books and novels. Second, we wanted to expand our skills and knowledge through the art form of sequential storytelling. It was interesting because as we began this journey our desire to help others was the main goal. But over the year, I’ve found that I, myself, will be one of the largest beneficiaries of this project.

Cross-casting in performances has effected outrage and social dilemmas in audiences, despite the important cultural messages those characters display. Since its beginning as a play, women have been cast as the young boy Peter in Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan through inspiration from the young deaths of his brother and childhood friend, who will always remain in their youth. In order to capture that youthful innocence, females have been cast as Peter. This choice in casting was also made to achieve androgyny and transcend gender by blurring gender lines.

Critics have overanalyzed the portrayal of the femme fatale in film noir as female ruthless seduction in attempts to overpower men. However, a paramount aspect of the femme fatale has been under analyzed—women’s use of and exploitation of fashion. In film noir, Gilda particularly showcases the importance of fashion in the film’s plot. Gilda’s undressing and dressing in the film signifies the multifarious personalities and complexity of the femme fatale character.
