“Interaction, the direct effect that one kind of particle has on another, any of four fundamental ways in which elementary particles and bodies can influence each other, classified as strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational (www.dictionary.com).” Our interest in interaction and collaboration began the semester before we started our ORCA research. We took a movement analysis class and partnered together on several assignments. Walking down the streets of Vienna, my eyes pass over new faces and names, wondering if I will ever find something familiar. I think of all those that would be familiar in a different time: Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Schoenberg. But there is one face I am looking for that few others would recognize; it is a woman’s face, a woman who composed, taught music, and worked with Schoenberg. This woman was Vilma Weber von Webenau, who saw many decades of progress and destruction in her life from 1875 to 1953.

From the outside the ‘Azm Palace is almost indiscernible amongst a maze of souqs, restaurants, offices and homes in the old city in Damascus. Much more than a building, it is an icon of the political and cultural heritage of the Syrian people. Constructed in 1749 by As’ad Pasha Al ‘Azm, the Syrian governor appointed by the Ottoman court, the palace took three years to build, and occupied the majority of the craftsmen from the guilds in Damascus and the united provinces of Sidon, Tripoli and Hama. The legend of King Arthur is unmatched in valor and glory as well as tragedy. Because of this, Arthurian works are continually created in every media. I have joined in this effort by illustrating a series of book jackets for T. H. White’s literary series The Once and Future King. The five books in this series are titled: The Sword in the Stone, The Queen of Air and Darkness, The Ill-Made Knight, The Candle in the Wind, and The Book of Merlyn. Together they introduce a myriad of themes, moods, and characters that create a complex story.

Tapa cloth is one of Tonga’s most treasured possessions. Each design painted on the surface of the pounded bark contains cultural value and significance. The process of making a full piece of tapa is long and rigorous, which adds to the value of the piece. Tapa cloth is traditionally given at two major life events: weddings and funerals. Before a wedding takes place, the family of the bride presents a large amount of tapa to the family of the groom. In a funeral setting, it is given to the family of the deceased.

One challenge for LDS journalists is finding a way to combine gospel principles with the mission of journalism to; according to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, seek truth, “promote the flow of information,” and “stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.” Contemporary journalism has done a good job of seeking truth and promoting information flow, but has endured one scandal after another in which journalists have violated ethical standards.

In 1889, a revival of early instruments no longer used (then and now) was undertaken by the Société des Instruments Anciens. The purpose of this revival was to study and practice instruments once preferred but now almost completely unused and unknown in practice and performance. Among these instruments were the clavicembalo, the viola da gamba, and the viol d’amore. These instruments are still almost unknown to our concert rooms today. The history of the melodrama Gänseliesel by Luise Greger and Emilie Riedel combines two of the most prevalent images of Germany: folklore and the shadow of World War II. Premiered at the Baden Baden Stadttheater on December 10, 1933 it features a host of fairy tale characters including dwarves, a frog prince, and – like the Grimm’s fairy tales – a little goose girl in an enchanted forest. My project began with a flight to Lusaka, Zambia with a non-profit organization based in America Fork, Mothers Without Borders. The program consisted of daily service activities, nightly dinners with a Zambian family, and lodging in a hostel in Lusaka. Every morning we rode a bus to a government school in Lusaka, where we taught classes in nutrition, first aid, hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention, arts and crafts, and recreation. I personally taught hygiene, using glitter transferred from hand to hand to show how germs move and demonstrating washing hands removes germs. In 1829, Ottoman Emperor Mahmud II issued a proclamation mandating that all men under his rule must replace their traditional clothing with the “modern” European-style jacket and trousers.1 The interest and appeal of Europe had never been so publicly sanctioned in Ottoman history. The western influence was perhaps most greatly felt in outlying provinces like Damascus, whose government had long been semi-autonomous under local governors, including the Azem family, residents of the Azem Palace. Encaustic painting has a very deep tradition in the visual arts. The technique was used as far back as 100 AD, its roots established in Greece where beeswax was used as caulking in the joints of barges. Eventually the Greeks mixed pigments with the beeswax, adding an aesthetic value to the barges. These painted warships led Greek artists to use beeswax in an innovative way—on flat easel paintings.

Lithography is a form of printmaking where images are hand printed on a press, using either stones or aluminum plates to hold the inked image.
