To present to the reader the development of New Mexico as portrayed in its widely varied character types, and to show its Empire Builders through the mirror of fiction is the goal in which this thesis has in view.

A secondary purpose will be accomplished if, by means of the excerpts presented, interest in reading the books in their entirety shall lead to a broader knowledge of the growing bibliography of Southwestern fiction.

By 1929 and 1930 the popularity and the increasing use of the cluster form caught the attention of most careful readers of fiction. Like all other nations America too has had her birth in the literally world. Her beginning has not been less forceful than other nations. We find that English literature, undivided in the past, at the end of the nineteenth century has four divisions: British, American, Canadian, and Australian. The British is still the most important since it has the greatest literary background. But the steadily growing American literature ranks second to it. We glory in this heritage as much as the British because we feel that it belongs to us as well, and prize this tremendous possession

The magazine in America has never been made a subject of exhaustive and definite research. Though the study is interesting and informative few have cared to resign themselves to it because of the evidently meager returns and the scarcity of accurate material. An occasional remark concerning the DIAL or the NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW is all that is heard about the magazines previous to 1850. The trials and tortures of the magazines and their sponsors have been forgotten more readily than is deserved. Thls study, Some Aspects of the Intellectual Poise of George Robert Gising, had its inception in a course in The Novel, an Intepretation of Life, offered by Doctor Frederick A. Stuff in the summer session of the University of Nebraska in 1926. More narrowly, it began with that part of the course treating of the mode in literature known as realism. In one reference, Wilson Follett's The Modern Novel, was found the following statement relative to the novels of George Gissing, an author of whom the writer of this thesis had not previously heard.

The verse herein printed was written by students now in residence at the University of Nebraska. The first poem in the book received the prize of fifty dollars offered by the class of 1898, and the second poem the prize of twenty-five dollars offered by the Vestals, an organization of girls in the College of Arts and Sciences. The committee chose twenty poems, which were submitted for the final award to Christopher Morley, John G. Neihardt and Percy MacKaye.
