The Use Of The Blueprinting Process On Fiber, Lisa D. Larson

This thesis is a summary of what one student has done with the process of blueprinting as applied to fiber. Persons interested in the dyeing or painting of warps for weaving may benefit in reading this paper as it introduces another facet of warp application.

The blueprinting process used is the same technique engineers use to reproduce plans and drawings. It is a nonsilver photographic technique that makes use of ferric salts which, when mixed with certain other chemicals and exposed to ultraviolet light, form a colored byproduct.

Four Buyid coins in the collection of t he American Numismatic Society, struck between 358-68 H. /A.D. 968-79 at two mints in Jibal province, illustrate a phenomenon unique in the history of Islamic coinage. They concern the status of a die engraver named al-Hasan b. Muhammad. A silver dirham bearing his signature was first noted by George C. Miles and published in 1938. It was at that time the only Islamic coin known to bear the signature of a die engraver. More recently, four additional coins have been located which shed more light upon the career of this artisan. The purpose of the weaver and the place of the craftsperson through history has developed from being purely utilitarian to a medium of personal visual expression. Early man used weaving as a functional craft building structures and making cloth to protect himself from his environment. Medieval weaving was artistic and utilitarian, it was used as decoration and insulation in housing. With the advent of new architectural advances of the Renaissance weaving was no longer required to function as housing insulation. After a brief review of Tunisian geography and history, the differences between urban and rural arts and crafts are discussed. Chapters II and III deal with the various raw materials that are used in textile arts, their transformation into a spun and dyed thread and the archaic methods and tools employed. The looms and weaving techniques are described in detail to illustrate the extraordinary skill of the weavers and the many weeks or months of patient work that the women spend to complete one textile. Hard-times of the Dakota Territory demanding strenuous physical labor compelled the investigator to study the clothing and dressmaking needs of pioneer women 1861-1889. This historical study of costume provides an insight into the life styles [sic] and the role of pioneer women as they interpreted clothing into their physical and utilitarian needs in adapting to the new frontier. According to the Continuation of the chronicles of Theophanes the Bryas palace of Theophilus (829-842) was built in imitation of an Arab palace. The present inquiry into its Islamic source offers a new interpretation of the Bryas palace within the context of Middle Byzantine secular architecture and the development of court ceremonial. ::?revious studies have concentrated upon locating Bryas in efforts to determine the extent of Islamic impact on the architecture of Byzantium.
