Adventures With Don Quixote: Examination And Treatment, Katarzyna Bator Aug 2018

Adventures With Don Quixote: Examination And Treatment, Katarzyna Bator

Art Conservation Master's Projects

The third edition of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha from the collection of University at Buffalo Library was examined and treated. A proposed timeline of repairs was constructed based on information gathered through historical research, multiband imaging, x-radiography, and microscopy. The analysis identified at least four possible sewing events and revealed differences in fiber morphology of the papers composing the textblock. The study of past interventions guided the current conservation treatment. Old repairs were kept intact where possible, and the textblock was rebound in a conservation style hybrid structure that resembles the current …

Tanegashima: The Conservation Treatment And Research Of Two Japanese Matchlock Muskets, Katrina Zacharias

Art Conservation Master's Projects

In the fall of 2016, two Japanese matchlock muskets, called Tanegashima, were brought to the SUNY Buffalo State College Art Conservation Department for research, analysis and treatment. The firearms consist of steel, brass, silver and hardwood components. First, the history and fabrication methods of Japanese firearms were researched to try and establish a date, maker and provenance. In addition to the previous information, analysis was conducted of the materials, focusing primarily on identifying the original finishes of the barrel and stock, to determine a treatment approach.

Creativity’S Risk To Design, Con Kennedy Aug 2018

Creativity’S Risk To Design, Con Kennedy

Conference papers

The competencies of designers can be summed up in one word: Creativity. Creativity would seem to be the most critical skill of any design practitioner’s repertoire and is a core component of innovation and entrepreneurship. In general; creativity is considered to be a positive thing, generating positive outcomes for design enterprises and their clients. Designers utilise their creative skills to solve problems for clients, and to develop design ideas and to run their design enterprises. However, the perception of creativity and the creative worker outside the paradigm of design differs from the view within, and therefore a negative opinion of …

Risk Assessment And Conservation Treatment Of Visual Poetry In A Research Library Collection, Michelle Smith Aug 2018

Risk Assessment And Conservation Treatment Of Visual Poetry In A Research Library Collection, Michelle Smith

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A risk assessment was conducted on a collection of 135 works of visual poetry designated as "poetry objects" in the Poetry Collection at University at Buffalo Libraries. A survey instrument was created to allow for identification of existing condition problems in order to predict future issues and quantify risks of damage resulting from three sources: 1) method of storage, 2) presence of chemically unstable materials, and 3) user handling. The results of the risk assessment were summarized and provided to The Poetry Collection along with recommendations for reducing risk to the collection. Method of storage was determined to be the …

Repairing The Restored: Conserving A Mid-19th Century Hand-Colored Aquatint Etching, Allison Brewer Aug 2018

Repairing The Restored: Conserving A Mid-19th Century Hand-Colored Aquatint Etching, Allison Brewer

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A mid-nineteenth century aquatint and etching print with hand coloring was admitted for conservation treatment to the Garman Family Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College. The print was in very poor condition upon arrival. Investigating the print using materials analysis helped deduce some of the original materials in the manufacturing of the print as well as non-original materials used to restore it. Ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) imaging revealed many damages and repairs to the support. Transmission-Fourier transform infrared microscopy (Transmission-FTIR) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS) were used to confirm the presence of a varnish layer, x-ray fluorescence …

Poseidon's Music Box Sculpture, Guy Cooper Aug 2018

Poseidon's Music Box Sculpture, Guy Cooper

Postgraduate

Selecting public art that pleases a general audience can be a challenging task and is often left sitting either too safe or too abstract in the hope of pleasing the public or ensuring it is defined as ‘Art’. ‘Sound sculpture’ can provide a modern interactive take on public art, incorporating both visual and auditory elements to help drive public interest.

This creative project detailed in this exegesis is based upon the creation of a large scale kinetic sculpture entitled Poseidon’s Music Box. The Sculpture functions as a solar powered music box, performing a pre-composed score which also forms the basis …

Basket Case: Treatment And Analysis Of A Northwestern California Basket, Stephanie Cashman

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A northwestern California basket was brought to the SUNY Buffalo State Garman Art Conservation Department for treatment and analysis in the fall of 2016. The basketry materials, colorants and fabrication methods were investigated. Material analysis was carried out using polarized light microscopy (PLM) to identify the types of woody plant materials used. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) were performed to better understand possible colorants. Mockups and a 3D model, both digital and printed, were created to gain insight into the construction techniques. Analysis confirmed the baskets place of origin …

Toxins In The Collection: Museum Awareness And Protection, Nellie Slocum

Museum Studies Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss museum policies regarding toxic materials used in the creation of an object or added to it as a preservation or pesticide technique. After surveying different museums, it has been found that many museums are unaware of what parts of their collections contain toxic materials. Because of this unfamiliarity with the danger these materials might pose, many museums to not have policies in place regarding them. Toxins in collection items may pose a threat to museum staff who are working with them on a day to day basis. Toxic materials are prevalent in …

An Investigation Into Crack Patterns And The Temperature At Which They Occur, Carolyn Hoover Aug 2018

An Investigation Into Crack Patterns And The Temperature At Which They Occur, Carolyn Hoover

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Recently, a large abstract painting entitled Dialogue (2007) by Lee Ufan was donated to the SUNY Buffalo State Art Conservation program as a study piece. Due to disfiguring horizontal cracking throughout the painting’s surface in the white margins, the painting was considered a total loss that no longer represented the artist’s intentions or work. The intent of this project was to investigate how and why these cracks appeared throughout this painting in this specific pattern. It was suggested by Professor James Hamm that this crack pattern was the result of a singular event when the painting entered a low temperature …

Conservation Of A Mid-19th Century Children’S Sofa, Daniel J. Kaping Aug 2018

Conservation Of A Mid-19th Century Children’S Sofa, Daniel J. Kaping

Art Conservation Master's Projects

The conservation treatment of a small mid-19th century sofa with horsehair upholstery has been performed in this project, with the primary goals of: stabilization, reduction of visual disruption from damage, and detention of original material. This has involved utilizing fill materials and repairs where possible in contrast to traditional reupholstering techniques. Secondary to these goals, analysis and imaging have been performed in order to more closely understand the materials involved in the construction of the sofa, its intended purpose (likely as a child’s plaything), and in hopes of uncovering some of its history and origin. Analytical techniques such …

Leichner expandable makeup box, was packed tightly with 105 individual items including: greasepaints; paper, metal, and glass containers of powder- and cream-based cosmetics; wool crepe hairs; makeup-stained cotton balls; several plastic objects; and paper documents. The kit was gifted in 1983, where it had remained since in storage. Approaching treatment began with research into the history of theatrical cosmetics to lend context to the historical …

Editorial: Interiority As Relations, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo Jul 2018

Editorial: Interiority As Relations, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo

Interiority

Understanding the relations between human being and its environment is critical in our attempt to create an appropriate built environment. Interior as a discipline has a privilege to be in the intersection between subjective experience of human users and the physical manifestation of environment occupied by the human. Looking at interiority as a relational construct that occurs between the users and environment should be an essential basis for design practice. This issue of Interiority intends to explore various forms of relational construct that emerge in the interaction between space and the users and to identify possible challenges posed by such …

Passage Territories: Reframing Living Spaces In Contested Contexts, Kristanti Dewi Paramita, Tatjana Schneider Jul 2018

Passage Territories: Reframing Living Spaces In Contested Contexts, Kristanti Dewi Paramita, Tatjana Schneider

Interiority

This paper investigates the concept of ‘passage territories’ (Sennett, 2006), as living spaces constructed from one’s passage of movement from one separate space to another, and how it extends the discussion of interiority in contested contexts. Through observations of living spaces and the narrative accounts of dwellers’ in Kampung Pulo and Manggarai neighbourhoods of Jakarta, this study draws attention to the interiority of dispersed and layered spaces occupied by the kampungs’ dwellers. In this context, passage territories are driven by a) a limitation of space that, in turn, triggers the need to acquire more space; b) the occupation of a …

Some Distinctive Features Of Narrative Environments, Tricia Austin Jul 2018

Some Distinctive Features Of Narrative Environments, Tricia Austin

Interiority

This paper explores key characteristics of spatial narratives, which are called narrative environments here. Narrative environments can take the form of exhibitions, brand experiences and certain city quarters where stories are deliberately being told in, and through, the space. It is argued that narrative environments can be conceived as being located on a spectrum of narrative practice between media-based narratives and personal life narratives. While watching a screen or reading a book, you are, although often deeply emotionally immersed in a story, always physically ‘outside’ the story. By contrast, you can walk right into a narrative environment, becoming emotionally, intellectually …

Perceptions Of Spatiality: Supramodal Meanings And Metaphors In Therapeutic Environments, Stephanie Liddicoat Jul 2018

Perceptions Of Spatiality: Supramodal Meanings And Metaphors In Therapeutic Environments, Stephanie Liddicoat

Interiority

This paper explores the perceptions of the spatiality of individuals who self-harm, with the aim of understanding the design aspects which foster supportive therapeutic environments. Analysis of responses found that there were key similarities in areas of perception of architectural interior space, refuting the commonly held view that all architectural response is purely subjective, and that subjective experience cannot be shared. Three examples of perceptions of interior therapeutic environments are discussed to highlight how the perceptions of spatiality of individuals who self-harm consists of a particular cluster of spatial understandings, behaviours and focuses, manifesting as a strong emotional overtone overlaid …

Insidevisible Cities: Transcending Substance, Zarya Vrabcheva Jul 2018

Insidevisible Cities: Transcending Substance, Zarya Vrabcheva

Interiority

The interior, as one of the most human and sensual forms of architecture, is an intimate connection with the built environment and a powerful tool in provoking and altering the human mind, stimulating its curiosity, desires and solutions by way of visible and ambient matter. I aspire to explore the sense of interiority as betweenness, a space of transition in which both the human and the architecture body transcend from one state to another through empathetic interaction. Empathy, besides the ability to feel and experience someone else’s emotions and mental state, also depicts our capacity to feel and experience situations, …

Indeterminate Duration, James Carey Jul 2018

Indeterminate Duration, James Carey

Interiority

Interiority, in relation to my practice, is the inherent curiosity to the notions of process, time and duration. It is a practice of mark making, marking time, making time, and time making; foregrounding duration and marking an occurrence. My technique is one of working responsively to interiors, allowing particular temporal conditions to surface within specific sites and situations. The marks – whether they be on a canvas, a house, a building, or within a gallery – materialise immateriality and allow the residue of particular processes to be assembled as collections of materialised and spatialised time. This paper discusses an artist …

Sensorial Interior: Museum Diorama As Phenomenal Space, Sarah Edwards Jul 2018

Sensorial Interior: Museum Diorama As Phenomenal Space, Sarah Edwards

Interiority

Museum dioramas are widely recognised as historic visual tropes used to frame the grandeur of the outside world within an interior viewing space. With the development of digital technologies, data projection and soundscape have increasingly replaced diorama production as a means to transform these once static-animal-posed-in-painted- habitat with immersive interiors that engage the visual and aural senses alike. Andre Breton proposes that two modes of consciousness exist: an exterior world of facts and an interior world of emotions. These interiors and exteriors produce an interface and exchange. An invitation to respond to the interior of RMIT University’s First Site gallery …
