New and old cultural institutions are building online worlds for the sharing of ideas and culture; 3D scanning is allowing established institutions to renew their online presence and new forms of digital-only museum are springing up. Most excitingly of all, 3D scanning and VR allow for ancient and modern artefacts to be experienced from the comfort of our own homes

SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
2019 marks the centenary of the 20th century's most influential design school, the Bauhaus. Hong Kong's only surviving Bauhaus building, the Central Market, faces an uncertain future, but elsewhere around the world the beauty and genius of this Modernist movement is receiving renewed interest and surviving Bauhaus structures are being given the protection they deserve.

Mixed Logical And Probabilistic Reasoning In The Game Of Clue, Todd W. Neller, Ziqian Luo
Mixed Logical And Probabilistic Reasoning In The Game Of Clue, Todd W. Neller, Ziqian Luo
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Neller and Ziqian Luo ’18 presented a means of mixed logical and probabilistic reasoning with knowledge in the popular deductive mystery game Clue. Using at-least constraints, we more efficiently represented and reasoned about cardinality constraints on Clue card deal knowledge, and then employed a WalkSAT-based solution sampling algorithm with a tabu search metaheuristic in order to estimate the probabilities of unknown card places.

Migiwa Orimo Interview, Jessica Ruiz
Migiwa Orimo Interview, Jessica Ruiz
Asian American Art Oral History Project
Artist Bio:
Migiwa Orimo is an artist whose primary work takes the form of installation. Orimo was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. After receiving her degree in literature and studying graphic design, she immigrated to the US in the early eighties.
In her process of creating installations, she begins by entering a space of language. Often her installations consist of disparate elements--text, painting, drawing, objects, video and sound. In attempting to establish relationships and tension between those elements, similar to constructing sentences, she explores the notions of gap, slippage, and “a realm of disjunction.”
She exhibits her work nationally; …

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Tom Yendell, an artist based in Hampshire, England, provided the cover art for the Summer 2018 issue of The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). “Silk Flowers” is a mouth painting made from acrylic on silk. Born a bilateral congenital amputee, Tom has learned to use his toes the same ways others use their hands. Tom relies little on aids and adaptations in his everyday life. He believes learning to do things your own way is empowering. As a world-renowned mouth and foot painter, Tom is a living example of how barriers can be overcome by doing things differently. Through …

To Un-Become: Between Historic Reminder And Hallucination, Geographical Document And Childhood Memory, Collective Tragedy And Personal Healing, Saša Rajšić
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
To Un-Become: Between Historic Reminder and Hallucination, Geographical Document and Childhood Memory, Collective Tragedy and Personal Healing is an multimedia art project, which explores the concept of un-becoming through revisiting Operation Storm in Yugoslavia and its consequences over two decades later. My interest in the concept of un-becoming was sparked by a court case in which General Ante Gotovina, a former Croatian military officer, was found guilty of organizing and implementing a permanent and forcible removal of the Serbian people in a 1995 military action entitled Operation Storm. Not long after, Gotovina’s convictions for crimes against humanity were reversed by …

A Brief Look At Meaning In Graphic Design, Elise Rustine
A Brief Look At Meaning In Graphic Design, Elise Rustine
Honors College Theses
In this exploration of meaning in design, some of the theories, such as those proposed by Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce, and the different forms meaning takes are discussed. The project takes the form of analyzing three smaller projects in which meaning was explored in a different way, including a review of semiotics in design, an examination of the differences between denotation and connotation, and the creation of a personal visual identity and the challenge of taking internalized personal meaning and communicating that visually.
Enacting The Glastonbury Pilgrimage Through Communitas And Aural/Visual Culture, Kathryn R. Barush
Enacting The Glastonbury Pilgrimage Through Communitas And Aural/Visual Culture, Kathryn R. Barush
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The sacred sites of Glastonbury in Somerset, England have long been places of pilgrimage, connected to the legend of the journey of Joseph of Arimathea to the British Isles, and have fired the imagination from the Middle Ages to today - inspiring the Arthurian legends, folk-stories and song, and visual representations. In response to the question ‘What is Pilgrimage,’ this essay seeks to explore the conjunction of artistic representations and geographic journeys to and among the ancient topography and mysterious structures of Glastonbury, with a particular focus on how sacred travel, and especially an experience of communitas, can be engendered …

Designing With Meaningful Data: Deep Personalisation In The Air Travel Context, Mengqi Yuan, Rebecca Price, Jeroen Erp, Jorge Andres Osorio Socha

Data and artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionising the way customers interface with organisations and vice versa. However, there is limited knowledge regarding how data and AI are used as material during the design process. It is to this practice- research gap that this paper responds, by providing practical insight into a project between a Dutch airline, named AirlineX for the purpose of this paper, and a university-based design team. The project let to the development of a principle for personality-driven design that deeply personalises digital touchpoints within AirlineX’s operations. This principle is informed by ‘big five’ personality theory from the …

This ORCA grant funded phase one of a long term project documenting the lives and stories of my two sets of grandparents who live in different geographic areas of Canada. Through the guidance of my mentor, and through the opportunities he provided to meet with other artists, I was able to shoot, edit and print a set of highly curated photographs for display in a public gallery. Something I treasure about being a photographer is the opportunities it creates for me to understand the world around me. This project gave me an opportunity I may never have taken before: I …
