Postmodern And Early Modern Theology: Derrida Meets Calderón The Derridean Parergon And Painting Theory In Calderón’S El Pintor De Su Deshonra, Camilo Mejia, Matthew Ancell, Phd.
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Simone Heller-Andrist’s The Friction of the Frame ingeniously employs the Derridean parergon as a methodological approach to analyze the mechanisms involved in the reading process. In The Truth in Painting, Derrida uses the term parergon in the context of a frame in a painting. The parergon is the frame of a painting and a part of the work that is commonly disregarded but influences and manipulates the interpretation of the work. Hence the parergon presents an interaction between the canvas of a painting, and its surroundings. It is neither purely inside nor outside, but it performs and operation that acknowledges …

Cold Wax Demystified Workshop With Miles Conrad, Cat Crotchett
Academic Leadership Academy
I applied for and received an Instructional Development Travel Grant to assist me in attending both the 12TH International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, MA and a 2-day post conference workshop “Cold Wax Demystified with Miles Conrad” at Truro Center for the Arts in Truro, MA.
Both of these events provided me with a unique opportunity to participate in advanced intensive instructional encaustic and cold wax topics that will enhance my teaching within the Painting Area of the Frostic School of Art.
My purpose in taking the workshop on cold wax was to enable me to teach students how to use …
Michelangelo’S Rondanini Pietà: Construction, Creation, And Sculptural Meditation, Heidi Pyper, Elliott D. Wise
Michelangelo’S Rondanini Pietà: Construction, Creation, And Sculptural Meditation, Heidi Pyper, Elliott D. Wise
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I organized this research project to better understand Michelangelo’s final work and sculpture, the Rondanini Pietà, which contains an upright Jesus supported from behind by Mary (Fig. 1). Michelangelo labored on the sculpture up until the last days of his life, and it has even been suggested by John Paoletti that it was meant for the altar of his burial chapel.1The Pietà subject depicts the apocryphal moment following the Crucifixion, when Christ was removed from the cross and placed in Mary’s embrace. Devotionally, the Pietà aids spiritual contemplation and prayer.

Exploration Of The Feminist And Judaic Components In The Art Of Bracha L. Ettinger, Hannah Sandorf, Heather Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Bracha L. Ettinger is considered by many contemporary art scholars as one of the most important living artists of our day that addresses cultural trauma transferal. The child of Jewish immigrants who escaped the Lodz Ghetto, Ettinger grew in Israel, becoming interested in the wealth of different cultural and religious perspectives that thrive in the city. She eventually left Israel to pursue a PhD in psychology in France and now teaches psychoanalysis at the European Graduate School, focusing on her own theories of the Matrixial Borderspace. Because of her many influences, her art is extraordinarily complex and rich with symbolic …
The Women Of Guernica: A Compilation Of Interpretations, Heidi Herrera, Dr. Heather Belnap-Jensen
The Women Of Guernica: A Compilation Of Interpretations, Heidi Herrera, Dr. Heather Belnap-Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Although there is a wealth of scholarship on Picasso’s Guernica (1937) (Fig. 1), until recently there has been a distinct lack of analyses completed through feminist methods, an approach essential to a holistic understanding of Guernica. Conducting on-site research at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, I focused on the women of the painting, studying preparatory drawings and works in which Picasso’s representation of women often borders on violent, painting them as monstrous and agonized. The correlation between Picasso’s previous representations of women and Guernica’s harrowing display of women and animals in pain participates within the Spanish artistic tradition in …
Painted Ladies Of Rome: The Role Of Beauty In Defining Female Excellence, Casandra Ball, Michael Pope
Painted Ladies Of Rome: The Role Of Beauty In Defining Female Excellence, Casandra Ball, Michael Pope
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Ancient Rome was a culture obsessed with excellence, and much scholarly ink has been spent identifying and elucidating the intricate matrix of ideal Roman masculinity. Meanwhile, relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to the concept of feminine excellence, or the means by which Roman women attained social or personal value. The purpose of this project was to examine the position of Roman women within greater Roman society, and to identify the standards used to typify ideal Roman womanhood. I posited that adherence to rigid beauty standards was a significant means by which Roman women could contribute symbolic and tangible …

Stranded Cellular Automaton And Weaving Products, Hao Yang
Stranded Cellular Automaton And Weaving Products, Hao Yang
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
In order to analyze weaving products mathematically and find out valid weaving products, it is natural to relate them to Cellular Automaton. They are both generated based on specific rules and some initial conditions. Holden and Holden have created a Stranded Cellular Automaton that can represent common weaving and braiding products. Based on their previous findings, we were able to construct a Java program and analyze various aspects of the automaton they created. This paper will discuss the complexity of the Stranded Cellular Automaton, how to determine whether a weaving product holds together or not based on the automaton and …
Vision And Christomimesis In The Ruler Portrait Of The Codex Aureus Of St. Emmeram, Riccardo Pizzinato
Vision And Christomimesis In The Ruler Portrait Of The Codex Aureus Of St. Emmeram, Riccardo Pizzinato
School of Art & Design Faculty Publications
The Gospel book known to scholars as the Codex Aureus of St. Emmeram (Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 14000) is a lavishly decorated manuscript produced in 870 for the Carolingian king and subsequent emperor Charles the Bald (823-877). Although the manuscript has been much admired and its art frequently reproduced, many questions remain concerning the Codex Aureus and its miniatures, both individually and as parts of a program. This article examines the relationship between text and image in the two full-page miniatures, which represent the enthroned Charles the Bald facing an image of the twenty-four elders adoring the Lamb. It reads …

Modern Arts And Pueblo Traditions In Santa Fe, 1909–1931, Elizabeth S. Hawley
Modern Arts And Pueblo Traditions In Santa Fe, 1909–1931, Elizabeth S. Hawley
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines art produced in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico during the early twentieth century, putting the works of Pueblo artists who lived in the area into dialogue with the works of Anglo-American modernists who traveled there. I take as case studies three artists whose practices are linked by both circumstance and agenda: Maria Martinez, a famed Pueblo potter; John Sloan, a leading member of The Eight and the Ashcan School; and Tonita Peña, a Pueblo watercolor painter. Weaving together Anglo-American and American Indian art history – which are too often bifurcated into separate accounts, omitting rich histories …
Illusions Of "Blackness" In Contemporary Visual Culture, Michaël Dorn
Illusions Of "Blackness" In Contemporary Visual Culture, Michaël Dorn
MFA in Visual Arts Theses
My thesis begins with a primer of the historical concept of “black(ness)” and the roots of its racialization. Intertwined throughout my discussion in Section I, I will highlight a few of my research findings and discuss some of the installation images that I created as I studied the work of contemporary artists who use lexical and literal figurative “blackness” in their work—in particular, the oeuvre of Kerry James Marshall as featured in his retrospective exhibition Mastry. My discourse unfolds with a brief etymological review of both the English word “black” and its precedent conceptual forms in Section II. Section …

Rural Sense: Value, Heritage, And Sensory Landscapes: Developing A Design-Oriented Approach To Mapping For Healthier Landscapes, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Lily Díaz-Kommonen
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Landscape design needs a novel value system centred on human experience of the landscape rather than simply on economic value. Design-oriented research allows us to shift the focus from mechanistic paradigms towards new sensemaking approaches that value both the sensual and the cognitive in human experience. To move in this direction, we investigate cultural and natural aspects of sensory experience in rural landscapes, arguing that: (1) rural (non-urban) regions offer diverse sensory experiences for optimising human health; and (2) spatial interconnectedness between rural and urban areas means that healthy rural regions are critical for urban development. Our key argument is …

Finding Balance In Generative Product Design, Alex Lobos
Finding Balance In Generative Product Design, Alex Lobos
Presentations and other scholarship
Generative design develops complex forms and structures similar to those found in nature, taking advantage of automated tasks and high-scale computing power. This approach benefits designers in the creation systems that are efficient, resilient and visually engaging. These systems follow specific rules for form generation and meet clear design goals in terms of shape, strength, mass, and other physical attributes.
There is a large number of methods for creating generative systems, based on establishing desired outcomes and behaviors for how components relate to each other. Examples of methods include L-Systems, Shape Grammars, Swarm Intelligence, Form Optimization, Lattice Design, and many …
