Archaeological testing of two sites in western Comanche County, 41CJ75 and 41CJ76, by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during April 1987 has shown that both sites are shallow, low density, prehistoric campsites. Portions of both sites outside the right-of-way of SH 36 have been impacted by cultivation and site integrity has been lost. Those portions within the right-of-way are located within steep backslopes which made testing difficult. Site 41CJ75 was found to be only 10 cm deep except where the SDHPT had placed recent fill on the site. Site 41CJ76 was located along a very steep …

Site 41MS32 was reported in October 1987 during the preliminary engineering stage of a bridge replacement project at Honey Creek on FM 1871 in Mason County. The project calls for a new bridge on new location downstream from the old bridge. The right-of-way for the new bridge and approaches will vary from 85 ft. to 100 ft. in width.

Site 41MS32 occurs partly in the new right-of-way for realigned FM 1871, 7.3 miles southwest of the FM1871 and US87 intersection in the city of Mason. The site is located on the north bank of Honey Creek, a major tributary of …

In the late 1960s, the Texas Highway Department, now known as the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, (SDHPT) initiated a plan to reconstruct a portion of US 259 in Morris County, Between FM 144, north of Omaha, Texas, and the Bowie County Line. Reconstruction of this highway section would complete modernization of US 259 and provide a major connection with Interstate 30. The existing highway was to be reconstructed to modern design standards with improvements to vertical alignment and pavement structure. Archaeological site 41BP280 is located along SH 71 in east~central Bastrop County. Abundant evidence of prehistoric aboriginal occupation covers a narrow Pleistocene terrace which abuts the much higher Pleistocene terrace remnant upon which 41BP19 is located. Multiple cultural components are present at 41BP280, ranging in age from at least the Middle Archaic through the Late Prehistoric Periods. A large lithic artifact assemblage and abundant thermally altered stone were present in up to 1.20 meters of deposit. Site 41BP280 is a potentially important site; however, it is not recommended for additional excavation because that part of the site within the right-ofway …

On March 3-4, 1986, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), conducted a survey of approximately 25 acres, comprising the Converse City Park on the south edge of Converse in Bexar County, Texas. The survey was required to comply with federal regulations. One area within the development zone was found to have a light surface scatter of cultural materials. This lithic scatter was recorded and assigned a permanent state site designation (41BX698). An intensive search of the site area failed to produce any concentration of cultural materials other than the one area. No …

During December 1985, a cultural resources assessment was made within the 350-acre property of Eisenhower Park in northern Bexar County, Texas. Systematic survey of the property and limited subsurface testing at four newly recorded and two previously recorded prehistoric sites were done. All sites are characterized by a deflated scatter of lithic debris. None of the sites examined are deemed potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places or to be designated as a State Archeological Landmark.

Archaeological Survey And Backhoe Testing For Flume No. 3 Right-Of-Way At Coleto Creek Reservoir, Goliad County, Texas, Kenneth M. Brown

During August 1983, archaeological survey and testing were conducted at Flume No.3 for the Coleto Creek power plant reservoir in Goliad County, Texas. The work included survey of the entire Flume No.3 route, testing one site (41 GD 30B) located at the flume outlet on Coleto Creek, survey and testing of an alternate fl ume route downstream, and testi ng at another site designated 41 GD 31. The right-of-way survey revealed a historic site (41 GD 48) in the proposed spoil area; no further work is recommended at this site. Upon notification that the upper San Pedro Acequia was known to be below the anticipated parking lot to be constructed for the VIA Metropolitan Transit System, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) contacted the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, to investigate and document the site. A representative from the THC examined the site and requested minimal excavation and documentation of the San Pedro Acequia in this location. We recommend that this portion of the San Pedro Acequia is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

From January 3-7, 1984, a field crew from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, consisting of Kenneth Brown, Ralph Snavely, and Margaret Greco spent approximately 12 person-days testing archaeological deposits at Sunrise Canyon subdivision (Unit 2) in Universal City, Bexar County, for Sitterle & Companies, the developer.

No further field work is recommended at site 41 BX 441. While further excavation, at least in the vicinity of Test Pit 1, might augment the collection of artifacts from the site, the geologic setting indicates that the context of deposition would be much the same as …

During September 11-13, 1985, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological survey of a proposed water main pipeline for the Department of the Army, Albuquerque District, Corps of Engineers. The pedestrian survey identified one archaeological site (41 VV 810) that produced no temporally diagnostic artifacts. Construction of the water main will not adversely affect the site.
