Denton Municipal Electric (DME) contracted Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company, Inc. (Burns & McDonnell) to perform a background review and cultural resources survey for the Green Valley Energy Center (Project), a proposed 132-megawatt (MW) reciprocating engine power plant located in the northern city limits of Denton near the community of Green Valley in Denton County, Texas. The following report provides information regarding the Project and includes the methods and results of the cultural resources background review and survey of a 92-acre Survey Area (Survey Area). The cultural resources survey was performed under Antiquities Permit #7443.

Plans are in place for development of an approximately 29.52-acre tract of land in northwestern McKinney, Collin County, Texas. The tract is located southwest of the US 380/Lake Forest Drive intersection, and sits on the northern extent of the Wilson Creek floodplain and the adjacent upland. An intermittent stream flows through the site, and contains Waters of the U.S., which fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. KBA EnviroScience, Ltd., which is handling the project’s environmental permitting, contracted AR Consultants, Inc. to survey this jurisdictional area. As a result of a City of Helotes undertaking funded by TxDOT, an intensive pedestrian survey was carried across approximately seven total acres of trail and park space, as well as a pedestrian bridge, improvements to the parking and sidewalk space (i.e., benches and trashcans) along Riggs Road, and pedestrian crossing at Scenic Loop Road and Highway 16. Work was carried out in coordination with TxDOT and the THC under Antiquities Permit Number 7512, issued to David Yelacic, RPA, and fieldwork was conducted in late December 2015 by Yelacic with assistance from Tanner Jason, field scientist. Cultural resource investigations were conducted by SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) for TCB INC. on behalf of a private developer and in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for a culvert replacement project located in eastern Bexar County, Texas. This project area consists of the bridge culvert situated on Farm-to-Market (FM) 1518 at Woman Hollering Creek near Schertz, Texas. The private developer proposes to replace the existing bridge culvert with a concrete slab bridge that would encompass a distance of 200 feet (60 m) along each approach. In June and July 2016, American Archaeology Group LLC conducted an archaeological survey of 23.21 acres of the existing American Legion Park in Rosebud, Texas. The investigation consisted of a pedestrian survey supported with mechanical trenching and shovel tests. The entire project right-of-way has been severely impacted by road construction, utilities installation, and previously used as a trash dump. The City of Rosebud plans to construct a hike and bike trail and place surface recreational facilities with minimal impacts.

One historic archaeological site was identified and recorded as 41FA90. The site was recorded as 136.2 meters long and 58.8 meters …

In May 2008, PBSJ (now Atkins North America, Inc.), was contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), to conduct archaeological impact evaluations and surveys for the Houston and Beaumont Districts under Contract 578-XX-SA004. This contract was for on-demand services, with specific work defined by individual work authorizations. However, all investigations were subsumed under a single Texas Antiquities Permit (No. 4925) for the contract, with Michael Nash serving as Principal Investigator during fieldwork. Four work authorizations were issued, but only three surveys were conducted due to a refusal of Right-of-Entry on one job. All fieldwork was conducted between October 2008 …

In July of 2016, Hicks & Company completed an archeological areal survey for the city of Coleman’s Proposed New Waterline Project located in Coleman County, Texas. The survey was completed for the city of Coleman under Texas Antiquities Permit #7704 with investigators surveying a total of 31 acres. The project will be funded through a Community Block Grant Program, as managed by the Texas Department of Agriculture, a political entity of the state of Texas, and is therefore subject to the Antiquities Code of Texas (ACT). On February 17, 2015, Hicks & Company conducted an intensive archeological survey of the proposed Johnson City’s (the City’s) New Skateboard Park location in Blanco County, Texas. The project will consist of a new concrete skate park that will be constructed on an approximately 0.66-acre area of potential effects (Figure 1). In addition to any necessary landclearing and leveling, proposed impacts will include the laying of about 93 square meters (1,000 square feet) of concrete, four pairs of 1-meter by 1.5-meter (3-foot by 5-foot) washer pits, and a native plant garden with a 30 centimeter (12-inch ) depth of impact. …

In December 2015, a pedestrian archeological survey was completed in order to inventory and evaluate any archeological resources on public and private land for 1.2 miles of proposed new-location roadway between Chandler Road and Northpark Boulevard in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas. The project is associated with the development of the East Williamson County Events Center (EWCEC), currently under construction near the south end of the project. The road will be owned and funded by Williamson County, rendering it subject to the Antiquities Code of Texas. No federal nexus is known.

Between February 2014 and October 2015, Atkins North America, Inc. (Atkins), conducted cultural resources investigations for the City of San Antonio’s (COSA’s) proposed Espada Road Widening Project. The project area extends from Southeast Interstate Loop 410 to approximately 137 meters (450 feet) west of the intersection of East Ashley Road and Espada Road, a distance of approximately 1.6 kilometers (1.0 mile), comprising 7.99 acres (3.2 hectares). The project area was subjected to an intensive pedestrian survey, which was supplemented by mechanical trenching. These data were collected using a NextEngineHD running ScanStudioHD Pro, and were post-processed in Geomagic Design X 2016.0.1. In this thesis I analyze the cultural techniques of Paleoindians in North America by examining the diversification and fusion of stemmed projectile point traditions using an evolutionary analysis. The Western Stemmed Point tradition has an extensive regional and temporal distribution throughout the Intermountain West and High Plains during the Paleoindian period. In an effort to determine how stemmed projectile point technologies relate to each other, I applied a phylogenetic approach to construct heritable patterns of projectile point histories. By measuring the physical traits of those points and using a macro-evolutionary theoretical approach, changes in artifact form can be acquired and …

The significant role of the female printer in the American home-based print shops during the colonial and early republic periods has been documented in print history, socioeconomic, labor, and women studies, yet with the industrialization of the printing trade, women’s presence is thought to have disappeared. Contrary to the belief that industrialization of the print shop eradicated women’s involvement in skilled employments such as typesetting, the creation of the Women’s Cooperative Printing Union in California and the creation and chartering of the Women’s Typographical Union in New York, both in the late 1860s, clearly indicate that women continued to work …

This year the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project (hereafter the “Project”) established new standards in research, teaching, and public outreach in the study of the fur trade and colonialism in southwest Michigan. The Project continues to collaborate in the generation and dissemination of knowledge under the auspices of the Fort St. Joseph Archaeology Advisory Committee (FSJAAC), Western Michigan University (WMU) faculty and students, interested stakeholders, supporters, members, and community volunteers. It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity.
