Interiority And Agency: Exploring Self In Context With Others In The Act Of Creation, Barbara Young Jul 2023

Interiority And Agency: Exploring Self In Context With Others In The Act Of Creation, Barbara Young

Interiority

This investigation seeks to extend the discourse on interiority. I am an interior designer and, therefore, pose questions as they relate to design process, specifically that the concern regarding interiority is not necessarily something to design for, but as designers, it affects how and what we design. The presented cases are artistic explorations that provided an opportunity to interrogate interiority as it relates to my cognitive and creative process. Through an auto-ethnographic account, I present two acts of making. In the creation process, I interrogate meaning-making and perception that constitutes my subjective interiority, which can only be understood in context. …

Korean Public Bathhouse: Potential Of Interiority, Michelle Boyoung Huh Jul 2023

Korean Public Bathhouse: Potential Of Interiority, Michelle Boyoung Huh

Interiority

This essay introduces the Korean public bathhouse, jjimjil-bang, to understand the concept of interiority from sociocultural and psychological perspectives. The author addresses interiority as a continuous process of defining the range of intimacy that changes with context, space, and time. Interiority involves individuating spatial and situational moments in the blended physical, perceived, and imaged environment. In exploring interiority, the case of jjimjil-bang suggests broad perspectives for understanding spatial circumstances as an integration of the activity, environment, and situation. The author introduces the characteristics of jjimjil-bang in terms of the program, spatial structure, and meaning of memory. To demonstrate the …

Illusory Interior: Public Housing As Uncanny Site, Dea Aulia Widyaevan Jul 2023

Illusory Interior: Public Housing As Uncanny Site, Dea Aulia Widyaevan

Interiority

In 2021, Indonesia participated in the London Design Biennale, focusing on the theme of Resonance. The pavilion's response centred around public housing as an uncanny site, examining the psychological barriers faced by evicted communities during their transition to public housing. This study provides a conceptual analysis by exploring how the uncanny aspects of the occupants' experiences are expressed in installation using the illusory interior as a spatial metaphor. Through practice-led research, utilising ethnographic surrealism and narrative inquiries, data was gathered and translated into artistic mediums through various experiments. The study identifies several factors contributing to the uncanny sensation among public …

Live-Work Interior Quality For Older People In Low-Income Housing In Bangkok, Sutida Sattayakorn, Soranart Sinuraibhan, Saithiwa Ramasoot, Supreeya Wungpatcharapon, Karim Hadjri, Isaiah Durosaiye, Junji Huang

Interiority

This study explores to determine the live-work housing needs of low-income older people in informal settlements, the ways of life of whom contemporary housing provision often fails to consider. A questionnaire survey was conducted in three communities in Klong Toey, the largest informal settlement in Bangkok, to understand households’ satisfaction levels and expectations regarding the interior quality of their live-work housing. Older people’s specific interior spaces and housing requirements and expectations vary depending on the nature of their livelihood activities that can be categorised into three main groups, namely service, cook, and stock. The findings suggest a strong relationship between …

The Emergence Of Interior Architecture, Maryam Darbandi, Nadieh Imani, Mohammadreza Rahimzadeh Jul 2023

The Emergence Of Interior Architecture, Maryam Darbandi, Nadieh Imani, Mohammadreza Rahimzadeh

Interiority

Less than a century has passed since the creation or at least the use of the term interior architecture. Although interior architecture had existed before and was considered an inseparable part of architectural work, some developments and changes became the basis for the formation of interior architecture and, as a result, its appearance independently of architecture. The main impact of these developments in the independence of interior architecture can be traced to the 19th and 20th centuries when the field of two specialisations of the same family, interior decoration and interior design emerged. This article aims to take a …

Manifestations Of Urban Interiority In Delhi Gate Bazaar Of Lahore, Sarah Javed Shah, Carles Muro Jul 2023

Manifestations Of Urban Interiority In Delhi Gate Bazaar Of Lahore, Sarah Javed Shah, Carles Muro

Interiority

In the contemporary debate, the notion of interiority has expanded beyond the confines of the interior, in the urban realm, as a conjunction of urban and interior conditions. This article aims to contribute to the discourse, using the lens of urban interiority to explore the unique spatial character and distinct cultural practices in Lahore’s Delhi Gate Bazaar. The bazaar exists on a linear passageway, the Royal Trail, as a network of interior, exterior, and in-between spaces—establishing a spatial continuum by blurring the boundaries between the public and private and uninterrupted flow of spaces from outside to inside. This urban space …

The Vices Of Virtues: Making Room For Moral Testimony In The Life Of The Virtuous Person, Maria Waggoner Jul 2023

The Vices Of Virtues: Making Room For Moral Testimony In The Life Of The Virtuous Person, Maria Waggoner

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation sheds light on new and unacknowledged difficulties that we face in striving to be (more) virtuous. By making use of empirical literature from moral, affective, and perceptual learning, I explore the potential cognitive and psychological relationships between having a virtue in one context and the tendency to exhibit vices in another. I do this by showing how morally good behavioral habits can also lead to morally inappropriate actions, when a virtuous moral perceptual system can give rise to moral illusions, and when our basic evaluative affective responses differ in their degree of sensitivity, leading to having some virtues …

Communion Anthropoid, Joshua Stanek Jul 2023

Communion Anthropoid, Joshua Stanek

Dissertations and Theses

In National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation, a man of good will offers all he has to a dear brother-in-law--recognizing the snakes he keeps as toys, the camper, the stones, dirt, and arid shrubbery are likewise dear to him. They go out to the desert at night and dig shallow holes, seemingly at random. Their imprecision is surprisingly fruitful. Imagine the constellation they made for the stars. In Communion Anthropoid, I am digging shallow holes in the dark with a mind to unearth what I believe I have lost. The dearness, I suppose. These poems vary in form from eight …

Decolonizing Kyiv’S Politics Of Memory: Current And Potential Implications Of Russia’S 2022 Invasion Of Ukraine On Ukrainian Monuments And Toponyms., Camilla Gironi Jul 2023

Decolonizing Kyiv’S Politics Of Memory: Current And Potential Implications Of Russia’S 2022 Invasion Of Ukraine On Ukrainian Monuments And Toponyms., Camilla Gironi

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

History is the basis of our identity, but it sometimes represents a trap. As well explained by Keith Lowe, monuments are representative of our values, and every society deludes itself that its values will be everlasting. However, in a world changing at an unprecedented pace while we move on, urban furnishment such as monuments or streets’ names remain frozen in time. Statues and toponyms that were erected and chosen a long time ago may no longer be representative of the values we now treasure. While Russia’s aggression is still raging, a lot has been written on the potential implications of …

The Survival Of Manuscripts: Resistance, Adoption, And Adaptation To Gutenberg's Printing Press In Early Modern Europe, Kaitlin Jean Kojali Jul 2023

The Survival Of Manuscripts: Resistance, Adoption, And Adaptation To Gutenberg's Printing Press In Early Modern Europe, Kaitlin Jean Kojali

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper seeks to provide a brief survey of three types of responses to Gutenberg’s moveable type printing press and its effect on early modern Europe: resistance, adoption, and adaptation. Analyzing the respective examples of these three responses to print will help to explain why manuscript production survived in a world that was seemingly dominated by print. Although several different arguments for the survival of the manuscript may be derived from the exhaustive examples of print reactions, the theme of the newfound overabundance of information is the most prominent. This paper opens with an introduction, which is followed by a …

Reckoning Roanoke: A Historiographical Examination Of The Lost Colony, Anna K. Poole Jul 2023

Reckoning Roanoke: A Historiographical Examination Of The Lost Colony, Anna K. Poole

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The disappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke is an American mystery which has baffled historians for centuries. This paper takes a historiographical view of the works of academics Lee Miller and James Horn, comparing their research and conclusions on the topic. Miller’s belief that the colony was sabotaged by English secretary of state Sir. Francis Walsingham and Horn’s theory that an English desire for mineral wealth and poor preparation for survival in the New World brought about their demise are each analyzed for their legitimacy, research gaps, and possible biases. Through this analysis, it is concluded that the field …

Perceived Phantoms: A Phenomenological Observation Of Spirituality In Atsumori, Nicholas C. Gilomen Jul 2023

Perceived Phantoms: A Phenomenological Observation Of Spirituality In Atsumori, Nicholas C. Gilomen

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The paper examines the performance and embodiment of spirituality in Japanese Noh Drama during the Muromachi era from 1336 CE to 1573 CE. It also observes the art form from a modern perspective. Specifically, this research examines the classic Noh Drama play Atsumori by Zeami Motokiyo through the phenomenological lens. Phenomenology is a qualitative study that focuses on the perceptions of the human consciousness, and it allows me to examine the impact of subjective experiences on a person’s sense of truth. This paper examines the spirituality present through the various religious influences that went into the development of Noh Drama …

J.R.R. Tolkien, Culture Warrior: The Alt-Right's Crusade Against The Tolkien Society's 2021 Summer Seminar On "Tolkien And Diversity", Robin A. Reid Dr. Jul 2023

J.R.R. Tolkien, Culture Warrior: The Alt-Right's Crusade Against The Tolkien Society's 2021 Summer Seminar On "Tolkien And Diversity", Robin A. Reid Dr.

Journal of Tolkien Research

In Verlyn Flieger's GOH speech at MythCon, "The Arch and the Keystone" (2019), she argues that the contradictions in Tolkien's own writing (fiction, non-fiction, and letters) is a primary cause of the "increasing fragmentation and polarization [among readers and scholars]," concluding that "[e]verybody has their own private Tolkien, more Tolkiens than you can shake a stick at" (9). In this presentation, I trace some attributes of the alt-right's "private Tolkien" which they have made public in forty plus online articles, some receiving a hundred or more public comments, during 2021-22. The articles (in periodicals and personal blogs) attacked, variously:

The …

A Constant In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 2023

A Constant In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The mid-summer glamor events are now history. Wimbledon offered two record-setting championship runs. The All-Star Game was one of the more exciting in recent history, as it opened with two excellent catches by the corner outfielders, both Cubans, who had once roomed together. It ended with a tight finish and the winning home run was hit by a player, not a household name, who blossomed relatively late in his career. The Open also provided some golf excellence as it always does, even though it was without a dramatic finish.

Architectura Transtopica: Totems Of A Journeyman, Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou Jul 2023

Architectura Transtopica: Totems Of A Journeyman, Ioannis Galanopoulos Papavasileiou

All Works

The project Architectura Transtopica: Totems of a Journeyman argues in favour of using and interpreting fixed architectural structures as metaphors and symbols of expatriation. The primary inquiry of this paper is to consider how autobiographic re-enactments of lived experiences with architecture, triggered by non-country specific places, illustrate one’s life journey. Building on studies that are at the intersection of social and cultural studies, humanistic geography, evolutionary ecology, anthropology, art and architecture (Alahdadi, 2018; Avci et al., 2017; Kunz, 2016; Martin et al., 2015; Cotton, 2015; Mathur, 2011; Cresswell, 2006; Relph, 1977), I argue here that producing creative parallels of expatriation …

“Following The Star”: Eärendil, Númenor, And The Star Of Bethlehem, Kristine Larsen Jul 2023

“Following The Star”: Eärendil, Númenor, And The Star Of Bethlehem, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

The following argument is made:

1. There has been a widespread and persistent interest in an astronomical explanation of the Star of Bethlehem as a single, brilliant physical object (e.g., Venus) among the general public (in both England and America) for more than a century and a half. This fascination is reflected in artwork as well as questions posed to astronomers.

2. The astronomical community has frequently referenced this interest in print articles that are available to the general public.

3. Tolkien paralleled this widespread iconography in his artwork and literary texts.

4. Tolkien’s decades-long revisions for the character of …
