Returning To Northern New Mexico. A Study Of The Nuevomexicano Lexicon., Guevara Del Angel
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Spanish in New Mexico prior to the 1900s was the predominant language of the region that began to be displaced with the growth of the English-speaking population during the 20th century. In this dissertation I refer to the Spanish language variety that has had the longest historical presence in northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado as Traditional New Mexican Spanish (TNMS, as per Bills & Vigil, 2008). This study aims to document aspects of maintenance and change regarding TNMS. The traditional heritage variety of New Mexican Spanish is changing in many ways, evolving from what has been documented in the …
Carbon Nanotubes Animated, Nicholas Onyemeke
Carbon Nanotubes Animated, Nicholas Onyemeke
Chemistry Summer Fellows
In this project, I implemented the knowledge about carbon nanotubes into an animated short. The animated short is meant to simplify the research so that anyone can understand regardless of their background in science. The research I did was on how nanotubes can be used in the medical field as a measure to inhibit bacteria growth. A nanotube dye solution was synthesized to inoculate bacteria along with an antibiotic solution with the nanotubes. This was done to observe how well the nanotubes can inhibit bacteria growth without the need for a drug compared to the effectiveness when it has a …

#Existenceisresistance: Black Spartans Exhibition, Yeab Kebede
McNair Research Journal SJSU
This research paper explores the intersection of art and social justice, with a specific focus on the Black Spartans (1907-1948) Exhibit that showcased 19 Black students who attended San José State University from 1907 to 1948. The paper argues that art, in the form of visual representation, can serve as a powerful tool to address social injustices and provide a platform for underrepresented voices to be heard. By examining the Black Spartans exhibit, the paper highlights the significance of representation and how it can contribute to social justice movements. The paper also analyzes the impact of the exhibit on the …
Language Was My Home: I Had It In My Mind - But Not On My Tongue (Grappling With Aphasia), Corinne Othenin-Girard
Language Was My Home: I Had It In My Mind - But Not On My Tongue (Grappling With Aphasia), Corinne Othenin-Girard
Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism
Language was my home. I had a prolonged aphasic speech and writing block. Felt as if I was in exile. I slowly fought my way back amongst the ‘language owners’. Because of my funny stroke-induced accent, people tend to treat me like a foreigner. I began to write lyrics and prose to improve my language ability and also to show ‘them’, as well as myself, that I can do it. And that I can say again: language is my home.
Using Queer Of Color Theory To Analyze Latinidad, Maria I. Castro-Mendoza
Using Queer Of Color Theory To Analyze Latinidad, Maria I. Castro-Mendoza
Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism
Queer of Color Theory (QOCT) has emerged as a new field of study with the rise of LGBTQ+ visibility in the modern day political landscape. QOCT is an extended analysis of queer theory that explicitly and intentionally takes into account race, imperialism, and colonialism. Queer of color theory can be used to create or expand upon an already existing theory, and has roots in Black feminism. Using queer of color theory as a method of analysis, this essay discusses the black and indigenous erasure within the Latinidad movement and seeks to examine those who have been systemically left out of …

Artist Into An Educator—Educator Inside An Artist, Raheela Qabool Abro Ms
Early College Folio
This study is a self-investigation of the author's identity by exploring her two professions: an artist as well as an art educator. Her insights as an educator provided a background for her as an artist through the production of this series of miniature artworks created with cell phone SIM cards. A SIM card, which stands for “Subscriber Identification Module,” contains information tied to the identity of the individual using it. For this reason, the author chose it as a medium for creating an art series to represent identity. In the dialogue of artist and educator, Abro confronts changes to the …

Rolling A Boulder Up A Mountain: The Path To Higher Education In Displacement Concepts, Rebecca Granato
Rolling A Boulder Up A Mountain: The Path To Higher Education In Displacement Concepts, Rebecca Granato
Early College Folio
Students in contexts affected by displacement and forced migration are at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing and successfully completing higher education, as well as translating their learning into post-graduation opportunities. Universities with clear social missions and networks of institutions have the power and the obligation to support the creation of “opportunities pipelines” for these populations.

Move, May Honey Maung
Move, May Honey Maung
Early College Folio
“Move” is a call to action that urges leaders to work together to create a world where education is accessible and inclusive to everyone regardless of their socioeconomic status or background. Drawing inspiration from the author’s own educational experiences as both a student and employee of Phaung Daw Oo, this poem is a reminder that education is not a privilege but a fundamental human right; we all have a responsibility to ensure that it is available to all learners. The author—whose country is currently facing violence and economic and educational instability due to a February 2021 coup d’état—relays the hopeful …
