Machine learning (ML) is used to enhance an increasing number of intelligent products, yet it is not a well-explored topic in user experience (UX) design education. ML is iteratively trained using collected data and its technical properties (e.g., accuracy rate) constantly change when it is used. The primary purpose of this study was to explore the challenges and difficulties of design-based interdisciplinary projects, the learning problems encountered by university students and the learning resources they used to overcome these problems. A total of 247 students participated in the survey. The study found that the main challenges and difficulties in design-based interdisciplinary learning included communication, the integration of different disciplines, the presence (or lack thereof) of students' collaboration skills, learning and cooperation difficulties with regard to different disciplines, and differences in thinking across disciplines.
