Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
The dynamic nature of the language industry and the current and future demands of the translation market have increased the need for integrating web-based collaborative learning and teamwork techniques into translation training classrooms. However, the absence of specialized eLearning platforms for translation training makes it difficult for translation trainers to execute collaborative translation tasks that mimic real-life situations. The present paper discusses online collaborative learning in translation classrooms and argues for involving translator training stakeholders in the process of designing and developing web-based collaborative learning tools for translator-training purposes. The paper proposes a software design workflow that can be followed by …

Shakespeare's Hamlet And Chekhov's Ivanov And The Type Of The Russian Intellectual Of The Late 19th Century Russia, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
Shakespeare’s Hamlet influenced Chekhov's plays, from Ivanov to The Cherry Orchard. Ivanov was the first genuine literary figure to be created by Chekhov and his version of the character of the Russian Hamlet. This study is not only concerned with the Hamletian elements in Ivanov, but it also tries to stress the fact that Chekhov was casting an eye on Hamlet while creating the character of his protagonist. The personality of the hero of this play still provokes critical arguments. However, the work here looks at Ivanov as a tragic character, the Russian Hamlet of the 1880s, and views the …
Dramatic Semiotics In Azzeddine Mihoubi’S The Rose And The Swordfish, Sadia Benstiti
Dramatic Semiotics In Azzeddine Mihoubi’S The Rose And The Swordfish, Sadia Benstiti
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
The drama program in the theatrical text is based on a set of dramatic transformations according to a specific timeframe and place where the author tries to embody that program through an imaginary space accompanied by a parallel text explaining the situations in which the dramatic actions take place. Also in that program, the author describes the situations of the active selves based on moving the dramatic act and transforming it from one path to another in a process called, in the semiotic term, “dramatic Transformations.” On this basis, the dramatic self is the focus of the theatrical text, and …

During the reign of Sultan Sa'id bin Taymur, Oman was underdeveloped in many aspects. He even refused to effect any change so his country develpoed, and he didn’t meet the demands of his own people along with Omani revolutions against him. The Concept Of Simile In Relevance Theory: An Analysis Of The Degree Of Relevance Of The Simile “Houris” In The Holy Qur'an, Said Abu-Khader
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study deals with simile as a figure of speech in the field of theoretical linguistics and relevance theory. It presents a model in analyzing the degree of relevance in comparing “Houris” in the Quranic discourse, based on the inductive approach in reviewing related literature and the descriptive approach in selecting the material. In other words, this study further illustrates some of its pragmatic functions via Qur'anic discourse by utilizing the selected simile of "Houris"-the nymphs of paradise in the Qur'anic verses: "and wide-eyed houris, as the likeness of nestled pearls"(Al-Waqi'ah: 22-23). The use of relevance theory here reaffirms the …

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This paper draws its importance from two angles. First, it deals with a marginal Arabic text that was born in the seventeenth century. Second, its use of cultural criticism in clarifying the text's components as cultural criticism is a partner of literary criticism. The traveler's text is not written by a traveler, a geographer, a writer or an ambassador, but it is written by an Arab prince, Fakhr al-Din al-Ma'in II (1634), who made his journey to Italy between 1613 and 1618. It was a journey which he had to make to save blood and to escape the surveillance of …

Back To Exile Is History A Novel Or Does Novel Use History?, Nabil Haddad
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
It is needless to say that the 'historicism' of novels is present in their 'protagonists' or in their narratives, which had occurred in some era that had had its own events and heros. Or perhaps to have its own world of narration, which takes its topics from the inventions and available information offered by its era, as well as the artistic rules and objective dissertations of that era. The first issue regarding the novel chosen to be our case study today would be dependent upon how many referrals that society witnessed, according to the novel research, that the recepient could …

Despite many attempts to produce such a standardized test over the past decades, yet they fall short of being satisfactory to be accepted as international tests like other international recognized and widely implemented language proficiency tests due to their many short comings. This study is twofold: first, it is an attempt to shed light on some of the Arabic language …

The Procedures Of The Abbasid Caliph Al-Mu'tadidbillah (279-289 Ah / 892-902 Ad) To Ensure That The Caliphate Was Confined To His Offspring, Modar Adnan Telfah
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study aims at uncovering the procedures followed by the Abbasid Caliph, alMu'tadidBillah, to ensure that the caliphate was confined to his offspring and that other branches of the Abbasid family were deprived of it. The findings reveal that alMu’tadid’s procedures succeeded in granting the caliphate to his son, al-MuktadirBillah, despite his very young age. The procedures also helped in thwarting the rebellion of Prince Abdallahibn al-Mu'tazz who was backed by most of the Abbasid statesmen. Although the procedures kept the caliphate within al-Mu’tadid’s offspring, they returned the dominance of the army leaders over the caliphate and the state.

The Apartheid System In The Israeli And South African Experiences, Nirmeen Gawanmeh
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
The apartheid system prevailed in South Africa in 1948. The natives of the land were segregated into ethnic groups in certain locations known as the Bantustan. According to apartheid laws, each ethic group, whether white or black in skin, is only liable to inhabit a certain region. However, the white have the right of mobilization while the Black are imprisoned in their selected areas. Such discrimination alludes to the one which is established by Israel to discriminate between the Palestinian Muslims and Christians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and other occupied lands. Such racial discrimination is deeply rooted in …

Theorising From The Land: House Or Tipi Of Ir?, Justin De Leon
Ethnic Studies Faculty Articles and Research
In 2004, Anna Agathangelou and L.H.M. Ling wrote their important intervention, entitled ‘The House of IR: From Family Power Politics to the Poises of Worldism,’ that ordered various theories of International Relations within an analogy of a colonial household, calling instead for a Worldism that builds communities based on interests and support. One glaring omission from this analysis, however, is mention of indigeneity. Increasingly, in North America, the experiences of Indigenous peoples are shaping national imaginations and popular political discourses – take for instance Idle No More, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Standing Rock, and Mauna Kea, to …

Digital Sociology And Online Music Communities: Models And Lessons From The Internet, Kari K. Veblen, Janice L. Waldron
Visions of Research in Music Education
With the rise of the internet, work from the of fields of digital sociology, communications/social media studies, and online research methods have become increasingly relevant for music education scholars both investigating and facilitating music teaching and learning in online contexts. While opportunities for online music making, teaching, and learning activities have grown exponentially, the number of online places dedicated to music making, learning, and sharing has exploded with the arrival of COVID as much of the world moves online. What was once an option – going online to teach and learn music – has now become a necessity for most …
Identity, Memory, And Performance In The Time Of Pandemic: A Duoethnography, Terry Sefton, Danielle Sirek
Identity, Memory, And Performance In The Time Of Pandemic: A Duoethnography, Terry Sefton, Danielle Sirek
Visions of Research in Music Education
How can a musician maintain her sense of self in quarantine, a self that is constructed by intertwined strands of creativity, performativity, and relationship? The hiatus brought about during the pandemic has created a lack for musicians and music educators, an absence or loss of professional identity and personal meaning. On March 12, 2020, we found ourselves shut out of the classroom and barred from the performance stage. Over the course of a year, we two musician-educators engaged in duoethnography as a way of documenting our experiences. It became a site where we could provide each other with a “destabalizing …
Music Education And The Shrinking Public Space: Implications Of Richard Sennett's Sociological Ideas For Music Education, Paul Louth
Visions of Research in Music Education
Richard Sennett’s theory that industrial capitalism triggered the gradual elimination of shared cultural symbolism and thus contributed to the impoverishment of civic involvement deserves to be revisited in light of its implications for music education in an age of global information capitalism. In 1974 Sennett produced an extensive examination of the relationship between public culture and public space, arguing that our response to large-scale social and economic forces over which we have limited control is to retreat from public cultural expressions and consequently from public life. Extending Sennett’s sociological argument, I contend that the subjectivizing of musical meaning may lead …

Perspectives On Social Realism Within North American Higher Music Education, Kyle Zavitz
Visions of Research in Music Education
This article critically examines the suitability of Social Realist perspectives within North American higher music education, with a particular focus on its relationship with jazz musical knowledges. Social Realist scholarship continues to emerge within the field of education sociology, driven by claims to contribute to student access and opportunity. In spite of this, scholars have continued to critique Social Realist perspectives for various reasons including maintaining an ideological status quo and devaluing the experiences of students, going as far as argue that Social Realist frameworks may in fact limit the access and opportunity espoused by its proponents. Drawing upon past …
In Search Of A Better World? Reconsidering Sociology And Music Education As Utopian Fields, Alexandra Kertz-Welzel
In Search Of A Better World? Reconsidering Sociology And Music Education As Utopian Fields, Alexandra Kertz-Welzel
Visions of Research in Music Education
Music education research has in recent years been interested in defining music education’s societal mission. Concepts such as praxial music education, artistic citizenship, or an activist approach tried to determine that music education’s foremost task would be to transform societies. This seemed urgent in view of global crises. But is music education’s foremost mission really social change? To a certain degree, this is a sociological question. To answer it, a look back to the beginnings of sociology as a field of research is a promising way to go. When sociology emerged as a specific field of investigation, it was not …

Developing Visions For The Future? A Reflection On Utopias In Music Teacher Education, Tine Grieg Viig, Silje Valde Onsrud, Judy Lewis, Catharina Christophersen, Øystein Røsseland Kvinge
Visions of Research in Music Education
As society changes, new challenges arise for education. Major social upheavals have led to increasing awareness of social justice issues and critical reflection within the field of music education, as well as calls for social and educational change. In this article, five music teacher educators discuss how music teacher educators and pre-service music teachers can develop spaces for envisioning future music teacher education through utopian thinking. We consider utopias as social dreaming reflecting a desire for a better way of life, and utopian pedagogy as experimenting to envision new alternatives, tell new stories and construct new realities. The article starts …
