Motherhood In The Multiverse: Melodrama And Asian American Identity In Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, Aditya Sudhakaran
Motherhood In The Multiverse: Melodrama And Asian American Identity In Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, Aditya Sudhakaran
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In what follows, I look to the visual and narrative composition of the multiverse between Everything, Everywhere, All at Once (The Daniels, 2022) and Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness (Sam Raimi, 2022) to develop a more precise understanding of the superhero blockbuster as a contemporary expression of sensation melodrama. To do so, I use two depictions of maternity to excavate two very different approaches to the multiverse: one that externalizes social conflict, which it answers with individuated and exculpatory violence, and another that internalizes social conflict, which it answers through collective care. I introduce the blockbuster’s mobilization of the multiverse …
La Virtud Está En El Medio: Observaciones Sobre La Pronunciación De La /S/ En El Español Dominicano, Orlando Alba
La Virtud Está En El Medio: Observaciones Sobre La Pronunciación De La /S/ En El Español Dominicano, Orlando Alba
Faculty Publications

Euler And Venus' Suspicious Moon, Michael P. Saclolo
Euleriana
This is a brief note on Leonhard Euler's published German translation from the French of two memoirs read by Armand Henri Baudouin de Guémadeuc to the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1761 and published the same year. The memoirs report on observations made of the planet Venus, performed in Limoges, France by Jacques Montaigne, where he claimed to have detected a moon orbiting the Morning and Evening Star.
Taulkinham’S Guardian: The Character Of Enoch Emery In Flannery O’Connor’S Wise Blood, Michaela Reed
Taulkinham’S Guardian: The Character Of Enoch Emery In Flannery O’Connor’S Wise Blood, Michaela Reed
Graduate Research Showcase
Flannery O’Connor’s first novel Wise Blood follows the story of Hazel Motes as his journey in the hostile city of Taulkinham transforms him from a defiant defector of the divine to a stoic and resigned blind prophet. For many readers, Hazel’s evolution labels him as the sole owner of wise blood in the novel, a conclusion that fails to acknowledge Enoch Emery’s obedience to his own innate wisdom. Enoch’s bumbling behavior and animalistic drive cause many O’Connor writers and scholars, such as Patrick O’Donnell and Jason C. Lee, to interpret him as little more than a comic simpleton. However, careful …

‘A Vitious Way Of Observing’: A New History Of The Personal Equation, Matthew D. Lund
‘A Vitious Way Of Observing’: A New History Of The Personal Equation, Matthew D. Lund
College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research
David Kinnebrook is only known today as the assistant to the Astronomer Royal dismissed for marking stellar transits too slowly. Kinnebrook’s firing is commonly listed as the impetus for the personal equation as well as empirical psychology. Historians drawing their accounts from Nevil Maskelyne’s remarks on the dismissal, view Kinnebrook as a slightly misused, though mute, party in the affair. Kinnebrook’s letters, which resurfaced in 1985, present his side of the story. While scholars have discussed some aspects of the letters, they have not addressed Kinnebrook’s account of a months-long dispute with Maskelyne concerning observational disagreements. Kinnebrook’s letters provide an …
Let’S Stop Calling Them “Slave Narratives”: Anagrammatical Blackness In Our Academic Discourse, Joseph L. Coulombe
Let’S Stop Calling Them “Slave Narratives”: Anagrammatical Blackness In Our Academic Discourse, Joseph L. Coulombe
College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research
The label “slave narrative” is a damaging misnomer that leads to critical distortions and misrepresentations. These important texts were written by free men and women, not slaves, who had emancipated themselves from America’s slave system, and they function as testimonials of self-determination that document their escape from enslavement and help to enact their own freedom. The label slave narrative, which emerged in the late 1930s during the Federal Writers Project, exemplifies “anagrammatical blackness,” as theorized by Christina Sharpe. The term perpetuates a reductive framework that de-centers the writers’ accomplishments and sustains the afterlives of slavery.

“Just Don’T Frighten The Horses”: Discussing Porn And Kink In Fandom Spaces, Hillary Hencely
“Just Don’T Frighten The Horses”: Discussing Porn And Kink In Fandom Spaces, Hillary Hencely
Graduate Research Showcase
In my presentation, I plan to discuss why the banning of sexually explicit content is occurring in fandom spaces, who is trying to ban this content, and why it should matter to people both inside and outside of fandom. I also intend to look at these answers within the framework of feminism and fandom culture. When fanfiction is considered to be literature, it is easy to see why fanfiction matters. This is especially true when the authors of fanfiction are primarily women and are told that their content might be harmful to others through the reasoning that pornography is anti-feminist. …

Music As An Instructional Modality To Increase Attending Behavior Of Elementary Students, Zachary Grossman
Music As An Instructional Modality To Increase Attending Behavior Of Elementary Students, Zachary Grossman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Audio and audiovisual cues, when used as teaching tools, result in desirable learning outcomes for young learners when compared to visual cues alone (Havy et al., 2017; Kirkham et al., 2019; Sloutsky & Napolitano, 2003). Previous research has demonstrated that music can be an effective delivery method for teaching math in the elementary classrooms (An & Tillman, 2015; An et al., 2014; Azaryahu et al., 2020). However, the effectiveness of music at increasing attending behavior specifically has not been assessed in these studies. This study evaluated the effectiveness of music based instruction on students’ attending behaviors compared to non-music based …

Organizations Ensuring Resilience: A Case Study Of Cortez, Florida, Karla Ariel Maddox
Organizations Ensuring Resilience: A Case Study Of Cortez, Florida, Karla Ariel Maddox
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
“Resilience” has often been defined by examining case studies in resilience failures. In contrast, this case study utilizes the oldest, still functional fishing village in Cortez, Florida to rhetorically analyze how organizational communicative practices have worked to ensure its resilience. Situating this conversation within Rhetoric proves valuable since so many attempts to define and utilize “resilience” seek to capitalize on its positive connotation but distort resilience definitions and practice. This dissertation explores three research questions: 1. “What systems and/or structures made our continued existence possible and what ideologies or goals drove their creation?” 2. “What ideologies, perceptions, and/or goals inspired …

Romantic And Victorian Era: Fashion Reimagined, Sara E. Pacheco
Romantic And Victorian Era: Fashion Reimagined, Sara E. Pacheco
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
This venture was about reimaginations of the Romantic and Victorian era fashion through the person of Audrey Hepburn, a famous 1960’s Movie star. The Romantic and Victorian eras were chosen because of their similarities and the beauty of those eras in expressing femininity for women. The colors served as a main source of inspiration because they conveyed a feminine vintage feel for the garments. Additionally, inspiration was drawn from the patterns and textures of fabric, especially silk textiles whose satin finish complemented the shiny, smooth, and silky feel of the fabrics. The reimagined fashion images on display illustrate how a …

A Modern Twist Based On The 17th Century And Victorian Era, Kenzie Styles
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
This project was an exploration of the 17th Century and Victorian styles with a modern twist to suit Cher, who is an iconic famous signer and actress, in her teens and early 20s. Most of the inspiration for the designs was taken from undergarments and silhouettes inspired by both eras. As well as light feminine colors inspired by the eras, combined with dark greens and blues to create a modern effect. Details of the garments include lace and embroidery inspired by the artwork of the 17th century.

Transmisogyny In Popular Culture, Feminisms, And Shakespeare Studies, Lisa S. Starks
Transmisogyny In Popular Culture, Feminisms, And Shakespeare Studies, Lisa S. Starks
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
In this article, I deal with the disparagement of femininity and trans persons in multiple levels of our culture, including in some feminist theory and Shakespearean criticism. I point out that contemporary culture, patriarchal institutions, and some feminist positions share misogynistic stances towards expressions and embodiments of femininity; and these perspectives carry over into some criticism, as well as our academic institutions and classrooms. I examine the double-standard that is often applied to feminine-gendered behavior and bodies in contemporary culture and the profession. In so doing, I address the points of tension and common ground between feminist, queer, and transgender …
