The Great Gatsby Graphic Novel’S Illustrator Aya Morton’S Admiration Of Vincent Van Gogh And Company, Sarah Cisco
Undergraduate Research Conference
I chose to study F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby alongside Aya Morton's recent graphic novel adaptation. As scholars have noted the influence that modernist art had on Fitzgerald's writing style, I explored the influence that — impressionists and post-impressionist artists — had on Morton's renditions.

Social Isolation And Third Place, Katelyn Bauer
Student Research Symposium
Social isolation and human connection are key to human quality of life. This research was undertaken to understand what spaces could help to foster social interaction and connection. Third places, the place between home and work, were found to have significant positive impact on both individuals and communities. The presentation discusses the criteria of third place, examples, benefits, and some causes of loss of third place in modern society.
Robert: Sacrificial Witchcraft In Uganda, Ashytn Mendenhall
Robert: Sacrificial Witchcraft In Uganda, Ashytn Mendenhall
Student Research Symposium
In 2020, I met a young boy named Robert who was brought to Logan Utah, from Uganda due to being a victim of sacrificial witchcraft. Since then, I've kept in touch with Robert and the organizations that help protect children in Uganda. After learning of this cruelty, my thoughts and emotions have been consumed with one question “how can I help?”. My research has allowed me to see how I could apply my undergraduate Interior Architecture and Design knowledge to create a Surgical center in a location they feel safe, the Kyampisi Childcare Ministry (KCM) compound.
The Value Of Neurologic Music Therapy For A Student Music Therapist, Katie Fairbourn
The Value Of Neurologic Music Therapy For A Student Music Therapist, Katie Fairbourn
Student Research Symposium
Neurologic Music Therapy(NMT) is an interdisciplinary training, unaffiliated with the music therapy profession. NMT is a world wide medical organization that specializes in research, techniques and practices that specialize in the brain's relationship with music. Due to the broad nature of the music therapy profession, many undergraduate students either briefly know about NMT or don't know anything about it at all. Research has proven the effectiveness of NMT techniques and principles, but no one has examined the worth of NMT training when combined with music therapy education and clinical experience. My project examines and analyzes the effect of NMT on the …
Reason And Rationality In The Post-Pandemic Era, Jordan Schwanke
Reason And Rationality In The Post-Pandemic Era, Jordan Schwanke
Student Research Symposium
My research investigates human reason and rationality's proper function and role in the Post-Pandemic Era. First, humans can intuit reasons for their beliefs and intuitions. But more importantly, reason is the metarepresentational ability to evaluate the strengths or weaknesses of reasons and arguments. Reason, through the process of evolution, is fundamentally used for justification and argumentation. Second, individuals can summon reason to justify an established moral intuition. Argumentation helps interlocutors self-reflect on political and moral beliefs, opinions, and intuitions, influencing people to change their minds. Third, human reason and rationality are accompanied by internal cognitive limitations: confirmation bias influences the …
Designing With Pink: Exploring Gender-Based Price Disparity Within Packaging Design, Kylie Grant
Designing With Pink: Exploring Gender-Based Price Disparity Within Packaging Design, Kylie Grant
Student Research Symposium
'The Pink Tax' broadly refers to the general tendency for products marketed toward female consumers to be more expensive than those marketed toward male consumers. This instance is seen most often in beauty and self care products, including items such as deodorant, body wash, clothing, etc. The name comes from the observation that many of the products marketed to women are pink. The name does not refer to actual tax. This study explores the validity of the claims surrounding the Pink Tax- and specifically focuses of packaging design's role in gender-based price discrimination. This includes the use of color, typography, …

Flight, Hannah Davis
Flight, Hannah Davis
2023 Student Academic Showcase
My manuscript, Flight, is a novel concerned with intersections, and examines how the borders between humans, both artificial and circumstantial, can be interpreted as ways of connecting with one another. It is a hybrid novel written in the form of a braided essay that integrates both nonfiction excerpts that span from grief philosophy to music history to biology, and lyrical narrative. It addresses grief from multiple angles, examining the holes that other grief literature has not addressed. In a time concerned with polarization, such a manuscript, though experimental, has become more pertinent than ever. Other books similar to it are …
The Awakening’S Edna Pontellier, Female Companionship, And The Sea, Mary Aldrich
The Awakening’S Edna Pontellier, Female Companionship, And The Sea, Mary Aldrich
2023 Student Academic Showcase
Since the release of Kate Chopin’s foundational feminist novel The Awakening, scholars have speculated about what the protagonist Edna Pontellier’s journey says about 19th-century womanhood. Utilizing a framework established by queer theorists Adrienne Rich and Elizabeth LeBlanc, I argue that Edna represents a “metaphorical lesbian,” who rejects her expected social role to live a women-centered life. This identity manifests through her relationships with the feminine “mother-woman” Adèle Ratignolle and the more socially-independent pianist Mademoiselle Reisz. Edna’s displeasure with both these contrasting lifestyles contributes to her return to the sea, an unambiguously female figure Edna simultaneously views as a mother …
Beyond ‘Bisexual’: Toward A New Conceptualization Of Bi+ Experience, Brook Hutchinson
Beyond ‘Bisexual’: Toward A New Conceptualization Of Bi+ Experience, Brook Hutchinson
Student Research Symposium
Scholars have begun to explore the sexuality binary and the way it is experienced by and reinforced among bisexual individuals. However, extant research has not yet analyzed the experiences of bi+ individuals in heterosexual relationships, including those who have never experienced a non-heterosexual relationship. The current study seeks to fill this gap through a case study of bi+ individuals in Utah. Relying on in-depth interviews with sixteen bi+ identified individuals, this study explores the experiences of bi+ individuals engaged in heterosexual relationships and how these individuals define their sexuality and negotiate their identity. Preliminary analyses reveal unique experiences among this …
Incredible Witnesses: An Analysis Of Thomas Of Cantimpré’S Use Of Witnesses In The Lives Of Christina The Astonishing And Margaret Of Ypres, Marianne Hale
Student Research Symposium
I will be analyzing two of the works of Thomas of Cantimpré. An initial study of the secondary literature surrounding Christina the Astonishing and Margaret of Ypres showed a lack of attention to the witnesses used by Thomas. I researched primary and secondary literature surrounding the hagiographies of Margaret of Ypres and Christina the Astonishing and the function of witnesses in secular and religious courts to generate guidelines to assess how witnesses were used. What I found is that Thomas used many kinds of witnesses from various levels in society and various relationships to the subjects. The preponderance of his …
The Zionist Mindset: How The Perception Of Israel Pushed Mormonism Toward Apocalypticism, Andrew Barber
The Zionist Mindset: How The Perception Of Israel Pushed Mormonism Toward Apocalypticism, Andrew Barber
Student Research Symposium
Since its very inception, and regardless of sect, the Mormon religious movement has always shared a similar ideology of Millennialism, the belief that Christ is preparing the world and especially Israel, for his imminent return. But especially, the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has felt a parallel between their religious persecution and exodus to the Salt Lake Valley, and the similar Jewish Exodus and religious persecution both in the Old Testament and during the Holocaust.
Ethics, Fashion, And Film In The 1950s And 60s, Sara Miner
Ethics, Fashion, And Film In The 1950s And 60s, Sara Miner
Student Research Symposium
Hollywood fashions are deeply implicated in western cultural discourses around notions of individualism and free expression. Hollywood offers fantasies of freedom through the desire for and consuming of the images and materials of fashion. Notions of individualism and freedom reflect the Enlightenment traditions of individualism, autonomy, and self-determination.

Solutions To The Water Crisis By Cache Valley Residents, Marinda Lamb, Brooke Piippo
Student Research Symposium
Cache Valley is full of water, yet has been plagued by the water crisis like much of the Western United States. We employed a few different methods to interview residents of Cache Valley, separating them into groups of community members, water managers, and farmers. In our research we attempted to determine how each of these groups thought the water crisis should be solved.
Masculine Women, Feminine Men, And Androgyny: Gender Expression In Ancient Rome, Samuel Cash
Masculine Women, Feminine Men, And Androgyny: Gender Expression In Ancient Rome, Samuel Cash
Student Research Symposium
Transgender individuals are erased from the historical narrative due to little definitive evidence of their existence in language, literature, or the archaeological record. Items like clothing, textiles, and wigs, which distinguished them from cisgender people, are largely lost to time. However, one way that we can view gender nonconformity is through art. Recently, historians recognized that homosexuality in antiquity was common. It took several centuries to come to the consensus that queer individuals existed. Gender identity and the complexity of gender expression in the ancient world is still debated among historians. While historians tend to negate the existence of transgender …
Shifting The Paradigm With Wednesday Addams: Why Nuanced, Intersectional Portrayals Of Autistic People Matter, Camille Bassett
Shifting The Paradigm With Wednesday Addams: Why Nuanced, Intersectional Portrayals Of Autistic People Matter, Camille Bassett
Student Research Symposium
For decades, Autistic people have been portrayed in the media through dehumanizing stereotypes such as the robot, the superhuman savant, and the empty shell. Through these stereotypes, Autistic people are construed as non-human, above-human, and sub-human but never as human beings with complexity, authenticity, and dignity. In addition to being stereotypical, depictions of Autistic people have historically featured white and male characters, a longstanding pattern that erases Autistic women and people of color, among others. In 2022, however, Netflix’s spinoff series of The Addams Family, Wednesday, brought to the screen one of the very first autistic-coded women of color—its titular …
Victorian Architecture In Modern Day Living, Sarah Haslam
Victorian Architecture In Modern Day Living, Sarah Haslam
Student Research Symposium
The Victorian era was a period between 1820 and 1914 around the time of Queen Victoria’s reign. It was a time when the population and economy were growing, and Britain was the most powerful empire in the world. During this period, Britain was the cultural capital of the English-speaking world. The culture and art during this time were picturesque, rich, and dramatic. Much of Victorian design consisted of decorative details and rich color combinations.Society has shifted to more modern design with clean lines, neutral color schemes, and minimalistic details. Over the years, we have lost quality and detail. Many homes …
Critiquing The Present And Imagining The Future: Diversity In Contemporary Young Adult Dystopian Fiction, Ericka Stone
Critiquing The Present And Imagining The Future: Diversity In Contemporary Young Adult Dystopian Fiction, Ericka Stone
Student Research Symposium
This project investigates the historic and contemporary representations of diversity in young adult dystopian literature. First, the functions of utopia and dystopia are examined, as each genre seeks to create change within society, whether it is by presenting the possibility of a more hopeful future, or by projecting the problems of the present into a terrifying vision of what might happen if change is not made. By examining the elements of utopian and dystopian fiction and the way each genre conveys their themes, this project seeks to locate the significance of diversity and representation of all races, ethnicities, genders, and …

Abraham in Egypt, by Hugh W. Nibley, second edition, edited by Gary P. Gillum. This book duplicates the original 1981 volume published by Deseret Book but adds chapters from Nibley's "A New Look at the Pearl of Great Price" series that appeared in the Improvement Era from 1968 to 1970. Nibley examines discoveries that have shed light on Abraham and his times and that help confirm the authenticity of the Book of Abraham. Available in spring 2000.
