Exploring The Expressive Beauty Of Brahms' Op. 119, No. 1: A Journey Through The Composer's Late Piano Works, Jiaqi Zhang
Exploring The Expressive Beauty Of Brahms' Op. 119, No. 1: A Journey Through The Composer's Late Piano Works, Jiaqi Zhang
Student Research Symposium
Brahms' Intermezzo in B minor, Op. 119, No. 1 is a profound and beautiful piece that exemplifies the composer's mastery of harmony, melody, and form present in his final works for piano. This composition reflects the cyclical nature of life and also provides insight into Brahms' own personal struggles. Emotional intensity is achieved through harmonic tension and release, and effective interpretation requires pianists to deeply understand these harmonic processes. An examination of both the state of Brahms' experiences during the time of this composition and the harmonic aspects of the piece can deepen one's understanding and appreciation of this late …

How Does Protein Content Of Flour Affect Sourdough Bread?, Julie Eggett, Callie Goble, Whitney Nelson
Student Research Symposium
The goal of this experiment was to evaluate if the micro-differences in protein content of bread flour made a difference in volume, air cell size, appearance, texture and flavor of sourdough bread. The flour used in this experiment included Bob’s Red Mill Artisan Bread Flour, Big J Mill Golden Loaf Bread Flour, Gold Medal Bread Flour. The protein contents were 13%, 12.7%, and 10.5%, respectively. The bread was baked using a standard recipe with only the brand of bread flour varying from sample to sample. The samples were then objectively and subjectively measured. Volume of bread samples of equal weight …

Moving Toward Global Feminism: Consciousness Of Borders And Implementing Angry Feminism, Cameron Hallman
Moving Toward Global Feminism: Consciousness Of Borders And Implementing Angry Feminism, Cameron Hallman
English MA Theses
In this Thesis, I argue that in order to get to global feminism, there must be a consciousness of borders, such as racism, islamophobia, sexism, etc, and there must be an implementation of angry feminism to combat patriarchal systems. In "Chapter One: Moving Toward A More Global Feminism," I introduce theorists Said, Djebar, Spivak, and Mohanty, to lay the groundwork for understanding those borders. In "Chapter Two: Under The Western Gaze: An Example of One Arab-American Woman's Experience in the United States," I examine Laila Lalami's The Other Americans and apply the theorists' ideas from Chapter One: Moving Toward A …

Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Led Songwriting Intervention On Quality Of Life For Individuals With Chronic Pain, Marcia Henry
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Abstract
Chronic pain affects 20% of the U.S. and global population. With the worsening opioid crisis there is a growing need for alternative therapies. Individuals with chronic pain often experience depression, stress, and poor quality of life. The Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms guided this prospective cohort design project in a pilot study (N = 13) examining the effectiveness of songwriting to improve quality of life in this population. A master’s prepared nurse and experienced songwriter administered 6 weekly songwriting sessions in an online chronic pain support group. Chronic pain (Graded Chronic Pain Scale-Revised & Pain Enjoyment General Activities subscale), depression …

"Like A Shadow Or Even A Dream": Memory And Haptic Motifs On Classical Attic Funerary Stelai, Vonne Daszkilewicz
"Like A Shadow Or Even A Dream": Memory And Haptic Motifs On Classical Attic Funerary Stelai, Vonne Daszkilewicz
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
During the third quarter of the fifth century BCE, Athens witnessed the revival of funerary stele reliefs. Sculpted motifs representing touch and interaction, often situated within familial scenes, characterized the grave monuments and contributed strongly to their tactility. Haptic stele motifs promoted the construction of memory by heightening the depiction of lasting bonds between living and deceased individuals. Grave reliefs provide a lasting representation of the deceased, while also serving as conspicuous reminders of the permanence of death. However, Attic funerary stelai provided a physical substitute for the departed towards which the living could direct their continued care and dedication. …

Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria G. Vielma
Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria G. Vielma
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Numerous scholars have investigated the significant role that representation and mentorship play in the success of Latinas and other women of color during their journey through higher education, from degree completion to faculty hiring and advancement (Vasquez 1982, Zambrana et. al. 1997, Valdez 2001, Cavazos & Cavazos 2010, Shayne 2020, Contreras et. al. 2022). However, little research exists surrounding the lived experiences that have shaped mentorship carried out by university faculty, specifically, mentorship carried out by bilingual Latina faculty in higher education. Through a Latina Feminist Epistemology implementing Oral History Methodologies, this thesis aims to understand the cycle of mentorship …
Maturing Manga: An Analysis Of Adult Themes In Shōnen Manga, Audrey Leahy
Maturing Manga: An Analysis Of Adult Themes In Shōnen Manga, Audrey Leahy
Honors College Theses
Manga is a Japanese form of visual storytelling comparable to comic books and graphic novels that has seen a significant increase in popularity abroad in the twenty-first century. In Japan, manga is published in magazines intended for particular target audiences. The two most prominent of these are shōnen, manga for young men, and seinen, manga for adult men. This paper examines these demographics and explores the growing similarities between these two demographics. The research compares the adult content and themes of manga in both shōnen and seinen manga. The series Dorohedoro and Chainsaw Man were analyzed both quantitatively for amounts …

Perceptions Of Disabilities Among Native Americans Within The State Of Utah, Erica Ficklin, Melissa Tehee, Sherry Marx, Eduardo Ortiz, Megan E. Golson, Tyus Roanhorse
Psychology Student Research
Currently, little research exists on disabilities among Native American communities and no research exists on how Native Americans perceive disabilities, services currently available, and unmet needs. Understanding these key areas is essential to providing efficacious and culturally relevant care. To address this gap in the literature, we used Indigenous research methodology through sharing circles throughout the state of Utah to listen and amplify the voices of the Native communities. Participants shared how they conceptualize "disability," what they thought of current services, and how they thought the needs of Native persons with disabilities should be addressed. Four major themes emerged in …

Personifying Inanimate Objects: A Study Through Movement, Delainey Bailey, Tricia Zweier
2023 Student Academic Showcase
This project explores how inanimate objects can be personified through movement. The chosen item for this work, a kaleidoscope, inspired many of the gestures, energies, and expressions for this original piece of choreography that premiered in the Lindenwood University Winter 2022 Dance Concert. My poster presentation will highlight many components of the kaleidoscope that were used as inspiration in this piece: the colors, patterns, shapes, and pathways. This work, titled “Kaleidoscope,” is centered around eight dancers that travel through circular pathways in a colorful ambiance to find contentment in the perfect patterns of the kaleidoscope. Each of their journeys are …

"Doubt" follows a depressed and isolated young man who must contend with the physical manifestation of his depression and self doubt. Through this narrative, our protagonist learns truths about the human condition, and the lies that we all tell ourselves to keep us more expanding as human beings. The story follows and details how depression and trauma can flare up at inopportune times and places, and how we must accept ourselves and those around us for our/their flaws in order to grow as people. Strength is looking our failures and insecurities in the eyes and moving forward regardless., despite the …

2023 Student Academic Showcase
This project is an exploration of the themes of community investigation and mistrust surrounding sin in Hawthorne's description of the Puritans in The Scarlet Letter. It explores these themes by using a board game as an interpretive device to fill a framework of space, place, and identity that shifts each time the game is played anew. Every interpretation of the actions of each main character will change as the location, identity, and sin committed are shuffled around and re-matched in different combinations as each of these characters seek Hester out to verify their thoughts on the sins being committed in …

Translation As Process, Drew Gvillo, Justine Pas
2023 Student Academic Showcase
My poster presentation is an in-depth explanation and discussion of what translation of languages is. It defines what translation is and what performing a translation entails. It explains how there are many common misconceptions about translations and attempts to disprove them. This in-depth discussion of translation factors such as language identity, culture acceptance, political factors, and much more aid in explaining how translations can be used for good and for bad. Translations can be used to break language and cultural barriers but they can also be used to divide people. It is up to the translator and those in power …
The Female Other: Feminist Existentialism And Crisis In The Great Gatsby, Hazel Denother, Justine Pas
The Female Other: Feminist Existentialism And Crisis In The Great Gatsby, Hazel Denother, Justine Pas
2023 Student Academic Showcase
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of several unsatisfied characters who try over and over again to achieve happiness, which seems to be forever beyond their reach. In their cycles of dissatisfaction, many of the characters use romance, courtship, and sex as a tool to create fulfilling lives for themselves, but not one of them is successful in these endeavors. The principle female characters, who feel trapped and powerless in the lives they have ended up in, begin their love affairs out of an arguably deeper place of desperation than the male characters. When read through …
