Governor Wise's War: Burn Notice (Part 3), John M. Rudy Apr 2011

Governor Wise's War: Burn Notice (Part 3), John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

The early teens of April seem to have been specifically engineered by Ex-governor Wise and some of the members of the Secession convention jonesing for separation of from the Union. A notice ran in the Alexandria Gazette on April 1st, declaring that on the 16th of that month a, "grand Secession demonstration," would be held in Richmond. Among those signing the notice was Henry Wise. The Gazette reported that, first news of it came from Norfolk," just a stones throw from Wise's home in Princess Anne County. "Perhaps they think the Convention too slow," the Gazette presumed, "and wish to …

The Rhetoric Of Second Chance: The Invention Of Ethos For An Ex-Offender, Modu Fofana-Kamara Apr 2011

The Rhetoric Of Second Chance: The Invention Of Ethos For An Ex-Offender, Modu Fofana-Kamara

Theses and Dissertations

For many, literacy is reading and writing- a critical tool for ethos construction. But for a marginalized group of ex-offenders, former prison inmates, who were not accustomed to reading and writing as an agent for character invention, the ability to employ literacy and to construct ethos was a challenging and almost unsuccessful attempt. I discuss in this thesis a community-writing project I designed as a graduate student and my partnership with Boaz & Ruth, a local faith-based non-profit organization working with ex-offenders. Through the collaboration I facilitated writing skills workshop, which objective was to have the ex-offenders to write personal …

Signifying Ruins: The Wreck And Rebirth Of Modernity, Language, And Representation, Audrey Farley Apr 2011

Signifying Ruins: The Wreck And Rebirth Of Modernity, Language, And Representation, Audrey Farley

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores formal and thematic representations of ruins in twentieth century literary texts, including James Joyce’s Ulysses, T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, and Adrienne Rich’s “Diving into the Wreck.” Analyzing these texts and concepts of ruins in the theoretical work of Jacques Derrida, Walter Benjamin, and Julia Kristeva, I argue that ruins underscore the arbitrariness—and, thus, the fragility—of symbolic systems of signification. Ruins, by virtue of their fragmentation, invite nostalgic projections of totality only to betray totality as an illusion. Thus, the imagination of wholeness that the ruin incites allows—only to disallow—meaning. Modernity and …

Welcome To The Circus: Finding Ways To Artistically Express The Martial Way, Donzell Lewis Apr 2011

Welcome To The Circus: Finding Ways To Artistically Express The Martial Way, Donzell Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores various artistic and ritual practices of martial arts in relation to its presentation on stage. As a martial artist and actor I believe there are complementary practices in both crafts interdisciplinary of each other. For a martial artist, the individual’s performance and execution of martial arts techniques can be enhanced through emotional availability and characterization. For the actor, the martial arts can help condition the body physically, mentally and emotionally to create a grounded presence of connectivity to the earth. However, sometimes the martial arts are viewed as a militaristic discipline and not as artistic expression. I …

What Is Conservatism?, Heidi Peters

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

The re-branding of the right manifested itself in conservative movements and gatherings across the country in-between 2008 & 2010. One of those events included Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor Rally on August 28, 2010. This research project is a case study that illustrates how the conservative political ideology is defined and rejuvenated after massive defeat.

Dark Matter Series, Barbara Ryan Apr 2011

Dark Matter Series, Barbara Ryan

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

The Dark Matter series explores my recent interest in the theories of dark matter, which is present in both the vast universe and microscopic DNA. Drawings, prints, paintings and jewelry forms are shaped out of simple repeated marks and relate to the unknown forms of dark matter which are thought to comprise up to 80% of the universe. Scratched, drawn, etched, painted and cast metal objects populate a space with and without gravity. Marks are often so small, they prove difficult to see in a singular sense and can be read only as a mass. Images and titles revolve around …

Gatsby And Jazz: One Coin, Two Sides, Sally Van Der Graaff Apr 2011

Gatsby And Jazz: One Coin, Two Sides, Sally Van Der Graaff

2011 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Toni Morrison's JAZZ both tell the story of the American 1920s, but from opposite points of view. Fitzgerald and Morrison offer two compelling narratives of the societal shift that took place in post-World War 1-era America, but although the accounts share the same general topic and historical era, it is otherwise difficult to reconcile the two American portraits that have been painted. It is as though the two authors are giving a description of the same coin, but one describes the front and the other describes the back. To the white population this …

The 'Truthiness' Of The 'Daily Show Effect': A Presidency Study, Holly Thomas Apr 2011

The 'Truthiness' Of The 'Daily Show Effect': A Presidency Study, Holly Thomas

2011 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

News-gathering for the American public changed in the past decade with a decline in trust for journalists and news media (Jones 2009), technology advancement (Haynes and Pitts 2009), and entertainment becoming a priority (Jones 2009; Haynes and Pitts 2009; Baumgartner and Morris 2006; Colletta 2009). Television, radio, and newspapers (the traditional media) are still used today with broadcast and cable television being the dominate news source (Colletta 2009; Haynes and Pitts 2009), however, an increased amount of Americans utilize the internet for their news information through what is known as new media, referring to Web blogs and social networks. Haynes …

View Ms. Strykowski's Photographic Artwork.

The emergence ofthe digital camera has made photography less expensive, faster, and easier to share. Technology and material upgrades aside, many self-described photographers do not have the slightest idea about what goes on beyond the obvious. What I am referring to is the design and compositional elements of photographs. What makes a shot and its' editing successful? Why? How do you follow the rules and mix in personal touch? As a young aspiring artist on the verge of entering the cut-throat world of photography I feel the need to express my knowledge of design …

Exploring Identity Through Genetic And Genealogical Research: Development Of A Collaborative Course Between Humanities And Biology, James Doan, Emily F. Schmitt Lavin

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

In this paper, data from student projects completed in their HONR 1000N: Genetics and Genealogy course, taught during winter 2010, are presented. Students traced their deep ancestry through mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA analysis, as well as more recent ancestry, using genealogical databases and family histories. Frequently, students were challenged or pleasantly surprised by the information they gleaned. Genetic and genealogical research can provide clues to one’s identity and ethnic background, as well as potential medical conditions.

Beginning Conducting Curricula: Building Course Objectives Upon The Foundations Of Aural Image And Natural Body Movement, Tobin E. Stewart Apr 2011

Beginning Conducting Curricula: Building Course Objectives Upon The Foundations Of Aural Image And Natural Body Movement, Tobin E. Stewart

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Beginning conducting textbooks are structured so as to privilege the mastery of generic conducting gestures over the foundations of developing an aural image through score study which in turn stimulates effective and natural body movement. Rather than deriving motion from an aural image, students are expected to show proficiency with generic gestures applied to score markings. In learning these gestures, students not only struggle to develop coordination and effective movement, but they also fail to recognize inorganic and unhealthy movement habits and how these influence performers.

Rather than structuring a course around generic techniques, this document proposes to start with …
