Measured Chance, Brian R. Kluge Apr 2011

Measured Chance, Brian R. Kluge

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In my practice I use clay to make enigmatic, non-representational sculptures that employ reductive geometry and archetypal forms. By pressing clay into a variety of molds, it is my intention to contrast a primal crudeness with a skilled precision in my handling of the material. I fabricate objects that range in scale from handheld to human- size. In this work, I combine references to the forms of manmade things with surfaces that allude to age and wear resulting from natural patinas that occur on stone, wood, or metal. This body of work shares qualities with the Minimalist and Earth Art …

The Message And The Situation: An Evaluation Of The Preaching Of Paul Tillich, Benjamin Taylor Apr 2011

The Message And The Situation: An Evaluation Of The Preaching Of Paul Tillich, Benjamin Taylor

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In much of Western Christianity, there exists a problem of identity for the Christian individual. The individual considers him or herself a Christian, but feels a matter of disconnect between who he or she is on Saturday night and who he or she is on Sunday morning. The Christian struggles to live a life in both the sacred and the secular. The Christian struggles to establish an authentic identity, an identity that incorporates all of the human experience. How can this struggle be resolved? Paul Tillich had an answer. Tillich developed his method of correlation as a way of uniting …

Theological Conviviality In “The Religious Banquet”: The Case For Reconciliation Between Erasmus And Luther, Kathleen Borchers Apr 2011

Theological Conviviality In “The Religious Banquet”: The Case For Reconciliation Between Erasmus And Luther, Kathleen Borchers

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The relationship between the two well-known theologians, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Martin Luther, has been thoroughly discussed over the centuries, especially concerning their debate over free will. Although this debate would eventually lead to a parting of the ways, there was a time during the Reformation when Erasmus and Luther worked to bring about reconciliation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Evangelical Protestants. As a humanist, Erasmus communicated his religious ideas and opinions through a variety of texts and discourses. His dialogue, "The Religious Banquet," is an unexpectedly useful prism through which to view Erasmus' commentaries on the Church. …

Novels In The Internet Age: “House Of Leaves” And New Media’S Influence In Contemporary Fictional Literature, Tyler Gegg Apr 2011

Novels In The Internet Age: “House Of Leaves” And New Media’S Influence In Contemporary Fictional Literature, Tyler Gegg

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The now-ubiquitous nature of the Internet has changed the way we see the world, and these changes must be reflected in how we experience other media forms. Postmodern works such as Harry Mathew's "The Journalist" have challenged the way we read and electronic literature like Steve Tomasula's "Toc" have stretched the use of the digital to produce stories; but contemporary literature combines the medium and techniques of postmodern literature with the character of the digital. This project explores the influences of the characteristics and attitudes of the Internet medium as they are partially realized in Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud …

Cross-Cultural Educational Fallbacks: A Study Of Homeschooling In The Hispanic Community And The Reasons For Its Utilization, Luke Easterday Apr 2011

Cross-Cultural Educational Fallbacks: A Study Of Homeschooling In The Hispanic Community And The Reasons For Its Utilization, Luke Easterday

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

A popular belief held by many Americans is that Caucasian families homeschool based on a desire to shield their children from the outside world and to pass on particular religious beliefs. However, among the Hispanic community, homeschooling is often implemented due to a lack of resources in the community. Many Hispanic parents utilize this nontraditional educational method due to a desire to raise their children bilingually, to pass on their cultural heritage, and to have an active role in the academic lives of their children. Quite often, the communities in which Hispanic families live do not have many resources available …

Examining Eschatologies Of Glory And The Eschatology Of The Cross In A Theology Of Hope And A Fire In My Belly, Wendy Mallette Apr 2011

Examining Eschatologies Of Glory And The Eschatology Of The Cross In A Theology Of Hope And A Fire In My Belly, Wendy Mallette

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This paper utilizes the theological framework developed in Jūrgen Moltmann's A Theology of Hope to examine David Wojnarowicz's film, A Fire in My Belly. Moltmann's work criticizes eschatologies of glory that can be seen when the church emphasizes heavenly salvation at the expense of earthly life. Instead, Moltmann poses the eschatology of the cross that leads the believer to hope for God's transformation of the earth on which the cross stands and sends the believer back to struggle in the world. Using these theological categories, this paper examines Wojnarowicz's film. The footage from A Fire in My Belly contains …

What Should Christians Take From The Native American Church Peyote Ceremony?, Brian Rajcok Apr 2011

What Should Christians Take From The Native American Church Peyote Ceremony?, Brian Rajcok

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Native American religious tradition is a fascinating subject. Yet most Americans know very little about the spiritual practices of indigenous peoples. As a curious student of theology, I explored the modern Native American Church in my senior seminar research paper. I attended a peyote ceremony – a healing ritual using the hallucinogenic cactus peyote – and studied the history, theology, and practice of the Native American Church. Through my research and experience, I have seen similarities between my own Christian tradition and the Native American Church and contend that the sacramental use of peyote can be a powerful spiritual tool …

In the late 90's hip-hop started as a form of encouragement and empowerment for black people who struggled when growing up. Hip Hop gave black people a voice, where their opinions and challenges could be heard throughout the world. Today the genre of Hip-hop music has developed into a negative image that degrades women and negatively influences the younger black community. Think about some of the hip-hop music at the top of the charts; the songs that disrespect woman, and contains far too much explicit content that it has society desensitized. The pervasiveness of today' …

Possibilities For Tuba Quartet/Ensemble And Percussion, Anthony J. Burnham Apr 2011

Possibilities For Tuba Quartet/Ensemble And Percussion, Anthony J. Burnham

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Possibilities for Tuba Quartet/Ensemble and Percussion is an exploration of the possibilities and potential that such an ensemble contains. The piece is set in sevencontrasting movements, each of which highlight, showcase, and challenge different members of the ensemble. Knowing that music for such a group is limited in quantity and scope, this piece has been written to fill a void in the repertoire for both the low brass and percussion families while allowing them an opportunity to collaborate on a level rarely seen. This piece presents a very unique and fun experience for performers and listeners alike.

The Chinese In Northern Mexico: Immigration, Integration, And Discrimination In Mexican Society, 1882-1940, Yesenia M. Alaniz Apr 2011

The Chinese In Northern Mexico: Immigration, Integration, And Discrimination In Mexican Society, 1882-1940, Yesenia M. Alaniz

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

In The Chinese in Northern Mexico: Immigration, Integration, and Discrimination 1882-1940, the focus is on understanding what compelled the Chinese to immigrate to Mexico and how their lives in the country developed over time. After the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation was signed by both nations in 1899, the Chinese saw Mexico as an alternative to the United States, which was not allowing any Chinese to enter the country. The first part of the paper looks into the immigration patterns that led to the Chinese arrival, then shifts into examining what type of jobs, industries, and overall experience the …

Conrad Wise Chapman And The Mexican Landscape, Marisa Day Apr 2011

Conrad Wise Chapman And The Mexican Landscape, Marisa Day

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on several paintings of the Mexican landscape produced by Conrad Wise Chapman (1842 – 1910) and held by the Valentine Richmond History Center in Richmond, Virginia. Chapman lived in Mexico from 1865 to 1867 and from 1883 to 1908 (with a few short absences), and during this period, produced a large number of landscapes, which are the subject of this thesis and will be considered as an amalgamation of both nineteenth-century Mexican landscape painting and traveler-art. It is the purpose of this study to demonstrate that Chapman’s artistic style embodies both classical components of landscape painting and …

Aging With Independence And Interaction: An Assisted Living Community, Steven J. Flositz Apr 2011

Aging With Independence And Interaction: An Assisted Living Community, Steven J. Flositz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the U.S. population gets older, there is an increased need for senior housing. However, elderly housing is currently associated with dependence and isolation. There is a great disconnect from the retired community with its surrounding context. Senior housing and nursing homes are becoming more similar to miniature hospitals rather than a residential type. This negative view of nursing homes is becoming clear to the general population. In fact, most seniors fear the idea of living within an aging complex. Also, people generally avoid these places, even while visiting family. Florida is on the frontline for the effects of the …

Concepts common to each of these disciplines are then further explored through the lens of bilingual therapy. Practical applications are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.

An Art Therapy Domestic Violence Prevention Group In Mexico, Naomi Tucker, Ana Laura Treviño Apr 2011

An Art Therapy Domestic Violence Prevention Group In Mexico, Naomi Tucker, Ana Laura Treviño

Journal of Clinical Art Therapy

This paper explores the implementation, course of treatment, achievements and limitations of an art therapy domestic violence prevention group in Mexico. The group was part of a Mexican pilot program utilizing a solution-focused model developed by Stith, McCollum, and Rosen (2007) in the U.S. The art therapy group served Otomí clients, who are members of a unique indigenous sub-culture within Mexican society.  A brief literature review discusses domestic violence, solution-focused treatment, couples groups, and the particular complexities of working inter-culturally.  The course of treatment is presented and the achievements and limitations of the program are briefly evaluated within the context …

Understanding Client Imagery In Art Therapy, Erica K.M. Curtis Apr 2011

Understanding Client Imagery In Art Therapy, Erica K.M. Curtis

Journal of Clinical Art Therapy

This study offers a preliminary investigation into the question: How do art therapists make meaning from viewing client-made art? Art therapy literature on making meaning from client art is reviewed. The Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) model used in art education and museum education is also briefly discussed for its parallels to this study’s findings. An adapted form of grounded theory for data collection and analysis was used, leading to emergent themes that suggest that understanding client art requires more than analyzing content and aesthetic elements. More specifically, this inquiry offers the consideration that viewing client art is a dynamic practice …

From Leftovers To Treasured Lands: Discovery Of Lead And Zinc In The Indian Territory Of Northeastern Oklahoma, Chance Riley

Theory and Practice: HIST430

Indian relations have been a major part of American society since America was discovered, and as Americans continued to expand farther west, these issues became increasingly magnified. There are many stories of the trials and tribulations that many Native Americans faced as they were continually persecuted and forced to give up their land. Stories such as the Trail of Tears sprout up in most textbooks throughout schools. However, there are many other stories that seem to slip through the cracks and do not receive near as much spotlight in history lessons today. The story of the Quapaw Tribe, who were …
