Darwin, Victorian Literature, And The Great Web: Analyzing And Dismantling The Human Superiority Complex, Farhad R. Anwarzai Apr 2011

Darwin, Victorian Literature, And The Great Web: Analyzing And Dismantling The Human Superiority Complex, Farhad R. Anwarzai

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In my essay, I will argue that the discrimination and cruelty humans project towards other humans mirrors the discrimination and cruelty humans project towards other species. A moral justification exists behind the need to discriminate against another human or animal. Therefore, the concept of “morality,” which has long been thought to be the root of man‟s “higher” mental capabilities, and which is, I will propose, the cause of racism, sexism, classism, and speciesism, is not an advantageous, or “higher,” trait. Instead, “morality,” if we classify it in Darwinian terms, is a disadvantageous trait that could potentially lead to our devolution …

Shallow Roots: An Analysis Of Filipino Immigrant Labor In Seattle From 1920-1940, Krista Baylon Sorenson Apr 2011

Shallow Roots: An Analysis Of Filipino Immigrant Labor In Seattle From 1920-1940, Krista Baylon Sorenson

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This research looks to understand the disparity between Filipinos and their Asian American counterparts in cultural presence within the United States, especially given the Filipinos large numbers as immigrants to the United States. According to the 2000 United States Census, there were a little over 10 million who self identify solely as Asians. Of these 10 million, about 1,850,000 were Filipinos. This is the second largest Asian immigrant group. Their numbers are only exceeded by the Chinese. Filipinos themselves exceed other Asian groups such as Japanese, Koreans and Asian Indians.3 Historically, while the large majority of Filipinos immigrants settled in …

Shakespeare And Cervantes Are Dead: The Construction Of Fiction And Reality In Hamlet And Don Quixote, Joanna Parypinski Apr 2011

Shakespeare And Cervantes Are Dead: The Construction Of Fiction And Reality In Hamlet And Don Quixote, Joanna Parypinski

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The reason that Hamlet and Don Quixote can be studied so thoroughly on the poststructuralist notion of a false or constructed reality is because they were both works far ahead of their time, often reflecting extremely postmodernist ideas. Don Quixote is generally considered the first modern novel, and Hamlet is also identified with the beginning of the modern age (Oort 319). Yet beyond this, these authors play games with the reader and with the structure of the fiction itself, which would fit sensibly in a 20th or 21st century novel rather than an early 17th century work. These new methods …

Wei Yuan And The Chinese Totalistic Iconoclasm: The Demise Of Confucianism In Matter And In Form, Chao Ren Apr 2011

Wei Yuan And The Chinese Totalistic Iconoclasm: The Demise Of Confucianism In Matter And In Form, Chao Ren

Honors Projects, History

This paper attempts to explore the historical origins of the “totalistic iconoclasm” that was characteristic of Chinese intellectual history in the twentieth century. By examining Wei Yuan’s historical writings, the paper argues that the conceptual connection between the civilization of the majority Han ethnicity (“the Chinese tradition”) and the idea of a political entity of China had already broken down by mid-nineteenth century. The Qing Empire’s political adoption and control of Confucianism suffocated its intellectual creativity and thus Confucianism only existed as custom and in form. As an intellectual reaction to these political manipulations, the essentialist thoughts of the late …

The Sick Person And Science: The Role Of Religion In Medicine And Modernity, Daniel J. Deweert Apr 2011

The Sick Person And Science: The Role Of Religion In Medicine And Modernity, Daniel J. Deweert

Honors Projects

The secularization thesis predicts that science will eventually render religion useless due to inherent incompatibilities. Modern discourses have created a similar conflict between scientific competence and more humanistic aspects of medicine. I will use the secularization thesis to analyze the unusual role of medicine as both a scientific discipline and a venture into the moral realm. Religion affects the way humans understand nature, which impacts the possibility of the scientific method as well as the role of the sick person in society. Though individuals have always been healers, institutionalizing healthcare through the creation of hospitals indicates a profound shift of …

Role Play, Olivia Snider Apr 2011

Role Play, Olivia Snider

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Role Play is a non-fiction essay in which Olivia Snider weaves together specific researched examples from the Stanford Prison experiment with her own narrative of her experience in Rappahannock Regional Jail. Balancing vivid scenes of memoir with speculative re-creations of the events of the Stanford Prison Experiment, Snider constructs an essay that is at once intensely personal and highly credible. She intersperses second-person voice as a link between the experiment and her own experience throughout the essay, and as a means to draw the reader in and invest him in the narrative. Through this framework of the essay, Snider discusses …

Demon At The Doorstep: Lilith As A Reflection Of Anxieties And Desires In Ancient, Rabbinic, And Medieval Jewish Sexuality, Lauren Kinrich Apr 2011

Demon At The Doorstep: Lilith As A Reflection Of Anxieties And Desires In Ancient, Rabbinic, And Medieval Jewish Sexuality, Lauren Kinrich

Pomona Senior Theses

No demon has gained as much notoriety, recognition, or infamy in Jewish culture at the she-demon Lilith. Tracing her origins back to similarly-named demonesses in Ancient Sumeria, Babylonia, and Canaan, Lilith developed throughout Jewish history into a fully-realized seductress, succubus, murderer, and tormenter of men, women, and children. A well-known demoness during the ancient, rabbinic, medieval, and, to some extent, modern periods of Judaism, Lilith was associated with multiple ills of the sexual sphere including masturbation (or onanism, so named for the biblical figure Onan who “spilled his seed on the ground”), adultery, nocturnal emissions, impure thoughts, and bastard children. …

Reception And Influence Of A Postmodernist Opera : John Adams' Nixon In China , 1987-2011, Casey Jo Brege Apr 2011

Reception And Influence Of A Postmodernist Opera : John Adams' Nixon In China , 1987-2011, Casey Jo Brege

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Reviews of these later performances indicate resurgence in popularity and a greater critical grasp of the work's fundamental dramatic and musical dynamic. In the intervening years since the work's premiere, the power negative feelings associated with its principle characters have dimmed in cultural memory, allowing for the overarching statement of the opera to be foremost in the audience's minds. Elements of the production first analyzed as politically naive, have been reexamined as insightful, if not prophetic.

The Wdr Big Band: A Brief History, Gabriela A. Richmond Apr 2011

The Wdr Big Band: A Brief History, Gabriela A. Richmond

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

The years following World War II brought new broadcasting stations to a divided Germany, government regulated radio stations in the East and state regulated stations in the West. Radio broadcasts were a significant cultural source for the Germans in times of reconstruction. Broadcasting stations played much of the familiar Tanz- und Unterhaltungsmusik, reminiscent of earlier times of happiness and prosperity. However, with changes in a new generation’s musical tastes the demand for swing bands declined. Radio stations began to rework their in-house “dance bands” into “jazz bands.” The West Deutscher Rundfunk (WDR), and other broadcast stations, employed jazz musicians …

Using Textual Features To Predict Popular Content On Digg, Paul H. Miller Apr 2011

Using Textual Features To Predict Popular Content On Digg, Paul H. Miller

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Over the past few years, collaborative rating sites, such as Netflix, Digg and Stumble, have become increasingly prevalent sites for users to find trending content.  I used various data mining techniques to study Digg, a social news site, to examine the influence of content on popularity.  What influence does content have on popularity, and what influence does content have on users’ decisions?  Overwhelmingly, prior studies have consistently shown that predicting popularity based on content is difficult and maybe even inherently impossible.  The same submission can have multiple outcomes and content neither determines popularity, nor individual user decisions.  My results show …

Rethinking Success: A Person-Based Approach To Service Learning, Ryan Cales Apr 2011

Rethinking Success: A Person-Based Approach To Service Learning, Ryan Cales

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the nature of service learning projects that are structured to make interventions in rhetorical spheres and seek to achieve social change on a smaller scale rather striving for grander, or even systemic, change. In structuring community projects that include inherently limited interventions and equally limited goals, I argue that such projects should be open to immediate adjustments within themselves –to abandon any particular form or goal—to satisfy the immediate needs of the individuals served. I draw upon my work with a reintegration program for ex-offenders in Richmond, Virginia called Working with Conviction to help demonstrate that service …

Loving In The Present: The Theological And Pastoral Influences Of St. Bonaventure's Critical Retrieval Of Joachim Of Fiore On Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict Xvi, William L. Patenaude Apr 2011

Loving In The Present: The Theological And Pastoral Influences Of St. Bonaventure's Critical Retrieval Of Joachim Of Fiore On Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict Xvi, William L. Patenaude

Theology Graduate Theses

This thesis demonstrates that Pope Benedict XVI has benefited considerably from his 1957 study of St. Bonaventure’s pastoral response to thirteenth-century Franciscan “Spiritualists” and their disruptive acceptance of an imminent or realized eschatology. Joseph Ratzinger noted that Bonaventure’s response included a corrective theology of history that, along with a dialectical engagement of new ways of thought, provided Christianity with a vital understanding of the relation between human history and revelation. The present work examines how these Bonaventurian influences allowed Ratzinger/Benedict XVI to develop from core Christian theological proclamations—particularly the Cross and that God, as Trinity, is relationship and love—a particular …

Aristotle On Truth, Facts, And Relations: Categories, De Interpretatione, Metaphysics Gamma, Blake Hestir Apr 2011

Aristotle On Truth, Facts, And Relations: Categories, De Interpretatione, Metaphysics Gamma, Blake Hestir

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle’s conception of truth looks like this:

TA-Schema: ‘S is P’ is true ↔ S is P.

TA-Schema(n): ‘S is not P’ is true ↔ S is not P.

By Tdf Aristotle need only mean that stating with respect to some property P that is in the case some subject S that P is in the case of S, is what amounts to truth. More precisely then for Aristotle the TA-Schema would amount to:

TA-Schema*: ‘S is P’ is true ↔ the universal P is instantiated in the case of S. TASchema( n)*: ‘S is not P’ is true ↔ …

Being Seen: An Art Historical And Statistical Analysis Of Feminized Worship In Early Modern Rome, Olivia J. Belote Apr 2011

Being Seen: An Art Historical And Statistical Analysis Of Feminized Worship In Early Modern Rome, Olivia J. Belote

History Honors Projects

Female saints in early Christianity found their place in public veneration often through violent means, martyrdom.  These saints, while publicly suffering in the imitation of Christ, were the original agents to navigate the gendered hierarchy within the religion.  Female saints created an avenue for later female worshippers to understand Christianity on a strictly feminine level.  Through the frescoed depictions of these female saints in 18 churches throughout Rome, this paper historically and statistically analyzes how the artistic representations of female saints added to or created a space for feminized worship.
