Hello, Brain, It's Me, Ray Vukcevich Jan 2010

Hello, Brain, It's Me, Ray Vukcevich

On Earth As It Is

Hello, 90% of my brain which is totally, or at least mostly, inaccessible to consciousness, this is the part of us that thinks of itself as “Ray Vukcevich” although sometimes we suspect that part is really “Henry.” Would people have called him “Hank” if things had developed a little differently? What I’m wondering about today is Time. It's a subject that seems so simple at first but is not at all simple and probably has a lot to do with Everything. I’d like to run it by you. I hope you will have ideas. I hope you will tell me …

On Earth As It Is

The word morph sounds so soft but there is

tugging and there is pulling. The unsticking of legs

from the threads breaks any thoughts of grace.

On Earth As It Is

The firemen access our building invisibly. I thought they would stop coming because you summoned strength against them. I’m sure the firemen have instructions for seizures. Kept in a red tool chest. Explicitly labeled help. I’m sure others, like you, ask them to leave. I understand this fear of judgment, yet it is not enough.

On Earth As It Is

Pink pyrola, trailing daisy—magenta flames of shooting stars, brilliant gold of glacier lilies.

Hush now, beloved.

The hummingbird comes to sip from foxglove and Sweet William, drinks from the hollyhock, opens the snapdragon.

Why are you afraid?

A Proper De Jure Objection To The Epistemic Rationality Of Religious Belief, Todd R. Long Jan 2010

A Proper De Jure Objection To The Epistemic Rationality Of Religious Belief, Todd R. Long

Philosophy

I answer Alvin Plantinga’s challenge to provide a ‘proper’ de jure objection to religious belief. What I call the ‘sophisticates’ evidential objection’ (SEO) concludes that sophisticated Christians lack epistemic justification for believing central Christian propositions. The SEO utilizes a theory of epistemic justification in the spirit of the evidentialism of Richard Feldman and Earl Conee. I defend philosophical interest in the SEO (and its underlying evidentialism) against objections from Reformed epistemology, by addressing Plantinga’s criteria for a proper de jure objection, his anti-evidentialist arguments, and the relevance of ‘impulsional evidence’. I argue that no result from Plantinga-style Reformed epistemology precludes …

Work Study Students At Vcu: Quality Versus Quantity, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Denise Branch, Patti Ferguson, Daniel Park, Mary Beth Taormina

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

VCU Libraries’ student full-time equivalents and budget are lower than its peer institutions in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, resulting in a significant lack of funding for student workers. The initial project goals were 1) to identify which steps the VCU Libraries could take to resolve this problem and 2) to investigate if this problem were university-wide in scope. Shortly following this determination, the president’s office VCU Update #10 proposed a “substantial increase in funding for student financial aid” and a university-wide survey on work-study was initiated by the VCU Career Center and distributed by the provost to university …

Placing Children In Need With Gay & Lesbian Couples: Influences On Placement Decisions, Gayle Mallinger Jan 2010

Placing Children In Need With Gay & Lesbian Couples: Influences On Placement Decisions, Gayle Mallinger

Social Work Faculty Publications

Thousands of children throughout the United States are currently awaiting placement with adoptive families. The literature indicates that gay- and lesbian-headed households can well meet the needs of these children. Research suggests that sexual prejudice, religious fundamentalism and attitudes about gay and lesbian adoption may influence practice decisions regarding placement. This dissertation study examined the influences of religious fundamentalism, sexual prejudice, contact with sexually diverse individuals, and attitudes towards gay men and lesbians as adoptive parents on intent to place children in need with gay and lesbian couples. A random sample of National Association of Social Workers (NASW) members was …

Posters Protesting Drug Violence In Juárez, México, Anne Giangiulio

I designed the posters 'Juárez: Once a City, Now Statistics' and 'Stop the Violence in Juárez' originally for 'Peace of Art: Design for Change' (www.peaceofartshow.org). This exhibit presents posters of social protest designed by professional and student designers to create awareness of the situation of violence in Cd, Juarez. To give a face to the violence and help people understand that the violence changes people’s lives. It is a display of Peace and/or protest on both sides of the border. More importantly, Peace of Art raises funds that will aid Cd. Juarez victims and their families. Both posters were later …

Translation Recognition In Learners Of Arabic, Alia K. Biller Jan 2010

Translation Recognition In Learners Of Arabic, Alia K. Biller

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The current study explored the role of phonology in the processing of Arabic words in native English speakers learning Arabic. Previous research demonstrates that three factors play a role in the mental processing of multiple languages: orthography, phonology, and semantics. Cognate studies have revealed that orthography is not the most important factor, but the roles of phonology and semantics are still indistinguishable from one another. The current study utilized phonologically-embedded English words within Arabic words at three different points in the word, beginning, middle, and end, to determine the role of phonology separate from that of semantics (e.g., [written Arabic] …

Religious Pluralism And The Turn To The Spirit: Fabc’S And Gavin D’Costa’S Theology Of Religions, Ruben C. Mendoza Jan 2010

Religious Pluralism And The Turn To The Spirit: Fabc’S And Gavin D’Costa’S Theology Of Religions, Ruben C. Mendoza

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Among the recent approaches to religious pluralism is what has been called “the turn to the Holy Spirit.”1 Theologians who employ the pneumatological approach regard it as a way out of the traditional impasses that have hindered developments in the theology of religions.2 For instance, the Pentecostal theologian Amos Yong identifies three advantages of a pneumatological approach to other religions.3 First, he considers pneumatology as the key to overcoming the dualism between Christological particularity and the cosmic Christ. The either/or of particularity/universality dissolves when one recalls that the historical Jesus was who he was because of the Spirit of God …
