A Hybrid Genre Supports Hybrid Roles In Community-University Collaboration, Timothy Henningsen Jan 2010

A Hybrid Genre Supports Hybrid Roles In Community-University Collaboration, Timothy Henningsen

English Faculty Scholarship

This chapter describes how community-university collaboration is created

by the Chicago Civic Leadership Certificate Program (CCLCP), an

undergraduate program offered at the University of Illinois at Chicago

(UIC). In CCLCP, partners from community-based, not-for-profit organizations

mentor first- and second-year students who complete writing and

research projects that their partner organizations need. In effect, then,

CCLCP’s community partners function as co-teachers, collaborating with

university instructors to direct, monitor, and evaluate student work; this

teaching relationship builds on a deeper and more interesting collaboration:

the bilateral development of students’ community-based projects.

Worlds Apart In The Curriculum: Heidegger, Technology, And The Poietic Attunement Of Art, James Magrini Jan 2010

Worlds Apart In The Curriculum: Heidegger, Technology, And The Poietic Attunement Of Art, James Magrini

Philosophy Scholarship

Margonis (1986) criticizes Heidegger’s philosophy and those who would attempt to adopt his views for the purpose of thinking education because of the "abstract nature of his discussions," which suggest "proposals regarding our political, economic and educational lives from the place of metaphysical argumentation" (p. 125). To the contrary, Dwyer, et al (1988) claim the Heidegger’s philosophy, "clearly suggests an educational theory" (p. 100). This, is perhaps an overly optimistic claim, for it glosses over the difficulty associated with plumbing the depths of Heidegger’s vast corpus in order to speculate on the legitimate potential his philosophy has for contemporary educational …

Do You See What I Mean? Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis., Noel Fitzpatrick, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2010

Do You See What I Mean? Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis., Noel Fitzpatrick, Roisin Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter explores a sociolinguistic approach to computer-mediated communication (CMC), by examining how higher education teachers use digital media to manage interpersonal interaction in their online courses, form impressions, shape and maintain relationships with their students. Previous studies have often focused on the differences between online and offline interactions, though contemporary research is moving towards the view that CMC should be studied as an embedded linguistic form in everyday life. The study of language in these contexts is typically based on text-based forms of CMC, (often referred to as computer-mediated discourse analysis). Within this, focus in the chapter is on …

Trojan Women And Devil Baby Tales: Jane Addams On Domestic Violence, Marilyn Fischer Jan 2010

Trojan Women And Devil Baby Tales: Jane Addams On Domestic Violence, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this discussion I will show how Addams used these bodies of knowledge in shaping a pragmatist-feminist analysis of the devil baby tales and of domestic violence. Pragmatists begin with people's concrete experience within specific, lived contexts and then return to experience to test their theories and concepts. Feminist pragmatists such as Addams give women's experiences central place. In her analysis of the devil baby tales and domestic violence, Addams presents the most marginalized women, not merely as victims, but as agents and artists in their own right.

Collective As Form, Playground As Medium, Tim Stott Jan 2010

Collective As Form, Playground As Medium, Tim Stott

Conference Papers

Playgrounds offer a medium for forms of collective organisation. To a greater or lesser degree withdrawn from consequence, playgrounds might loosen otherwise binding collective forms, and provide both models of and models for present and future collectivities. But when play is becoming pervasive and dispersed throughout contemporary post-industrial societies, no longer knowing its time or place, by what means such modelling of collectivities might be observed and played out? The task of this paper is to examine how some contemporary participatory art works might provide such a means. Not because with such works we play more or play better, but …

The presidency of Jose Luis Zapatero Rodriguez has seen significant legisla tion in Spain that includes the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2005 and La ley de la memoria historica in 2007.1 Upon consideration of the changes in Spain during the first decade of the twenty-first century, we as critics must pause to consider how literature and film respond to the topics of homosexuality and history. Since the death of Franco in 1975, writers and directors have created a significant body of films and literature that uncovers previously prohibited topics in order to make, "the once hidden visible" (Creekmur …

Neoplatonism In The Risala (De Intellectu) Of Alfarabi, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

The Neoplatonism of Plotinus and Proclus played an important role in the development of the Aristotelian concepts of intellect and perception in the Arabic commentators on Aristotle. Plotinus was not known to Arab scholars by name, but books Four to Six of the Enneads from the third century, as compiled by Porphyry, were paraphrased in the text called the Theology of Aristotle, which was translated between 833 and 842 by the circle of al-Kindi in Baghdad. The translation combined Aristole, Plotinus, and Christian and Islamic doctrines, and had a significant effect on early Islamic philosophy. The al-Kindi circle also …

Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. c. 198–209) was born somewhere around 150, in Aphrodisia on the Aegean Sea. He began his career in Alexandria during the reign of Septimius Severus, was appointed to the peripatetic chair at the Lyceum in Athens in 198, a post established by Marcus Aurelius, wrote a commentary on the De anima of Aristotle, and died in 211. According to Porphyry, Alexander was an authority read in the seminars of Plotinus in Rome. He is the earliest philosopher who saw the active intellect implied in Book III of the De anima of Aristotle as transcendent in relation …

Philosophy Of Intellect And Vision In The De Anima Of Themistius, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Themistius (317–c. 387) was born into an aristocratic family and ran a paripatetic school of philosophy in Constantinople in the mid-fourth century, between 345 and 355. He made use of Alexander’s De anima in his commentary on the De anima of Aristotle, which is considered to be the earliest surviving commentary on Aristotle’s work, as Alexander’s commentary itself did not survive. Themistius may also have been influenced by Plotinus, and Porphyry (232–309), whom he criticizes. Themistius refers often to works of Plato, especially the Timaeus, and attempts a synthesis of Aristotle and Plato, a synthesis which was continued in …

Planck Versus Poe: Scientific And Poetic Approaches, Anita Kelkar

P A M Dirac wrote that "In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by every- one, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it’s the exact opposite." Dirac's quote con- fronts us with the question: Do both the scientific and poetic approaches ultimately enjoy equal success in expanding human knowledge?

Cancer Education And Awareness Program: Education And Its Role In The Prevention Of Cancer, Sukhpreet Singh

Quill & Scope

As U.S. healthcare accelerates into an era of science fiction, we find that most diseases are treatable via technological intervention. This has, unfortunately, reduced the role of the physician as the patient’s teacher and advocate in the clinical setting. The Cancer Education and Awareness Program attempts to tackle one of the worst diagnoses a patient can receive, and dispel the misconceptions the general popu- lation has about the prevention of disease. We do this by reaching out to high school students in the local community, and through the method of storytelling, we teach them the science behind the disease. This …

The Glass Ceiling Women Face: An Examination And Proposals For Development Of Future Women Entrepreneurs, Janet Nixdorff, Theodore H. Rosen

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

As of 2007, there were an estimated 10.4 million businesses in the United States that were owned and operated by women. The number of women-owned firms has continued to grow at around twice the rate of all firms for the past two decades (Center for Women’s Business Research, 2008). On the other hand, women comprise only 15.4 percent of corporate officers in Fortune 500 companies (Catalyst, 2007b) and, in 2003, held only 14.8 percent of board seats in the Fortune 500 (Catalyst, 2007a).To better understand the glass ceiling faced by both female entrepreneurs and women leaders, the research on women’s …

Forum Theatre Empowering Students To Speak, Act, And Know, Kaitlen M. Osburn Jan 2010

Forum Theatre Empowering Students To Speak, Act, And Know, Kaitlen M. Osburn

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

During the political turmoil of 1960s Brazil, theatre artist Augusto Boal created a new form of theatre to fight back against the oppressive government. Theatre of the Oppressed has now spread to almost every country in the world and has empowered many spect-actors (Boal‘s term for audience-turned-actors) to resist oppression. Boal‘s seminal text Theatre of the Oppressed opened the door to future expansions of Theatre of the Oppressed that combine drama therapy and politics with an already powerful arsenal of techniques. Combining this innovative methodology with education, I facilitated two Forum Theatre workshops at Warren Central High School and Warren …

Acquisition And Solidifcation Of Grammar And Vocabulary In Elementary French Classrooms Through Skit Performance, Jill Owen Jan 2010

Acquisition And Solidifcation Of Grammar And Vocabulary In Elementary French Classrooms Through Skit Performance, Jill Owen

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In this study, groups of elementary French students in two classes at Western Kentucky University utilized two different methods of skit performance to demonstrate the importance of communicative activities in the foreign language classroom. The effectiveness of each method was assessed to determine which method helped the students acquire grammar and vocabulary concepts more readily. One method was to have students write their own skits using a chapter in their textbook. The other method was to give students an outline that they filled in and memorized. Surveys and quizzes were used to gather data. The results of which method proved …

Rescripting Stalinist Masculinity: Contesting The Male Ideal In Soviet Film And Society, 1953-1968, Marko Dumančić

History Faculty Publications

This dissertation traces the evolution of a new type of cinematic masculinity in the fifteen years following Joseph Stalin’s death and examines how controversial post-Stalinist movie heroes became a battleground for the country’s postwar values and ideals. During the 1950s and 1960s, postwar Soviet leadership faced the kinds of sociopolitical ruptures that were also evident on the other side of the Iron Curtain; the Communist Party leadership struggled to moderate the combined destabilizing effect of consumerism, a recalcitrant youth (sub)culture, and Cold War anxieties. Nowhere was the angst of the postwar period more obvious than in the way Soviet filmmakers …
