Tupac Shakur And The Search For The Lost Tribe, Christopher Jacob Marcos Jan 2010

Tupac Shakur And The Search For The Lost Tribe, Christopher Jacob Marcos

Theses Digitization Project

Interviews are analyzed by the author in reference to the music and the poetry of Tupac Shakur in a way that will work to create a space within Hip Hop culture that does not focus on race, class, or region as the basis for inclusion and genuine participation in the culture. In Tupac Shakur's last interview, he calls for a new political party and alludes to the lost tribe metaphor to describe the diversity of backgrounds that he wanted to include. The lost tribe works to include rather than exclude participants of Hip Hop culture. This thesis is an attempt …

A Study Of Democracy In Africa: The Senegalese Experience, Ryan Robert Riley Jan 2010

A Study Of Democracy In Africa: The Senegalese Experience, Ryan Robert Riley

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis examines the development of democracy in Senegal, one of the few democracies in Africa. In order to understand why democracy has been such a challenge to establish and maintain in Africa, it is necessary to account for the broad effects of European colonization. European powers in their attempts to "modernize" the people of Africa disrupted their natural cultural progress.

The House In The Market: How Q’Eqchi’ Market Women Convert Money And Commodities Into Persons And Personhood, Sarah Ashley Kistler Jan 2010

The House In The Market: How Q’Eqchi’ Market Women Convert Money And Commodities Into Persons And Personhood, Sarah Ashley Kistler

Faculty Publications

Recent research argues that globalization in Latin America sometimes results in the homogenization of culture and loss of indigenous identity. This paper, however, explores how Q’eqchi’-Maya market women in San Juan Chamelco, Guatemala, generate Q’eqchi’ personhood by embracing the conflicts of value introduced by the confrontation of globalization with longstanding Q’eqchi’ values. I argue that in Chamelco, market women are mediators of value who participate in global capitalism to reinforce the categories that structure indigenous life. Q’eqchi’ women engage in marketing activities not only to accrue capital resources, but also to maintain local values, centered on the junkab’al or “house,” …

Minority Report, Tan Jazz Mont Jan 2010

Minority Report, Tan Jazz Mont

CGU MFA Theses

I make large, colorful, messy figurative paintings that tell stories and celebrate the underdog. I use found objects, as well as wood panels and canvases. The poetry of the street plays an important role in my art; from what I paint on, to what I paint with, to my subject matter, my art conveys both liberation and pride toward my Hispanic culture. When I create, I allow the paint to be true to its physical properties. I am aggressive and free in my painting and mark-making. If my paintings begin to appear “sophisticated,” I find ways to manipulate them. I …

Neither A Wife Nor A Whore: Deconstructing Feminine Icons In Catherine Breillat's Une Vieille Maîtresse, Douglas Keesey Jan 2010

Neither A Wife Nor A Whore: Deconstructing Feminine Icons In Catherine Breillat's Une Vieille Maîtresse, Douglas Keesey

English

This article undertakes a close reading of Catherine Breillat’s recent film Une vieille maîtresse (2007) to show why this, her first heritage film, is nevertheless strongly relevant to the gender politics of today. The author argues that Breillat’s cinematic deconstruction of differences between women is designed to undo the polarising effect of patriarchal representations of women as madonnas or whores — media images still prevalent even in these days of mixité and parité. Despite a tendency on the part of some reviewers to take the film’s gender images at face value, the author argues that Breillat’s interest lies not …

Understanding Genre Through The Lens Of Advocacy: The Rhetorical Work Of The Victim Impact Statement, Amy D. Propen, Mary Lay Schuster Jan 2010

Understanding Genre Through The Lens Of Advocacy: The Rhetorical Work Of The Victim Impact Statement, Amy D. Propen, Mary Lay Schuster

English

Through interviews with judges and victim advocates, courtroom observations, and rhetorical analyses of victims’ reactions to proposed sentences, the authors examine the features that judges and advocates think make victims’ arguments persuasive. The authors conclude that this genre, recently imposed upon the court, functions as a mediating device through which advocates push for collective change, particularly for judicial acceptance of personal and emotional appeals. This study understands genres as responsive to changes within the activity systems in which they work and extends knowledge about genres that function as advocacy tools within internal institutional systems.

Shaping Shakespeare, Reflecting History: Adaptations Of Othello For Children In 1990s Britain, Karley Adney Jan 2010

Shaping Shakespeare, Reflecting History: Adaptations Of Othello For Children In 1990s Britain, Karley Adney

Scholarship and Professional Work of the Provost's Staff

In this article, two 1990s British adaptations of Shakespeare's Othello for children are studied with the primary critical lens of New Historicism. This analysis concerns itself with the cultural resonances adaptors pass to their readers and how those traces shape the Shakespearean texts they adapt. This study contends that cultural contexts, transactions, and negotiations of the time incontestably shape these adaptations. To truly appreciate the choices made by the adaptors of the 1990s, reflections on Britain in the 1980s serve as points of comparison. As a result, analyzing and accounting for the cultural influences provides a whole reading of the …

Mechanisms (Oxford), Stuart Glennan Jan 2010

Mechanisms (Oxford), Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Mechanism is undoubtedly a causal concept, in the sense that ordinary definitions and philosophical analyses explicate the concept in terms of other causal concepts such as production and interaction. Given this fact, many philosophers have supposed that analyses of the concept of mechanism, while they might appeal to philosophical theories about the nature of causation, could do little to inform such theories. On the other hand, methods of causal inference and explanation appeal to mechanisms. Discovering a mechanism is the gold standard for establishing and explaining causal connections. This fact suggests that it might be possible to provide an analysis …

On Earth As It Is

ConAgra, bread-keeper; save us from our misery.
The stores dried up, people float in and out as if in a dream, wandering empty aisles and pushing imagined carts, checking out their bounty, self-scanning.
May you please render us saved.
And the farmers in Portland and Studio City and Brooklyn, with their small hands and meager yields, their rooftop stalks, they have been taken and put up in cages.
Make them free.

In Front Of The Black Sea, Matthew Batt Jan 2010

In Front Of The Black Sea, Matthew Batt

On Earth As It Is

Dear God,

Ali and Sema have a daughter!

It’s raining in St. Paul but

there was a spot right in front

of the Black Sea and I wasn’t going

to go—it was already almost three

and I thought I could just plow through

till dinner but then I saw the sign—

the sign! in the window! Ali and Sema

have a daughter!

How To Become A Prayer, Giancarlo Ditrapano Jan 2010

How To Become A Prayer, Giancarlo Ditrapano

On Earth As It Is

Attention is the very essence of prayer. I am the bread of only my life. I look at prayers on the page. I read them and I lay my voice on top of the prayers. I drape them with my voice and make them mine. I put on my jacket and go out into the night to meet other prayers. I was nine when the Lord wasn’t watching over my family as I had prayed he would for all of those nights. The fuck, he smashed my brother’s car into a utility pole on a south Florida interstate, killing him …

Dear God, Kirsty Logan

On Earth As It Is

I call you god but you know I don't believe. I never have. well, maybe I did once, for a few months, when I was nine. remember that little book of bible stories, the one with the mustard-yellow cover and shiny red letters? of course you know. you know everything. or you would, if I believed.

A Prayer For Lack Of You, Kyle Minor Jan 2010

A Prayer For Lack Of You, Kyle Minor

On Earth As It Is

When I was a child I feared all the Old Testament curses—dogs, frogs, being struck down by forked lightning? Which were Old Testament curses and which were the talk of the traveling preachers in their white suits and black slickback hair? Either way, it doesn't matter. One was You and the other was You. You let anyone who wants to speak for You speak for You, so what is left for the children of the world to do but see You in the ones who speak for You? If You are You, shame on You, for sparing those who speak …

On Earth As It Is

Maynard Prine of Reynold's Creek, West Virginia was fierce in his faith, an obedient servant of You, Lord, Your miracles, Your Mysterious Ways. It was Your mandate that my father take up the serpent, that he handle the flame. This man was not afraid.

Prayer For Amniocentesis, David Mcglynn Jan 2010

Prayer For Amniocentesis, David Mcglynn

On Earth As It Is

We have been debating names for weeks, but now we choose one, Hayden, aware it’s a name we might have to bury. I sit on the edge of the bed and think about the vial of amniotic fluid—Katherine’s water—traveling by van to the lab in Milwaukee. I think of its soft amber color, its protective viscosity, its blizzard of DNA, the helix of Hayden’s existence a braid of Katherine’s alleles and mine.

A Statement From The Defense, Erin Mcgraw Jan 2010

A Statement From The Defense, Erin Mcgraw

On Earth As It Is

Because you promised to be with me even to the end of time. Because you told me to be still and know who you are. Because it was said you would lead me through the shadow of the valley of death and take away my fear, but I still have my fear. Because you promised me repose.

Prayer, Adam Robinson Jan 2010

Prayer, Adam Robinson

On Earth As It Is

God,

nothing inspires fear in me like swallowing an apple seed. What if there are worms in the fruit that rises up from my belly? Worms freak me out.

But you know I love trees, God. Your creation is really magnificent.
