Testimony Of Trauma: Ernest Hemingway’S Narrative Progression In Across The River And Into The Trees, Kathleen K. Robinson Mar 2010

Testimony Of Trauma: Ernest Hemingway’S Narrative Progression In Across The River And Into The Trees, Kathleen K. Robinson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Specifically, the study of the progression focuses on examining Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees for evidence of traumas' effects on Hemingway's development of narrative structure. Throughout his career, Hemingway pinpoints the importance of witnessing and experiencing war on a writer. I endeavor to demonstrate-in detail, achieved by close reading, and with solid evidence-how the imbrication of trauma in Across the River and into the Trees represents a vital moment in Hemingway's progression as a writer. My assertion, a new calculus of subjectivity and objectivity appearing in the narrative structure via the protagonist, viably counters previous critical dismissal …

Metal-Organic Materials: From Design Principles To Practical Applications, Mohamed H. Alkordi Mar 2010

Metal-Organic Materials: From Design Principles To Practical Applications, Mohamed H. Alkordi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The works presented herein outline rational design approaches towards construction of solid state materials with great potentials to answer some of current demanding applications. Specifically, the materials targeted are metal−organic materials with desirable structural features and functional properties. Metal−organic materials are constructed from organic linker molecules and metal ions under relatively mild solvothermal reaction conditions that preserve the structural features of the relatively simple building blocks. Therefore, it is feasible to conceive a retrospective pathway of the reaction and thus deconstruct the desirable structures into simple, chemicallyrelevant, building blocks in an approach known as the molecular building block approach. Due …

John Kennedy Toole's Papers: A Cautionary Tale Of Scholarly Research., H. Vernon Leighton

Library Faculty Works

This document is the script from a Winona State University Library Athenaeum presentation by H. Vernon Leighton. The lecture was presented on March 17, 2010. In the Summer of 2009, Leighton visited Tulane University and studied the papers of John Kennedy Toole, the author of A Confederacy of Dunces. At the time of this lecture, he was working on an academic paper on this topic. The papers, about which no scholar has published a description at that time, established that at least two claims made in the scholarly literature on Toole were incorrect. The 16 December 2025 version of this …

Igolf: Contemporary Sculptures Exhibition 2009, King Lun Kisslan Chan Mar 2010

Igolf: Contemporary Sculptures Exhibition 2009, King Lun Kisslan Chan

Theses and Dissertations

Why "igolf"? I love golfing, especially enjoying the gigantic space of the golf course. More importantly, this is the place where I dream and get inspiration for my art. I imagine filling my own global golf course with monumental golf sculptures in the future. This motivation and enthusiasm has modified my direction in creating sculpture. I named my final MFA exhibition "igolf". The idea of the name comes from modern terms we find in popular devices, such as the iPhone, iPod, and the iMac that reflect our technological world. In addition, the sound for "i" shares the same sound of …

Violence Across The Land: Vigilantism And Extralegal Justice In The Utah Territory, Scott K. Thomas Mar 2010

Violence Across The Land: Vigilantism And Extralegal Justice In The Utah Territory, Scott K. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

For years historians of the American West have overlooked Utah when dealing with the subject of extrajudicial violence, while researchers of Mormonism have misread the existence of such violence in territorial Utah. The former asserts that Utah was free from extrajudicial proceedings and that such violence was nearly nonexistent within the contours of the Mormon kingdom. The latter maintains that any violence that existed in Utah was directly connected to the religious fanaticism of the Mormon populace in the region. The reality is that much of the extralegal violence in Utah was a result of the frontier, not the religion …

Ghouls, Hell And Transcendence: The Zombie In Popular Culture From "Night Of The Living Dead" To "Shaun Of The Dead", Jasie Stokes

Theses and Dissertations

Considering the amount of media created around the zombie and the sustained interest in its role in our society, we can clearly see that a cultural phenomenon is underway, and it is important for us to question this phenomenon in order to gain some understanding of how and why its appeal has stretched so far. The zombie is somehow enthralling, and it is my opinion that this is in part because the zombie is a study of what it means to be human in the postmodern world. My main purpose here is not to ask why zombies are popular or …

Under Glass: The Girl With A Thousand Christmas Trees, Jen Hirt Mar 2010

Under Glass: The Girl With A Thousand Christmas Trees, Jen Hirt

University of Akron Press Publications

According to Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, when she went back to Ohio, her city was gone. For Jen Hirt, her Strongsville, Ohio greenhouses were gone. Her ancestry, bloodlines, memories, and her complete identity were replaced by a large-chain pharmacy store. Four generations taken away by the wrecking ball; fourteen greenhouses dismantled and shattered. Under Glass traces the rise and fall of the family business and the family itself.

Hirt is the girl with a thousand Christmas trees, growing up surrounded by life and vitality. She is the greenhouse filled with hope and growth. Then the rubble sets in—financial pressures, …
