A History Of The American Film Institute, Deborah Jae Alexander May 2010

A History Of The American Film Institute, Deborah Jae Alexander

Dissertations

The American Film Institute (AFI) is a highly politicized, powerful organization. To date, most historical documentation and recording of AFI events and activities has been disseminated to the mass media from within the organization through its own publications or in other historical documentation as incidental history in relation to another topic. This dissertation, written as an overview, is the first comprehensive, independent historical examination of the AFI. The examination begins with an exploration of the development, activities and decline of the American Council on Education‟s original AFI and other film organizations that existed prior to the present day AFI. It …

Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood May 2010

Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood

Dissertations

Cryptid is a term from the field of cryptozoology, which ostensibly presents itself as the study of creatures that may or may not exist, such as – but not limited to – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Jersey Devil. The term itself, cryptid, refers to one of these unknown creatures. The novella presented here concerns a half-Native American man and his struggle to know not only his dead parents, but himself and his place in the world. While cryptids play a minor role within the boundaries of the narrative itself, the novella concerns itself more with the ways …

Throughout his I ife, Frederick Douglass struggled to be something extraordinary. He rose from a life in slavery to become the most prominent African-American of his day and a leading figure in the abolitionist movement. Black And White On Black: Whiteness And Masculinity In The Works Of Three Australian Writers - Thomas Keneally, Colin Thiele, And Patrick White., Matthew Israel Byrge May 2010

Black And White On Black: Whiteness And Masculinity In The Works Of Three Australian Writers - Thomas Keneally, Colin Thiele, And Patrick White., Matthew Israel Byrge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

White depictions of Aborigines in literature have generally been culturally biased. In this study I explore four depictions of Indigenous Australians by white Australian writers. Thomas Keneally's The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1972) depicts a half-caste Aborigine's attempt to enter white society in a racially-antipathetic world that precipitates his ruin. Children's author Colin Thiele develops friendships between white and Aboriginal children in frightening and dangerous landscapes in both Storm Boy (1963) and Fire in the Stone (1973). Nobel laureate Patrick White sets A Fringe of Leaves (1976) in a world in which Ellen Roxburgh's quest for freedom comes only through …

Now Was Then, Then Is Now: The Paradoxical World Of Fahrenheit 451, Michael R. Labrie May 2010

Now Was Then, Then Is Now: The Paradoxical World Of Fahrenheit 451, Michael R. Labrie

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

In the following essay, through the analysis and interpretation of Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, I will create a juxtaposition of the world that we live in today and compare it to the eerily similar version known as Elm City, in which Bradbury creates a dark representation of 21st century America. This essay will carefully analyze and interpret themes, symbols, and futuristic inventions in which Bradbury claims he was, “Trying to prevent futures,” as well as bring everyday uses and patterns of today’s society to light, revealing the prescient and prophetic text in which the novel encompasses

Questioning Objectivity In Mainstream Broadcast Journalism: The Value Of Subjectivity On "The View", Monika K. Raczkowski May 2010

Questioning Objectivity In Mainstream Broadcast Journalism: The Value Of Subjectivity On "The View", Monika K. Raczkowski

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

The View on ABC has varying reputations. Although it has received Emmys and is critically acclaimed, many viewers discredit the discussions on the show because of the strong personalities and dissenting opinions. By looking at episodes of The View between 2009 and 2010—particularly surrounding Rihanna’s altercations with Chris Brown and her GQ photo shoot—the co-hosts provide varying opinions and interpretations that become useful to viewers who are developing their own views about the subject. Furthermore, the useful discussions on The View validate the subjective news model as a whole because unlike objectivity, subjectivity provides the opportunity for co-hosts and viewers …

"Lord Of The Flies": The Educational Value Of Golding's Text, Erin M. Frank May 2010

"Lord Of The Flies": The Educational Value Of Golding's Text, Erin M. Frank

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

This paper takes a careful look at the content of Lord of the Flies often questioned by censorship advocates. Next, an exploration of the import behind William Golding’s symbolic objects and characters reveals the specifics of the literary and human value of the novel. Finally, insight from case studies helps further demonstrate the appropriateness and effectiveness of the novel in high school English curriculums while also revealing student responses in regard to Golding’s work and the worldly issues informed by it.

Meaningful Meaninglessness: Albert Camus' Presentation Of Absurdism As A Foundation For Goodness, Maria K. Genovese May 2010

Meaningful Meaninglessness: Albert Camus' Presentation Of Absurdism As A Foundation For Goodness, Maria K. Genovese

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

In 1957, Albert Camus won the Nobel Prize for Literature. By that time he had written such magnificently important works such as Caligula (1938), The Stranger (1942), The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), The Plague (1947), The Rebel (1951), and The Fall (1956). Camus was a proponent of Absurdism, a philosophy that realizes the workings of the world are inherently meaningless and indifferent to the human struggle to create meaning. Absurdism, however, is not a nihilistic philosophy. In The Myth of Sisyphus, The Rebel, and Caligula, Camus offers a foundation of optimism and morality.

Leading Ladies?: Feminism And The Hollywood New Wave, Allison A. Smith May 2010

Leading Ladies?: Feminism And The Hollywood New Wave, Allison A. Smith

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

In the late 1960s, a new film movement emerged in Hollywood cinema known as the Hollywood New Wave. The women’s movement began roughly the same time as the Hollywood New Wave, but feminism was rarely a topic discussed in Hollywood cinema. The Hollywood New Wave is often considered a “boy’s club,” in the sense that most of the filmmakers, actors and other crewmembers were male and writing stories about male experiences. Women did have a part in these films in a limited way, yet there are some examples of strong female characters in select films.

From "Stalinkas" To "Khrushchevkas": The Transition To Minimalism In Urban Residential Interiors In The Soviet Union From 1953 To 1964, Ksenia Choate

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the shift from the rule of Joseph Stalin to that of Nikita Khrushchev, people in the Soviet Union witnessed dramatic political, economic, and social changes, evident even in such private aspects of life as residential home interiors.

The major architectural style of Stalin's era, known as Stalin's Empire Style, was characterized by grandeur and rich embellishments. The buildings' interiors were similarly grandiose and ornate. By endorsing this kind of design, Stalin attempted to position himself as an heir of classical traditions, to encourage respect for his regime, and to signal his power. When Nikita Khrushchev became the country's leader …

With His Guitar In His Hand: Representations Of U.S. - Mexico Border Masculinity In Robert Rodriguez's “El Mariachi”, Marlene Galvan May 2010

With His Guitar In His Hand: Representations Of U.S. - Mexico Border Masculinity In Robert Rodriguez's “El Mariachi”, Marlene Galvan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis closely examines Robert Rodriguez’s film El Mariachi and its portrayal of border masculinity - the masculine identity which exists on the physical space between the U.S. and Mexico, but also the masculinity created by the melding of cultures. The film ignores this complexity and instead dichotomizes maleness along the traditionally Western lines of hard versus soft masculinity. Further, the film glorifies violence, the exploitation of female bodies, shows women as only useful agents of man, punishes transgressive women, and depicts men as only possessing or aspiring to possess individualistic, economic, phallocentric, and patriarchal power which reinforces a variation …

Review Of Women Letter-Writers In Tudor England, Gary Schneider May 2010

Review Of Women Letter-Writers In Tudor England, Gary Schneider

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

In 1684 Jean de La Bruye`re wrote that women letter writers ‘‘find at the tip of their pens expressions and turns of phrase that often, in men, are the result of long searching. . . . they have an inimitable way of putting words together that seems to come naturally.’’1 Are letters by women indeed more natural, more effortless, and more emotionally attuned than men’s? By contrast, others throughout literary history have demonstrated a ‘‘long-term prejudice against women’s letters’’ as ‘‘of no importance’’ (8), author James Daybell writes, and in doing so he illustrates the other extreme to which women’s …

The Catastrophic Position Of The Judenräte: Self-Serving Collaborators Or Honorable Martyrs?, Meghan Kerry Waldow May 2010

The Catastrophic Position Of The Judenräte: Self-Serving Collaborators Or Honorable Martyrs?, Meghan Kerry Waldow

Master's Theses

During the Holocaust, the Nazis appointed a select group of Jewish leaders to carry out their demands and orders throughout the ghettos of Eastern Europe. These influential men made up the Judenrate. From the beginning of the ghettos until their tragic demise, these Jewish leaders were responsible for executing difficult, and at times immoral, orders from the Nazis. With little time, money, and resources, somehow these Jews were to establish a system of government within the small boundaries of their quarantine. Put in an unfathomable position, these specially chosen men received power and influence during a time that removed both …

Classifications And Designations Of Metric Modulation In The Music Of Elliott Carter, Jason Adam Hobert May 2010

Classifications And Designations Of Metric Modulation In The Music Of Elliott Carter, Jason Adam Hobert

Master's Theses

Since the first use of metric modulation in 1948, this technique has become a staple in Elliott Carter's rhythmic language and compositional process, being found in most of his compositions thereafter. Though most scholars share a general understanding of metric modulation, the different processes that achieve it and its functions are not documented. This thesis will compare and contrast some definitions of metric modulation, formulate a new definition, identify four different types of metric modulation, and explore four ways in which a metric modulation may function in a composition. At the end of said thesis, the usefulness of these types …

“Wait For Me”: Appreciating The Curious Juxtaposition Of Zephaniah 3:8 And 9, Bob Caldwell May 2010

“Wait For Me”: Appreciating The Curious Juxtaposition Of Zephaniah 3:8 And 9, Bob Caldwell

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

When I started doctoral work, I had no intention of doing anything in the Latter Prophets. Perhaps it is my earlier accounting training, but wrestling with the details of the historical books and mining them for theological insights has always had my interest. The Latter Prophets involved the difficulties of understanding Hebrew poetry, searching for referents, and trying to make sense of a message that was delivered in a context to which I am barely connected. Unfortunately, one day I found myself without a dissertation topic (a previous topic idea proved to be unworkable). In the mercies of God, Dr. …

The History Of Baccarat, Theodore Whiting May 2010

The History Of Baccarat, Theodore Whiting

Occasional Papers

The true origins of modern Baccarat are probably lost to history. The first time the game Baccarat (spelled Baccara) was mentioned in print by a contemporary observer was in the early 19th century. The written record that would document the origins and evolution of the game is, unfortunately, incomplete. However, a close examination of the available material reveals some interesting facts surrounding the history of Baccarat, including a much earlier date for its arrival in the United States, that validates its continuing study.

A Study Of The Conflicts Within Churches That Lead To The Termination Of Pastors Within The Southern Baptist Convention, Accompanied By A Proposal Of Preventive And Interventional Solutions, Donald Quentin Hicks

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Since 1984, LifeWay of the Southern Baptist Convention has collected data through the Pastoral Ministries division of LifeWay from state conventions to determine how many pastors were being fired each year from their churches. They discovered that approximately two hundred pastors were being fired from their churches each month. Leader Care was formed in 1996 in order to find solutions to this problem. Throughout the last decade some progress has been made educating and helping churches and ministers in conflict, as well as ministers and their families who were terminated from the churches they served. In 2008, LifeWay disbanded LeaderCare, …

An Analysis Of The Evangelistic Impact Of The Baptist Bible Fellowship International, Billy Hamm May 2010

An Analysis Of The Evangelistic Impact Of The Baptist Bible Fellowship International, Billy Hamm

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A review of current literature demonstrates that very little material is available to describe the mission and effectiveness of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International. Research reflects that for the last half of the 20th Century, BBFI was a formidable movement among Fundamentalists in its independent Baptist doctrinal position and its evangelistic zeal. It was also determined that the BBFI has struggled to maintain its growth patterns and should reassess its original purpose and identity though it still appears to be the largest expression of Fundamentalism in America. Both historical and empirical research methods are used.
