The Memory Of Persistence, Scott Pfitzinger May 2010

The Memory Of Persistence, Scott Pfitzinger

Graduate Thesis Collection

This composition for Wind Ensemble (like Concert Band but usually only one player on a part) was Scott Master's Thesis for completing a Master of Music degree in Composition at Butler University. Written in 2010, the piece is a combination of styles, philosophies, and techniques, all in balance with each other. Avant-garde and traditional techniques are used; tonality and atonality vie with each other, resulting in a combination of the two; specific musical directions are balanced by a degree of choice available to each participant.

“The Memory of Persistence” is about a journey. No specific personal story is presented, nor …

"By Any Means Necessary": The Lincoln, Nebraska, Ywca Confronts Racism, 1970–1984, Brianna Jo Theobald May 2010

"By Any Means Necessary": The Lincoln, Nebraska, Ywca Confronts Racism, 1970–1984, Brianna Jo Theobald

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis documents the struggle of the Lincoln, Nebraska Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to implement a national organizational policy that mandated an aggressive stand toward the elimination of racism within the organization and the larger community. The study reveals the limitations of the colorblind discourse espoused by YWCA women in the early 1970s and examines some key changes that were made in the following decade that allowed the Lincoln organization to join cause with national movements in the fight to eliminate racism. Thus, the study offers an analysis of efforts to undertake antiracist action in a predominantly white environment. …

Don Delillo And 9/11: A Question Of Response, Michael Jamieson May 2010

Don Delillo And 9/11: A Question Of Response, Michael Jamieson

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the wake of the attacks of September 11th, many artists struggled with how to respond to the horror. In literature, Don DeLillo was one of the first authors to pose a significant, fictionalized investigation of the day. In this thesis, Michael Jamieson argues that DeLillo’s post-9/11 work constitutes a new form of response to the tragedy. Drawing on the work of Marco Abel and his conception of maso-criticism, Jamieson argues that DeLillo works intensively into the attacks themselves as a way to avoid grand narratives that place them within a conventional story (the War on Terror, Islamic fundamentalism). His …

"If A Passage Could Be Found": The Power Of Myth (And Money) In North American Exploration, Brenden Rensink May 2010

"If A Passage Could Be Found": The Power Of Myth (And Money) In North American Exploration, Brenden Rensink

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The popular lore of North American exploration and westward expansion has oft been woven with themes of heroic bravery, divine providence and Manifest Destiny. These tales indeed relate portions of actual history, but also offer insight into the self-perception and culture of the societies perpetuating them. As larger-than-life figures braved the "unknown" in the name of nation or creed, the motives behind their ventures often were not so singular. The ever-driving force of economic gain stood as a foundation for most expeditions. Simultaneously justifying the current expedition and providing support for future endeavors, explorers interested in self-preservation placed a premium …

The Ontology Of Pure Dispositions, William A. Bauer May 2010

The Ontology Of Pure Dispositions, William A. Bauer

Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation defends and develops the thesis that some instances, or tokens, of dispositional properties are pure. A pure disposition has no causal basis in any further properties beyond the disposition. A causal basis typically consists of some set of properties underlying a disposition that enables the disposition to manifest when stimulated in the appropriate circumstances. For example, a vase is fragile because it is disposed to break when a hammer or other suitable object strikes it, where the causal basis for fragility is the underlying micro-structure of the vase. Moreover, micro-structural properties of the vase seem to anchor the …

Poverty Among Women In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review Of Selected Issues, Hazel M. Mcferson May 2010

Poverty Among Women In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review Of Selected Issues, Hazel M. Mcferson

Journal of International Women's Studies

Gender discrimination resulting in greater poverty among women is widespread throughout the developing world. However, the incidence of women poverty, as well as its depth and their vulnerability, is particularly marked in Sub-Saharan African countries of the tropical belt, albeit with significant rural-urban differences. The article reviews the interaction of traditional restrictions on women property rights, weak governance and violent civil conflict in perpetuating gender discrimination and women poverty in those countries. Statistics show some progress in women development indicators in Sub-Saharan Africa during the last decade, partly associated with improvements in governance and the end of civil war in …

Scores: A Story Collection, Robert Paul Moreira May 2010

Scores: A Story Collection, Robert Paul Moreira

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This is a short story collection dealing with the themes of identity, immigration, death, and ethnicity, all juxtaposed with the game of baseball. The critical introduction of this thesis begins with a detailed survey of the baseball fiction genre, with a focus on seminal works and their respective authors, and their place in American literature. I examine major authors outside the genre who have employed baseball (metaphorically, symbolically, synecdochically) in their own works, as well as analyze the effect and evolution of realism in baseball fiction, and the themes of ethnicity and identity. I explore my own works in the …

El Huisache Es Pocho, Pero Las Raíces No: Poems, Isaac Chavarria May 2010

El Huisache Es Pocho, Pero Las Raíces No: Poems, Isaac Chavarria

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This project is a collection of pocho poetry. The poems in my collection emphasize my identity as pocho. The term “pocho” is often used as a derogatory term describing a Mexican American who has lost the ability to speak Spanish. I recontextualize the border pocho as an occupant of two nationalities, as well as several social classes. Along with poets who identify themselves as Chicano/a, I am inspired by family and acquaintances who self identify as Chicano/a, Hispanic, Mexican American, or Mexican. I believe the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas is a unique enclave influenced by its people, landscape, …

Angel Walking: A Documentary, Jesse F. Garza May 2010

Angel Walking: A Documentary, Jesse F. Garza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This creative thesis is divided into two parts: “The Critical Introduction” & “Angel Walking: A Documentary Screenplay.” In the “Critical Introduction to Angel Walking: A Documentary” I define the modes used and how similar documentaries and movies have helped me formulate a stronger story to showcase cerebral palsy from a 12 year old Latino’s perspective. I discuss how filming the documentary was an engaging process and led me to find a connection with the subject. This leads to how the development of writing the screenplay is somewhat of a “backward-process.” Therefore, the second half of this creative thesis is the …

Wrestling Windmills, Christopher Girman May 2010

Wrestling Windmills, Christopher Girman

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This manuscript explores the teaching process by following the protagonist‟s four year journey at a middle school in Edinburg, Texas. The narrator passes through four distinct phases: first-year angst, pedagogic subversion, converting the natives, and, ultimately, personal and professional acceptance. Daily interaction disrupts the narrator‟s worldview, complicating his relationships with peers, colleagues, family, and the local community. In a series of moves designed to make himself more accessible to students, the narrator encounters sexual, racial, and gender bias—much of it his own. Finally, after a serious accident in Central Mexico during Spring Break, the protagonist relies on his students to …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This paper attempts to explain the significant cultural elements necessary for a play set in South Texas. Three important elements that are needed to justify the importance of this production are addressed: Preplanning, Production Record, and Evaluation. Chapter 1: The Preplanning explains the purpose and approach of the play through internal and external analysis. Both of these concepts will help develop the understanding of the culture of a play. Chapter 2: The Production Record contains the complete record of the elements used throughout the production of the play. Chapter 3: The Evaluation of the production describes the success of this …

Between Silver And Glass, Catherine V. Lopez May 2010

Between Silver And Glass, Catherine V. Lopez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The critical introduction explores my stories, as well as my influences, and ultimate desires for said stories. The stories themselves explore a variety of topics. They are stories about growing up. They are stories about being a girl. They are stories about the magical world we live in. They are the sort of stories I'd like to read if I ever have free time again.

Female Condom Knowledge, Attributes And Behavior: Barriers To Use And Potential For Acceptance Among Sexually Active Undergraduate Students, Paige Nuzzolillo 6368479 May 2010

Female Condom Knowledge, Attributes And Behavior: Barriers To Use And Potential For Acceptance Among Sexually Active Undergraduate Students, Paige Nuzzolillo 6368479

Honors Scholar Theses

Minimal research has been conducted on the acceptability of the female condom among college populations despite its existence in the world market since 1992. The FC2, an improved version of FC1, has recently been released in the United States, thus prompting the need for further acceptability studies. Due to increasingly high rates of STDs among those aged 15-24, every method of protection against STDs/HIV and pregnancy must be utilized. This study involved a campus-wide survey which examined University of Connecticut (Uconn) main campus (Storrs) undergraduate students’ knowledge of the female condom, perceptions of and attitudes towards the female condom as …

Changing Clothes: Re-Dressing Voice For A Stylish Return, Deborah Gail Jones May 2010

Changing Clothes: Re-Dressing Voice For A Stylish Return, Deborah Gail Jones

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This paper concerns the idea of voice within the field of composition studies and more specifically the canon of style. I examine the current rise of style to a place of prominence within composition and take issue with the exclusion of voice from this resurgence. By looking more closely at the complex definitions surrounding voice as well as the associations and critiques which have worked to repress its contemporary discussion, I demonstrate the unfounded nature of its dismissal. After revealing the ways in which voice is compatible with postmodern thought and usable despite its complexity, I outline some of the …

Starkin, Rebecca W. Miller May 2010

Starkin, Rebecca W. Miller

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In traditional fantasy novels, as established with J.R.R. Tolkien‘s Lord of the Rings, the main character embarks on a heroic journey. As defined by Joseph Campbell, who was the author, editor and translator of books on mythology such as The Hero with a Thousand Faces a heroic journey is an epic quest that leads the hero physically to an internal rebirth. Within Campbell‘s study of the monomyth, using those conventions outlined by Campbell, I will show how Tolkien elements uses Campbell‘s conventions in Middle Earth, where a simple young hobbit ends up saving his world. In traditional fantasy, the stories …

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

My thesis is comprised of a collection of 35 poems, new and revised, and it will include an introduction that traces the evolution of my writing starting from early influences through my term in the UT Chattanooga graduate program. This abstract is meant to provide a context for the creative pr ocess involved in the making of the poems and to suggest some of the background reading that has and will go into the project. The title of this thesis, “To make a poet Black then bid him sing,” comes from the Harlem Renaissance poet Countee Cullen’s, “Yet do I …

Not Knowing The Days, Jennifer Davis May 2010

Not Knowing The Days, Jennifer Davis

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis consists of a collection of three short stories and the chapter of my first novel, as well as a critical introduction addressing the literary and creative contexts of the work. The pieces encompass a range of themes, but I have paid particular attention to perspective, perception, and a feeling of displacement or incongruity with society. In the introduction, I discuss the Southern Gothic genre in literature and how several of its characteristics have shaped the stories in my collection as well as my writing in general, especially verisimilitude and the grotesque.

Problems In A Movement-Towards A Mutual Hierarchy Social Model Of The Trinity, Jeffrey Dukeman May 2010

Problems In A Movement-Towards A Mutual Hierarchy Social Model Of The Trinity, Jeffrey Dukeman

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Dukeman, Jeffrey, A. “Problems in a Movement: Towards a Mutual Hierarchy Social Model of the Trinity.” PhD diss., Concordia Seminary, 2010. 241 pp.

Many chief adherents of a social model of the Trinity, which posits community as the ultimate ontological category in Trinitarian discourse, exhibit a hierarchy-equality polarity or tension in various aspects of their Trinitarian thought. Typically, social Trinitarians “resolve” this tension by emphasizing or choosing one side of the polarity, either hierarchy or equality, over the other. This results in an inadequate accounting for full sociality among the divine persons, where such sociality requires, among other things, both …

Cut Off From(One's) People_Punitive Expulsion In The Torah, G Thomas Hobson May 2010

Cut Off From(One's) People_Punitive Expulsion In The Torah, G Thomas Hobson

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Hobson, G. Thomas. “‘Cut Off From (One’s) People’: Punitive Expulsion in the Torah.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2010. 245 pp.

This dissertation argues that the Torah’s penalty “cut off from (one’s) people” (kareth) is normally a form of expulsion from the community of Israel, in contrast to the view that this penalty is a threatened divine extermination curse, a view reflected in the LXX and rabbinic traditions. The author traces a punitive expulsion interpretation from the fifth century B.C.E. Jewish community, to Maccabean-era practice as described by Josephus, to expulsion at Qumran. The use of the verb כדת is examined, …

The Waves Of The Deluge Breaking On Jonah The Intertextual Use Of The Noachic Narrative In Jonah, Kevin S. Golden May 2010

The Waves Of The Deluge Breaking On Jonah The Intertextual Use Of The Noachic Narrative In Jonah, Kevin S. Golden

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Golden, Kevin S. “The Waves of the Deluge Breaking on Jonah: The Intertextual Use of the Noachic Narrative in Jonah.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2010. 251 pp.

Two overarching matters are considered: intertextual methodology and its application to the use of the Noachic narrative within the book of Jonah. The intertextual methodology, the lesser of the two foci, employed within this study seeks a symbiotic relationship between the text and the reader. Textual evidence establishes the existence of the link while the reader’s interaction with the texts explores the subtleties of the intertextual relationship based upon the textual evidence. The …
