Building An Ethos Of Discipleship For Transition In The Twenty-First Century, Greg J. Boulton Apr 2007

Building An Ethos Of Discipleship For Transition In The Twenty-First Century, Greg J. Boulton

Doctor of Ministry

The tension between old and new tears at the heart and soul of the church in the United States. For example, does the church focus on building new churches and allow old ones to die? Do church leaders develop a more effective ethos that renews the hearts and minds of Christians in old and new churches? This paper deals with how leaders can develop an ethos that sustains discipleship in the life of its members. It is the thesis of this paper that long-term members of the Christian faith can be revivified through a biblical discipleship process. The paper explores …

Spiritual Formation: An Emerging Narrative In Clinical Supervision Of Counseling And Family Therapy, Evangeline Willms Thiessen Apr 2007

Spiritual Formation: An Emerging Narrative In Clinical Supervision Of Counseling And Family Therapy, Evangeline Willms Thiessen

Doctor of Ministry

Clinical professionals in the disciplines of counseling and family therapy, despite the many decades of separation between spirituality and science, currently face the challenge to attend to the spiritual realities and resources of clients' stories. As spirituality, an aspect of therapeutic diversity, moves increasingly to the forefront of counseling and family therapy literature, many clinicians still find it uncomfortable or difficult to negotiate the experiential path of addressing spirituality in practice. Although the need to address spirituality and religion is recognized, there continues to be a lack of conceptualization and methodology to guide the training experiences and preparation of clinicians. …

Pastoral Care, An Effective Front Porch For The Postmodern Church, Mark B. Hale Apr 2007

Pastoral Care, An Effective Front Porch For The Postmodern Church, Mark B. Hale

Doctor of Ministry

For over 18 years, Disney has offered over a million alumni the opportunity to benchmark the philosophies of the Walt Disney World resort. Since I am implementing the metaphor of the front porch as an integral part of the overall care model of the church, I ask, who better implements a welcoming, front porch atmosphere than Disney? Where Disney has elevated the mouse as its icon of celebrating and welcoming, I propose that Jesus is the icon for the front porch.

Rex Miller in The Millenium Matrix reminds us, "That original thinking will certainly include experimenting with past mediums of …

“Tout Travail Doit Nourrir Son Homme” The Dakar-Niger Railroad And The 1947-1948 Strike In The Political And Labor History Of Senegal, Julia Coyner Robinson Apr 2007

“Tout Travail Doit Nourrir Son Homme” The Dakar-Niger Railroad And The 1947-1948 Strike In The Political And Labor History Of Senegal, Julia Coyner Robinson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project examines the history of the Dakar-Niger railroad from its birth to its decline to illuminate the nature of the rail strike of 1947-1948 in French West Africa. The strike would prove to be a landmark in the continuous resistance of colonized peoples against the colonial state. The railroad was and is a physical as well as an invisible presence in the economic, political, and social history, and the connections that would form around this history of resistance and of colonialism from its earliest days would come to define not only the strike but the history of Senegal and …

Review Of Willa Cather And Material Culture: Real-World Writing, Writing The Real World, Edited By Janis P. Stout, Melissa J. Homestead Apr 2007

Review Of Willa Cather And Material Culture: Real-World Writing, Writing The Real World, Edited By Janis P. Stout, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

In her essay "The Novel Démeublé," American novelist Willa Cather famously protested against the "over-furnished" modern novel, in which "material objects and their vivid presentation" have overtaken artistic vision and skill. In response, she advocates "throw[ing] all of the furniture out of the [novel's] window," leaving behind "the room bare as the stage of a Greek theatre.". In the introduction to this collection of essays and in many of the essays themselves, editor Janis Stout and the essays' authors refer to and rebut Cather's famous artistic manifesto through analyses of material objects in her fiction. Stout's introduction frames the collection …

Throne Names, Pen Names, Horse Names, And Field Names: A Look At The Significance Of Name Change In The Ethiopian Political Sphere, Krista Mehari Apr 2007

Throne Names, Pen Names, Horse Names, And Field Names: A Look At The Significance Of Name Change In The Ethiopian Political Sphere, Krista Mehari

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines the motivations for name changes and the purposes the chosen names accomplish, specifically relating to the Ethiopian political sphere. Throne names and horse names were used solely by the emperors and the ruling class. Those name changes exalted the bearer by either stating his authority or connecting him to divine power. Pen names and field names were used by people not in power to hide their identity from people with the power to harm them. Although the purpose of those name changes was to disguise, the names that were chosen identified the bearer with another person or …

Nietzsche, Eternal Recurrence, And The Horror Of Existence, Philip J. Kain Apr 2007

Nietzsche, Eternal Recurrence, And The Horror Of Existence, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

Nietzsche believed in the horror of existence—in a world filled with meaningless suffering. He also believed in eternal recurrence—that our lives will repeat infinitely and that in each life every detail will be exactly the same. Furthermore, it was not enough that eternal recurrence simply be accepted—Nietzsche demanded that it be loved. Thus the philosopher who introduces eternal recurrence is the very same philosopher who also believes in the horror of existence—a paradox that is completely overlooked by commentators (who thus fail to adequately understand Nietzsche). All of this demands careful explanation.

Synthesizing Gauguin: A Comparative Look At Cultural Contexts And Gauguin’S Tahitian Paintings, Joanna Miller Apr 2007

Synthesizing Gauguin: A Comparative Look At Cultural Contexts And Gauguin’S Tahitian Paintings, Joanna Miller

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

When a plethora of primary sources exist from an artist, a tendency persists for the art historian to focus on an artist’s personality when analyzing or interpreting that artist’s work. In the case of Paul Gauguin and his Tahitian works, his personality faults, extreme character, and uncouth notions and motivations become the concentration of much scholarship and can lead to a misjudgment of the artist’s depiction of the Tahitian natives and culture. This paper examines how Gauguin represented a foreign peoples and met the goals he pursued under Primitivism, Symbolism, and Synthetism by analyzing the cultural contexts of Fin-de-siecle France …

Five Words When Ten Seem Necessary: A Memoir In Brevities, Rebecca Hazelwood Apr 2007

Five Words When Ten Seem Necessary: A Memoir In Brevities, Rebecca Hazelwood

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This is a memoir: fourteen stories on the naked page. There is an element of the concise, the succinct, in brevities that I like, a perfection of five words when ten seem necessary. For here I am a sex kitten on a mission trip, vexed with the haters, the teetotalers, and the wine patrollers. And here I am cubic zirconium next to a diamond, awed by thin tall gorgeous Jen. It is also here that I invent a not boyfriend with a penchant for plaid and here that I know about moonshine and whiskey hidden in Old Crow statues. I …

Writing And Imitation: Greek Education In The Greco-Roman World, Rubén R. Dupertuis Apr 2007

Writing And Imitation: Greek Education In The Greco-Roman World, Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

The imitation of a handful of accepted literary models lies at the core of the Greco-Roman educational process throughout all of its stages. While at the more advanced levels the relationship to models became more nuanced, the underlying principle remained the imitation of those authors who had achieved greatness. Quintilian explains the rationale as follows:

For there can be no doubt that in art no small portion of our task lies in imitation, since although invention came first and is all-important, it is expedient to imitate whatever has been invented with success. And it is a universal rule of life …

Embracing Powerlessness And Empowerment: Coexisting Contradictions Within Teacher Preparation, Cathy Benedict Apr 2007

Embracing Powerlessness And Empowerment: Coexisting Contradictions Within Teacher Preparation, Cathy Benedict

Music Education Publications

This paper explores the ways in which narratives of the "real world" and narratives of resistance collide in teacher preparation programs. The author suggests that in this collision acts of resistance serve to perpetuate and reproduce the very systems these acts seek to interrogate and challenge. How then does this disconnect, between very different ways of seeing and engaging with the educative process, manifest not only for ourselves, but for our students? This paper seeks to address how teachers of teachers grapple with, and even embrace, the contradictions of powerlessness and empowerment that come from the mindful engagement embedded in …

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Women's relationships to the state, to their societies, and to the construction of national discourses continue to provide topics for at-times-heated debates. On the one hand, generalizing about women in such a way as to claim that all women have a particular type of connection to political or social phenomena runs the risk of subsuming certain categories of difference—racial, ethnic, class, sexual—at the same time that it attempts to highlight gender difference. On the other hand, refusing to make any kind of statement about the issues faced by groups of women as they negotiate their relationships with the political movements, …
