Family Affairs Newsletter 2007-04-01, Jean Vermette Apr 2007

Family Affairs Newsletter 2007-04-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Conversation In The Odyssey, Scott Richardson Apr 2007

Conversation In The Odyssey, Scott Richardson

Classics Faculty Publications

Characters in the Odyssey do not as a rule say what they mean. Dialogue tends toward obfuscation rather than illumination, and conversation in this epic is a game at which some people are better players than others. Playing the game properly requires a keen ability to use words to convey meaning indirectly and a sensitive awareness of what has been said despite what has been said. Homer's attitude toward language extends to a generally suspicious view of the world, in which the characters' success in life, even their survival, owes a great deal to both using and recognizing speech as …

Ernaux's Ce Qu'ils Disent Ou Rien: Anne Makes A Spectacle(S) Of Herself, Elizabeth Richardson Viti Apr 2007

Ernaux's Ce Qu'ils Disent Ou Rien: Anne Makes A Spectacle(S) Of Herself, Elizabeth Richardson Viti

French Faculty Publications

Ce qu'ils disent ou rien is arguably Annie Ernaux's most comical text, untainted by such serious themes like abortion, as is the case for Les armoires vides. Narrated from the perspective of the fifteen-you-old Anne - although she would describe herself as having "bientot seize ans" (19) - the language of this "monologue interieur accusateur" (Tondeur 176) is adolescent argot that ranges from the colloquial to the outright vulgar. Furthermore, it captures a period in a teenaged girl's life that many females recognize and rememver with their own wry smile: the discovery of and sexual experimentation with the opposite …

The Music Of Senegal: A Way Of Life In West Africa, Lucien Delabruere Apr 2007

The Music Of Senegal: A Way Of Life In West Africa, Lucien Delabruere

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Music is in the veins and blood of the Senegalese people” (Bakayoko 2007). This paper aims to take a look into the reason for why this is. By examining the historical and present context of music in Senegal, one can better understand the social aspects of its music. In addition, analyses concerning the rhythmic and pedagogical importance will help provide a better picture for how we, as Westerners, can try to comprehend this rather undocumented subject.

Environment As Social And Literary Constructs: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between The Environment And Mahafaly Oral Literature, Eugenie Cha Apr 2007

Environment As Social And Literary Constructs: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between The Environment And Mahafaly Oral Literature, Eugenie Cha

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

There was a time, long ago, when a small lake or reservoir had formed in a remote area whose location still remains a mystery today. One day, a king was passing through this region. He desperately needed water and searched and searched, but to no avail. Finally, he found this lake and was able to quench his thirst, and thus prevented himself from dying of dehydration (Avimary).

This story is one of many that are present within the canon of oral literature in Madagascar today. It originated from a small town called Ampanihy, which lies in the southwestern region of …

Endangered ? Yambetta In Its Speech Community, Carolyn Benbow

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project is a study on the village of Yambetta and its efforts to keep its local language of Yambette. It looks into the organisation YALICO and the role of the local language within Yambetta’s speech community. Through observation and interviews, this study found that Yambetta is a living language not in immediate danger of dying out, and that the efforts of the Summer Institute of Linguistics through the local linguistic committee in Yambetta village is improving the chances that Yambetta will continue to be a living language. This was important because around half of the world’s languages are estimated …

Beyond The Classroom: The Implementation Of Creative Movement And Music In Schools For The Disabled, Rachel Katz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Creative movement and music are an invaluable means of creativity and expression. These art forms captivate children and nurture their growth, letting them experiment with body and sound. For students with special needs, the implementation of programs centered around creative movement, music, and dance are extremely beneficial. This study examines the effects of implementing a program based around creative movement and music in a school for the disabled in Samoa. This project is based around the observations and analysis of these activities and looks at the effects of such activities, improvements of the students, and the reactions of teachers and …

Changing Channels: The Bhutanese Middle Path Approach To Television, Kate Linthicum Apr 2007

Changing Channels: The Bhutanese Middle Path Approach To Television, Kate Linthicum

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The experience of watching commercial television and the ideals it promotes are incompatible with fundamentalist Buddhist teachings about consciousness, community and desire. However, the Bhutanese, whose culture, traditions, and worldview have a strong Buddhist foundation have not rejected the medium, which was introduced in Bhutan in 1999. But they have not fully embraced it. Instead they follow the Middle Path, weighing its positive and negative impacts in a manner that seems influenced by the guiding principle of non-extremism in Buddhist philosophy, and a notion the Bhutanese have adopted as a developmental strategy to attain Gross National Happiness. By first examining …

A Deeper Look Into The World Of Costuming, Laura Mae Franzini Apr 2007

A Deeper Look Into The World Of Costuming, Laura Mae Franzini

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

As designer for The Enchanted Attic, a children’s show, and Blood Brothers, a full length musical, I found that the requirements were vastly different for each project. In designing The Enchanted Attic I began by looking at what I knew: it was a children’s show, I knew children would be the main audience. When I was designing Blood Brothers I knew that it was a musical, and the audience was probably going to be teenagers and older since there was a bit of violence and heavier subjects addressed. My approach with these shows varied greatly, but there were still many …

Creating An Environment For Growth: Utilizing Classical Spiritual Disciplines Within A Spiritual Formation Curriculum For A Postmodern World, John R. Morley Jr. Apr 2007

Creating An Environment For Growth: Utilizing Classical Spiritual Disciplines Within A Spiritual Formation Curriculum For A Postmodern World, John R. Morley Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

The postmodern college students of today are highly tolerant of others, technologically advanced, overly protected, and exceedingly busy. Excitedly though, many of these young men and women, desire to live in community and are returning to more traditional Christian values. These spiritually sensitive students are looking for ways to grow in their personal relationship with Christ and serve others in the world. They are coming to traditional Christian colleges in record numbers in search of opportunities to deepen their walk with Christ, but many of these students do not possess the necessary tools to do so. To help these young …
