An Open Approach To Contextualising Heterogeneous Cultural Heritage Datasets, John Mcauley, James Carswell Apr 2007

An Open Approach To Contextualising Heterogeneous Cultural Heritage Datasets, John Mcauley, James Carswell

Conference papers

This paper describes a semantic museum application, which aims to present a holistic impression of the Etruscan civilisation. Through the use of a distributed computing paradigm and the CIDOC CRM ontology, the system presents a unified view of a fragmented heritage, while supporting browse and search at a semantic level. Within the cultural heritage world, however, much value is placed on ‘context’, both in describing and presenting heritage artefacts. From this perspective, a platform built upon the distributed search paradigm, although useful in many respects, does not convey how an artefact sits within a broader setting. Narrative concepts are proposed …

Classroom Acoustics And Intervention Strategies To Enhance The Learning Environment, Christal Savage Apr 2007

Classroom Acoustics And Intervention Strategies To Enhance The Learning Environment, Christal Savage

Doctoral Dissertations

The classroom environment can be an acoustically difficult atmosphere for students to learn effectively, sometimes due in part to poor acoustical properties. Noise and reverberation have a substantial influence on room acoustics and subsequently intelligibility of speech. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA, 1995) developed minimal standards for noise and reverberation in a classroom for the purpose of providing an adequate listening environment. A lack of adherence to these standards may have undesirable consequences, which may lead to poor academic performance.

The purpose of this capstone project is to develop a protocol to measure the acoustical properties of reverberation time and …

Freeze-Frame: Time And Vision In Three Early Welty Stories, Barbara L. Coots Apr 2007

Freeze-Frame: Time And Vision In Three Early Welty Stories, Barbara L. Coots

English Theses - Archive

Eudora Welty's early short stories provide a fitting career transition from photographer to writer. In particular, her creative figuration of time--enriched by her employment of photographic vision--graces her earliest collection, A Curtain of Green. In this paper, I apply a critical approach based on the narrative theory of time by Paul Ricoeur to discover meaning in three of those stories: "A Curtain of Green," "The Key," and "A Memory." Using Ricoeur's proposition of three mimetic stages--prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration--and taking the liberty to peer through the camera lens, I identify a unifying theme of feminine emergence that finds its definition …

Ladies And Loners: A Comparative Gender Study Of The Romance And Popular Western, Courtney Rena Henderson Apr 2007

Ladies And Loners: A Comparative Gender Study Of The Romance And Popular Western, Courtney Rena Henderson

English Theses - Archive

Despite the efforts of readers, writers and cultural critics, the fact remains that romance and the Western genres are considered low art. The real impetus behind this paper is not whether or not or even why they are considered low art. The important questions for me, the cultural critic, are: Why are these books so popular? What do they offer their readers? In considering their popular appeal, I think the implication of gender is the most illuminating piece of the puzzle. In this thesis, I will analyze the gender-specific fantasies offered in the Western romance novel and the popular Western, …

Word Oper Findan : Seamus Heaney And The Translation Of Beowulf, Jack Harding Bell Apr 2007

Word Oper Findan : Seamus Heaney And The Translation Of Beowulf, Jack Harding Bell

Honors Theses

In 2000, Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney published a new translation of the early medieval epic, Beowulf The work was subsequently lauded as a masterpiece. Despite this ensuing surge of interest in Heaney's translation, very few scholars have undertaken the task of a critical analysis of the translation and none have assumed the task of a comparative analysis between the original text and Heaney's version. Most, it seems, have assumed that Heaney's translation is a faithful rendition of the original, and with good reason. Heaney maintains fidelity to the structure, stylistics, and meter of the original, as well as to its …

The Dwarfing Of Men In Victorian Fairy-Tale Literature, Heather Victoria Vermeulen Apr 2007

The Dwarfing Of Men In Victorian Fairy-Tale Literature, Heather Victoria Vermeulen

Honors Theses

As Jack Zipes explains in his preface to Victorian Fairy Tales: The Revolt of the Fairies and the Elves, "The Victorian fairy-tale writers always had two ideal audiences in mind when they composed their tales -young middle-class readers whose minds and morals they wanted to influence, and adult middle-class readers whose ideas they wanted to challenge and reform" (xiv). "It was through the fairy tale," he continues, "that a social discourse about conditions in Victorian England took form, and this discourse is not without interest for readers today" (xi). My project begins with a critical analysis of the Grimm Brothers' …

Review Of Manifest Manhood And The Antebellum American Empire, Gerhard Grytz Apr 2007

Review Of Manifest Manhood And The Antebellum American Empire, Gerhard Grytz

History Faculty Publications

Amy Greenberg’s study Manifest Manhood provides an intriguing new interpretation of the meaning of Manifest Destiny and the discourse of American expansionism during the middle part of the nineteenth century. Reversing commonly held historical interpretations, Greenberg convincingly shows that Manifest Destiny continued to hold its appeal to Americans after the Mexican-American War. Proponents of aggressive expansionism viewed the Caribbean, the Pacific, and Central America as the “new frontiers” in need of conquering. Between the conclusion of the Mexican- American War and the outbreak of the Civil War, the practice of filibustering, the invasion of foreign territory by private American mercenaries …

Review Of The Southern Journey Of A Civil War Marine: The Illustrated Note-Book Of Henry O. Gusley, Charles V. Waite Apr 2007

Review Of The Southern Journey Of A Civil War Marine: The Illustrated Note-Book Of Henry O. Gusley, Charles V. Waite

History Faculty Publications

Henry O. Gusley was a Union enlisted man who kept a diary of his experiences as part of the Marine contingent on board the steamships USS Westfield and USS Clifton from May 1862 through September 1863. His notebook fell into Confederate hands when Gusley and hundreds of others surrendered after the humiliating Federal defeat at Sabine Pass. The Galveston Tri-Weekly News began printing passages from Gusley’s diary in serial form, and these entries became popular reading among Confederate Texans. Ironically, Gusley himself wrote to the paper from Camp Groce, the Confederate prison camp near Hempstead, to request copies of his …

Moi Et 'Autre: Identití Et Diversité Dans Un Cours Sur Le Film Francophone, Sylvie Vanbaelen, Corienne Etienne

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Socrates's Great Escape: Philosophy And Politics In The Crito, Matthew King Apr 2007

Socrates's Great Escape: Philosophy And Politics In The Crito, Matthew King

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Many contemporary students of Plato hold that the arguments Socrates gives the personified Laws in the Crito do not represent Socrates’s own views, but rather work on assumptions to which Crito adheres, but Socrates does not. But if the Laws’ arguments are not Socrates’s own, then we seem to be left with a bewildering problem: why would Plato provide us with arguments that Socrates does not believe in, for a conclusion which Socrates evidently does believe in? After all, Socrates does remain in prison to face his execution; evidently, he believes that that is what he ought to do. This …

The Tension Between Altruistic Character And Self-Serving Possession In A Classical Socio-Political Ethic, Jeremy S. Neill Apr 2007

The Tension Between Altruistic Character And Self-Serving Possession In A Classical Socio-Political Ethic, Jeremy S. Neill

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Much of the Nicomachean Ethics treats egocentrism as an ineffectual and pernicious social vice out of which humans ought to be habituated. In the Politics self-centeredness is almost universally portrayed as a useful and enduring constituent of human psychology. The system of private property described in the Politics can hardly be a necessary social institution when Aristotle claims in the Ethics that the habituation process is capable of permanently fixing our attention upon public and altruistic fiscal ventures. This interpretive discrepancy between the two texts demonstrates that Aristotle’s defense of private property is ineffectual in its attempt to preserve the …

My Pilgrimage In Church Growth, Waldo J. Werning

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

By the Spirit’s strength, various teachers and mentors shared truths and life applications of God’s Word with me to walk the justification and sanctification path Jesus offers with the light that He gives. My pilgrimage in the ministry of church growth that involved both Christian stewardship and church health has been and is one of reflecting Christ, our Savior and Lord, and learning from teachers, mentors, leadership networks and informative books that provided a healthy diet of God’s Word.
