‘One Is Not Born A Latina, One Becomes One’: The Construction Of The Latina Feminist Theologian In Latino/A Theology, Michelle A. González

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author argues that feminism and feminist theory are not taken seriously enough as critical resources in Latina/o theology. She interrogates the politics of identity as practiced &mdash overtly and covertly by Latinx theologian &mdash and how that identity discourse refracts the production of theology in the academy. She calls for greater collaboration among feminist theologians, as well as women who do not consciously use a feminist hermeneutic. Finally, she urges Latino theology to train a hermeneutics of suspicion on every essentialism, particularly figurings of "the people," as they often appear in Latinx theologies.

America or, more precisely stated, the British colonies in North America, was for the residents of Zurich of the 17th century a very distant region, about whose attributes the strangest information was circulated. The embodiment of the various colonies was Carolina, for whose settlement the recruiter's drum was beaten in Switzerland. The Neuenberger Jean Pierre de Pury solicited with a small tract for settlers for his newly founded settlement Purysburg in South Carolina and thereby created the impetus for a great emigration movement out of Canton Zurich . Describes a collection of first and other editions of the Scottish philosopher David Hume, recently donated to the University of South Carolina by Prof. James Willard Oliver, and uses older library records from the library of South Carolina College (founded in 1801) to chart the changing reputation and influence of Hume's philosophical works as compared to his essays and historical writings. Mr. Andrade briefly recalls his family and childhood; growing up, he and his family endured extreme economic hardships; in 1948, when he was eighteen years old, he enrolled in the Bracero Program; he describes the difficulties he went through during the hiring process as well as the humiliating medical examinations he and other braceros underwent at the reception center in Eagle Pass, Texas; as a bracero, he picked cotton in New Mexico and Texas, cleaned sugar beet fields in Montana, and he also worked in a pickle bottling factory in Michigan; he goes on to explain the daily activities on …

Mr. Rosales remembers the Cristero Revolution from when he was four years old; he became a bracero in 1956, and recounts his work picking grapes in California and cotton in Texas; additionally, he recalls how he learned to irrigate crops; this duty became his primary job; he recounts how he was hospitalized once and had surgery paid for by his employer; furthermore, he expresses that he received good treatment from his employers, and that he is proud of having been a bracero.

Mr. Salcido worked in the Bracero Program from 1957 to 1964; he recalls the hiring process for braceros, the medical exams they endured and how they were treated at the reception centers in Empalme, Sonora, México and the United States; additionally, he describes picking cotton in Arizona, cucumbers in Michigan, sugar beets in Montana, and irrigating cotton in Texas; he explains his pride in having been a bracero, the benefits of being a contracted migrant worker, and how his earnings during the Bracero Program helped him purchase the properties he owns.
