The slate of Nebraska recently witnessed a controversy surrounding the names of several geophysical features, like rivers or creeks. According to a February 191 2001, Omaha World-Herald article by Todd von Kampen and Nichole Aksamit, the push was to change all the place names that contain the word "squaw" to more appropriate, less offensive names. The movement was strictly voluntary; no law required the changes. However, there was a good deal of resistance, even from some lawmakers. Henry Beard Delany and Emma Beard Delaney were two African-Americans who rose from the obscurity of an enslaved family to achieve distinguished success in their individual lives. A period of time does not portray a history. To achieve that, one needs ideas, theories, and assumptions. There must be a concept with a structure systematically laid out, which reaches points of view leading to firm conclusions that allow the recording of this history of two dynamic African-Americans. Few scholars would quarrel with Ernst Dassman's observation that early Christian "reserve" toward the political cultures of antiquity--a mixture of difference and indifference, which only occasionally gave way to hostility--turned Christians' outcast status into something of a virtue.Still fewer are likely to dispute the assertion that influential fourth-century Christians unreservedly welcomed the changes that came with Constantine and anticipated the "Christianization" of imperial, if not also local, politics. But evaluations of Augustine's enthusiasm later that century and early the next never fail now to elicit disagreement

This article was revised from the author's invited lecture presented at the American Librarians Association Annual Conference of the Reference and User Services (RUSA) Meeting in the Local History Section in San Francisco, June 2001. It includes an introduction to the history of Chinese surnames, types and functions of Chinese genealogical records, problems in Chinese genealogical research, and how to conduct a typical Chinese-American genealogical research with examples for further research.

Evolutionary indeterminists argue that, in addition to any indeterminism introduced by quantum events, at least some evolutionary processes are themselves fundamentally indeterministic. That is, they maintain that the chance element in evolutionary processes results from indeterminism in the processes themselves, rather than simply from our cognitive limitations. Not everyone has been persuaded. A number of philosophers have argued that claims for evolutionary indeterminism are premature at best and deeply confused at worst. They maintain that evolutionary processes can and should be understood as deterministic processes. According to them, "chance" is merely a word denoting our ignorance of causes. This controversy …

This thesis looked at the feasibility of training EFL students to speak English \\·ith a Standard American English accent, using the same techrnques that actors employ to acquire an accent for a given role. Four Liberian refugees, currently residing in Cairo, were chosen to participate in a 21-hour pronunciation course, designed and taught by a theatre teacher \\·ho currently instrncts his students in theatrical training, including accent modification, at the American University in Cairo. The concept of civil society has deep implications on conditions of liberty, democracy, and human rights where it is applied and/or observed in the Middle East. An integral part of civil society dynamics has been the presence and agency of non-governmental organizations, including those stemming from a religious foundation, among which are organizations that are inspired by the Christian faith. This study attempted to investigate Egyptian learners and teachers beliefs about learning English as a foreign language. Research questions focused on exploring beliefs about three factors that contribute to successful language learning. These factors were the process of language learning, the role of the EFL teacher and the role of negative feedback. In addition, this study aimed at examining the relationship between beliefs and learners' proficiency level. It also attempted to highlight the extent to which learners' and teachers' beliefs were similar or different.

This needs assessment was undertaken to explore whether a gap between the actual and required English language performance of AUC Library support staff (LSS) existed. Travel writer and humorist Bryson has revised, adapted, and updated his style guide, first published in 1984 in Britain as Penguin Dictionary of Troublesome Words and in the US as Facts on File Dictionary of Troublesome Words, to appeal to contemporary American book buyers. Presenting itself as a "compilation of suggestions, observations, and treasured prejudices," the work compiles and comments on commonly misspelled words and proper nouns and other conundrums of usage scrupulous writers or copy editors may face.
