False Starts depicts a variety of characters—a single mother, a dishwasher, a philosophy student—who discover the mendacious nature of their world views and concepts of self. The worlds they inhabit are not as sensible as they supposed. Some quietly acquiesce to the chaos, like the single mother in "Still Tank," who gently continues in her role despite the death of her pet jellyfish. Some fight this revelation like Lea in "Another Love Story." Lea assaults her ex-boyfriend, a dishwasher who broke up with her for no fathomable reason. Set at False Cape on the coast of Virginia in the year 1912, this story is about a shipwreck, but it is also a story about choices--between love and honor and betrayal--that face a woman and two men who serve in the U.S. Life-saving Service: Rachel Grey, a widow from Princess Anne County who marries and moves to the desolate beach at False Cape; Robert Grey, keeper of the False Cape Station; and Michael Midgett, a surfman under Grey's command. The purpose of this thesis is to examine through the medium of short story moments of the unsaid, and how those moments keep us from true, pure communication with ourselves and with one another. Moments of the unsaid are those that make up the hours that make up the days of our lives„ those in which experience cannot be conveyed through language, those, in fact, in which using language to convey experience lessens such. Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

The goal of this study was to learn more about the experience of minors in states with parental involvement laws who do not involve their parents in their abortion decision, and must therefore seek judicial authorization for an abortion, and to use this knowledge to explore ways to minimize the burden of these laws. At the outset, it should be made clear that having this goal does not indicate that we support imposing third-party involvement requirements on teens seeking to abort.
