A Boyhood At Ashland, Hjalmar Kjems
The Bridge
At last the train stopped at Grant in Michigan and Father said, "This is where we get off." The sun was shining in a cloudless sky, and friendly people gathered around us and bade us welcome in Danish, but a Danish that had a strange sound. Outside of the station, there was a wagon to which was harnessed a wonderful little horse. It was yellow with a black muzzle, mane, and tail. Never in our lives had we seen such a beautiful horse. Father said it was ours and we were to ride on it, or with it hitched to …

The Influence Of Selected Noncognitive Variables On The Academic Success Of Urban Black High School Males In An Enrichment Pre-College Program, Leon Rouson
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The thrust of this study was to examine the influence of selected noncognitive variables on the academic success of urban Black high school males in an enrichment Pre-College Program. The major research question was: Which of the selected noncognitive variables are most useful in predicting academic success for urban Black high school males?
This study reinvestigated Sedlacek and Brooks' (1976) proposed set of seven noncognitive variables related to academic success: (a) self-concept; (b) realistic self-appraisal; (c) understanding of and ability to deal with racism; (d) preference for long-term goals over more immediate, short-term needs; (e) availability of a strong support …

"The following is a distillation of a spoken presentation by the author, assisted by the Andrews University choirs, given as the opening event of Faith Ablaze! Hymns of Heart and Heritage, a hymn festival held at Andrews University in November, 1999.1 It is a journey through time, starting with the beginnings of the church and continuing to the present, one in which we hope you, the reader, like those present that evening, can come to a better understanding of how our hymns came about, and what they meant to those who preceded us. Given the constraints in time that evening …

Montaigne And The Coherence Of Memory, Douglas Mcfarland
Montaigne And The Coherence Of Memory, Douglas Mcfarland
Quidditas
Among the many classical authorities to whom Montaigne refers either through direct reference or quotation, little attention has been paid to Lucan and to his contribution to the intellectual and rhetorical strategies of the Essais. Hugo Friedrich, for instance, in his chapter on Montaigne’s intellectual inheritance from the classical world, does not even mention Lucan’s name. Although Virgil, Lucretius, Plutarch, and several others clearly have influenced both the style and content of the Essais in seemingly more direct and overt ways, Montaigne, nevertheless, turns to Lucan consistently and with regularity. The essayist directly alludes to Lucan on three occasions …
Meter Change As A Relic Of Performance In The Middle English Romance Sir Beues, Linda Marie Zaerr
Meter Change As A Relic Of Performance In The Middle English Romance Sir Beues, Linda Marie Zaerr
Quidditas
Despite the paucity of direct evidence of performance, some form of public representation of the Middle English popular verse romances remains a possibility, and that possibility has been reached by extrapolation from a number of directions. The convergence of evidence, though indirect, has become convincing, and a new approach strengthens that likelihood even further. In an attempt to understand if and how the romances were performed, scholars have considered internal references to performance, historical documents of performance and audience, physical evidence from the manuscripts, cognitive theory, theory of orality and “mouvance,” and evidence from textual variants.
