Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne Jan 2000

Consumed By Faith: The Development Of Christian Fundamentalism And Its Applications In Contemporary Society, Laura M. Gagne

Honors Theses

My research aims to understand how and why fundamentalists justify violence against people who do not fit their profile of "righteous" or "saved" persons, such as abortion doctors and clinic workers, gays and lesbians, and Jews. The first section of this paper travels through the history of fundamentalism since its origins in the British and American apocalipticism, or belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. However, my history of Protestant Fundamentalism in the United States will focus on the ways in which Fundamentalism developed in response to many changes in American social structure. I interpret Fundamentalism as an anti-modern …

American Holocaust Films: A Case Study In Jewish American Identity (1937-1993), Jeff Daniels Jan 2000

American Holocaust Films: A Case Study In Jewish American Identity (1937-1993), Jeff Daniels

Honors Theses

When examining the image of the Jew in American Holocaust films, one is truly determining how American Jews view themselves. These films' presentation of Jews exposes not only how Jewish Americans wished to see themselves but also how much Gentile Americans wanted to see of Jewish culture. An exploration of America's Holocaust films from the late 1930s to the early 1990s reveals an increasing concentration of Jews as the main victims of the event. The degree to which this specificity is emphasized exhibits how much the American public accepted Jews and their plight. At the same time, the prevalence of …

Variable Léxica Y Comparación Dialectal, Orlando Alba Jan 2000

Variable Léxica Y Comparación Dialectal, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

Changing Landscapes: Stories Of Five Women Farming Ecologically, Sherri Joy Van De Hoef Jan 2000

Changing Landscapes: Stories Of Five Women Farming Ecologically, Sherri Joy Van De Hoef

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Community and the natural environment have always played an important role in my life. I have had the opportunity in the past few years to explore these areas in more depth. My introduction to Community Psychology during my undergraduate degree exposed me to agricultural initiatives that emphasized community and respect for the environment. I explore these initiatives further by conducting a study (van de Hoef, 1998) of Ontario couples who live self-reliantly (that is, they grow their own food, build their own homes, live off the electricity grid, and find supports in their local communities). Subsequent to that study I …

Sir Walter And Mr. Jones: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, And The Rise Of American Golf. Prologue, Stephen Lowe Jan 2000

Sir Walter And Mr. Jones: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, And The Rise Of American Golf. Prologue, Stephen Lowe

Faculty Scholarship – History

During the period 1914-30 Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones dominated golf. The publicity they generated contributed much to the transformation of American golf from an elite pastime to a popular spectator sport, and together they led the way in establishing the U.S. as an international golf powerhouse. Both were outstanding sports heroes, yet their backgrounds, personalities, and public images were remarkably different--even antithetical. Sir Walter and Mr. Jones are revealing enough as individuals, but taken together they provide comparisons and contrasts which illuminate a pivotal period in the history of golf and American society.

Toward A Cohesive Account Of Reid’S Scientific And Moral Self-Evident Principles, Kevin Twain Lowery Jan 2000

Toward A Cohesive Account Of Reid’S Scientific And Moral Self-Evident Principles, Kevin Twain Lowery

Faculty Scholarship - Philosophy

This paper examines the nature of Reid’s self-evident principles by determining the properties that he claims for them in general, alluding to specific references to science and mathematics in the process. Next, it explores the uniqueness of moral self-evident principles, identifying any obstacles that might preclude a cohesive account. Finally, an attempt is made to remove these obstacles by providing a more comprehensive interpretation of moral principles, one that will relate them more closely to scientific principles. This will rely on notions that are implicit, rather than explicit, in Reid’s writings.

The American Colonization Of The Philippines And The Self-Examination, Self-Presentation And Re-Presentation Of American Identity, Jennifer Marie Mcmahon Jan 2000

The American Colonization Of The Philippines And The Self-Examination, Self-Presentation And Re-Presentation Of American Identity, Jennifer Marie Mcmahon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study is an exploration of the disruptions that can be perceived in American identity through a close examination of America's colonial experience in the Philippines in three different, but related, contexts. The first is an analysis of American writers' reactions to the colonization, specifically those of Mark Twain, W. E. B. Du Bois, and William James. These writers were vocal contributors to the debate surrounding the colonization, though, like the colonization itself, these works have been largely ignored. These writers identify contradictions in American identity, focusing on issues concerning race, capitalism, individualism, American innocence, exceptionalism, and self-reliance. These are …

Toward An Alternate Mode Of Discourse For The Pastoral Counselling Relationship In Light Of The Process Pastoral Theology Of Larry Kent Graham And The Narrative Therapy Of Michael White, William Lorne Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This project develops an alternate mode of discourse for the pastoral counselling relationship informed by the process pastoral theology of Larry Kent Graham and the narrative therapy of Michael White. Using hermeneutical research methods it is shown that while Graham's research emphasizes a connective approach to personhood and human relationship, White's research emphasizes a narrative approach. The project begins by exploring the possibilities of developing a connective-narrative description of human relationship. The traditional description of the pastoral counselling relationship informed by the language of modern psychology is then reviewed and set in contrast to the language used by Graham and …

The Siberian Museum Games , Mikhail Gnedovsky Jan 2000

The Siberian Museum Games , Mikhail Gnedovsky

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The wholly unexpected and anomalous award of the prestigious European Council prize to the Krasnoiarsk Museum Center (Siberia) in 1998 for "contributing to the development of European ideas" caused a minor international sensation. A refurbished version of the former Lenin Museum, which opened during glasnost, the Museum Center became an experimental exhibition ground that showed remarkable imagination and resourcefulness in realizing the potential of an excellently equipped building, advantageous location, and enormous open spaces. Collaborating with lively local movements, the Center simultaneously imported traveling exhibits from other museums and arranged expositions that thematized its geographical identity. The two Biennials organized …

Russian Club Life, Nadezhda Azhgikhina Jan 2000

Russian Club Life, Nadezhda Azhgikhina

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

While the 1990s in Russia witnessed a marked decrease in the officially sponsored clubs that organized Soviet citizens' leisure hours along ideologically approved collective lines, they also ushered in a host of new, diverse clubs closer to Western models. The broad range encompassed political, business, professional, and sports clubs, as well as health clubs, the night clubs that received bemused coverage by the Western press, and the clubs created primarily by and for the New Russians. Among the last, the exclusive English Club, which ruled as Moscow's premier club, combined stylish relaxation amidst lavish surroundings with a more covert agenda: …

Style And S(T)Imulation: Popular Magazines, Or The Aestheticization Of Postsoviet Russia , Helena Goscilo

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The new Postsoviet genre of the glossy magazine that inundated bookstalls and kiosks in Russia's urban centers served as both an advertisement for a life of luxury and an advice column on chic style. Conventionalized signs of affluence, models of beauty, "educational" articles on topics ranging from the history and significance of ties to correct behavior at a first-class restaurant filled the pages of magazines intended to provide an accelerated course in etiquette, appearance, and appurtenances for Russia's newly wealthy. The lessons in spending, demeanor, and taste emphasized moneyed visibility. Despite their differing emphases, popular magazines all shared the new-found …

Literature On The Margins: Russian Fiction In The Nineties, Mark Lipovetsky Jan 2000

Literature On The Margins: Russian Fiction In The Nineties, Mark Lipovetsky

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Despite shrinkage in print runs and readership, canonical Literature during the 1990s developed along three major lines that connected writers of various generations in both aesthetics and philosophy: realism, exemplified in Georgii Vladimov's prize-winning novel, The General and His Army (1994); postmodernism, richly represented in the fiction of Vladimir Sorokin, Viktor Pelevin, and Vladimir Sharov; and neosentimentalism, as derived from the naturalism of early perestroika, most consistently embraced by Liudmila Petrushevskaia, Liudmila Ulitskaia, and, in his paternal profession de foi, one of Russia's chief theorists of postmodernism, Mikhail Epshtein. All three tendencies aspired to the status of mainstream, which …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the religious-patriotic discourse on Queen Victoria. the monarchy. and the British empire produced by the Anglican and Methodist clergy in Ontario during the celebrations for the sovereign's Golden Jubilee in 1887 and the Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The discursive representations of the queen, constitutional monarchy, and imperialism, embedded within the sermons and patriotic literature of the two churches, differentiated into separate patterns of …

Winning The War, Winning The Peace: The Image Of The 'Indian' In English-Canada, 1930-1948, Robert Scott Sheffield Jan 2000

Winning The War, Winning The Peace: The Image Of The 'Indian' In English-Canada, 1930-1948, Robert Scott Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines the impact of the Second World War on the image of the 'Indian' prevalent in English-Canada between 1930 and 1948. Traditionally, historical studies have assumed that the war formed a watershed in Canadian social, cultural and Aboriginal history: marking the end of the 'era of irrelevance' for Aboriginal people and creating a paradigm-shift in feelings about 'racial' tolerance and human rights. This study explores the shift in English-Canadian images of the 'Indian' from 1930 to 1948, as a way of testing the prevailing interpretation of the war as a major historical pivot in Canadian cultural constructions of …

Voices Of Solitude In Creativity, Rebecca Jane Carpenter Jan 2000

Voices Of Solitude In Creativity, Rebecca Jane Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

Solitude is a philosophy, a state of mind, and a lost art in today's frantic world. Evolving from the Latin root word "solus" which means "alone," it is a concept which carries an aura of mystery, because it moves at the pace of reflection and focuses on the wonder of the present moment. Much of society views solitude with distrust, fear, or even contempt as it counters the current trends of perpetual activity, technological domination, and instant gratification.

This essay explores the author's three-way encounter with the richly intricate nature of solitude, to pursue an intuitive belief in its significant …

'Queerscapes': Lesbian Women's Experience Of Bias In Supervised Pastoral Education (Spe) In The Canadian Association For Pastoral Practice And Education (Cappe), Margaret Arlene Eby

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Five women members of The Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE) who self-identified as lesbian were interviewed concerning their experiences of bias based on sexual orientation in supervised pastoral education programs and its perceived impact on the development of personal and professional identity. Inductive content analysis indicated that these women experienced less overt bias in the form of homophobia in CAPPE than they did heterosexism. Data obtained suggests the presence of negative effects of heterosexism on collegial relationships, pastoral care/counselor education, theological understanding and the process of professional development. Covert bias in the form of homophobia was experienced …

A Homiletical Hermeneutic For The Re-Writing Of Hymn Texts, J. Daniel Gibson Jan 2000

A Homiletical Hermeneutic For The Re-Writing Of Hymn Texts, J. Daniel Gibson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is concemed that with the growing practice of hymn-text revision, a lack of consistency and quality is evident in some alterations which do not have the benefit of clear criteria and guidelines for such revision. This is of particular interest to preachers and pastors because of the significant relationship between preaching and hymn singing which have complemented and supported each other in the proclamation of the gospel. Sixteen issues or concerns about language usage and imagery are identified. Each of these issues is explained and examples are given to illustrate why individuals and faith groups today may have …
