Spanish comedia brims with examples of fluid gender identification. Not only do women frequently dress as men, but other characters almost always accept them as men or women depending solely on the clothes they wear. Is gender so superficial in these plays that it is merely a function of one's choosing the signifiers one wants to wear? Or is there an essentialism to gender that forces each character to assume the gender that corresponds to his or her sex in order to have a happy ending? The Sedition Act Of 1798 And The Incorporation Of Seditious Libel Into First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christopher D. Jenkins

On July 14, 1798, more than six years after the ratification of the First Amendment, the Federalist controlled Congress of the United States passed the Sedition Act. This Act, codifying the substantive English common law of seditious libel, made it a federal crime to publish defamatory matter against the Congress, President, or government of the United States. Republican critics of the act argued it to be unconstitutional as a violation of Congress’ limited powers, and the First Amendment’s press clause. Federalists, however, interpreted this clause to permit prosecutions for seditious libel. The ensuing public controversy over the Sedition Act represented …

Christopher Marlowe's plays reflect the changing concepts of gender found within the time he wrote them, as Elizabethan England struggled with the contradictions between the ancient, rigid gender roles embodied in the Petrarchan model and the paradox of a female monarch who rejected all suitors. This struggle, coupled with the rising popularity of the companionate marriage that itself implied some degree of sexual equality, challenged fundamental patriarchal assumptions about gender, property, even government, and critical thinkers like Marlowe infused their works with ideas from the debates of the day. S. military’s capability to thwart the Soviet threat. Even though, Communism never had been an extreme threat to U. S. national security. The Jean Donovan Catholic Worker House grew as a response to the political, social and economic climate of the 1980s. Within the tradition of the Catholic Worker Movement, three CSB/SJU alumni endeavored to relieve the physical suffering of the poor and the social suffering of the St. Cloud area in an attempt to take action against the status quo. Through personalism, hard work and the generous help of others, the Jean Donovan House not only fed hungry people, but also helped educate the community about the social problems created by a culture of consumption and morally questionable government leadership. The 2000 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Patterson Baptist Church, in Grover, NC and New Hope Baptist Church, in Earl, NC. The minutes are dedicated to memory of Rev. Rochelle Ray Ingle, Mrs. Jane Monroe Brendle, and Mrs. Mafrey Richard Sesson. The Baptist Counseling Center of Cleveland County was established in August; Dr. Gary McFarland is the counselor. Gardner-Webb is reported to be the fifth largest private university in the state and the Doctorate of Ministry program will begin next fall.

Art and Art History

Much can be learned about the working methods of scribes and artists when they leave their product unfinished. This is true of the late thirteenth-century illustrated Gospel book, Paris, Bibliothe`que Nationale de France, cod. gr. 54. It was intended to be a deluxe, bilingual (Greek and Latin) manuscript featuring full-page evangelist portraits and an extensive narrative cycle of some fifty-two miniatures. In the end, only about half of its Latin text and twenty-two narrative miniatures were actually completed. Five other miniatures remain unfinished, and space was reserved in the text for twenty-five additional miniatures that were never even begun. No …
