Storytellers: Scandinavian's Art Told Of Restoration, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

Missionary work in Scandinavia began 150 years ago with the arrival of the first LDS missionaries in Denmark on June 14, 1850. In keeping with the observance of the sesquicentennial of the Scandinavian Mission, the Church News presents this article by J. Michael Hunter about two prominent Latter-day Saint artists from earlier days in that part of the world. The art and work of Carl Christian Anton Christensen (1831-1921) from Denmark and Danquart Anton Weggeland (1827-1918) from Norway are discussed, focusing on their use of art to tell stories. Images of their art accompany the article.

"Memory_Archive_Database v 3.0" details and discusses the implications of the rising internet database in relation to information, art, and society within the early 2000s. With the internet database, the perpetually updated mass digital archive of information available to the general public. Being as prominent as it is, its holistic effects over the art world has grown tremendously and continues to do so with its expansion into the modern art world. Dietz discusses these implications in length, specifically “database culture” and its effects on new media art as well as different works of new media art which pertain to data archiving. …

This article provides a general discussion of the evolution of the World Wide Web and its rapid takeover within many crucial sectors of the modern world such as energy, education, and the military. Dietrich details the function of data and its role as “the heart of everything” that defines the realities of society’s current computer environments. The author cements this idea by using, British mathematician Alan Turing’s insights regarding the computer’s superior symbol universal processing capabilities in comparison to the original symbol processor at our disposal, the human brain.

This article presents a discussion of the broadening definitions of performer and performance and the ways in which technology contributes to that flexibility through this intermix of the real world and its interaction with virtual reality. The author then details how the nature of this relationship not only shifts the role of performer but redefines performance as both real and virtual. She argues how new media in the age of technology has opened the doors for its visual, aural and textual information to both mimic and record reality.

In part two of an interview conducted by Gerri Wittig with a speaker from Etoy, they descibed the 1999 legal battle of etoy, a European art collective, versus eToys, an American toy retailer. Etoy was sued by eToys over having a similar website domain. The subsequent interview with a representative speaker from etoy discusses etoy’s financial status in how they are handling the lawsuit, etoy’s personal motives behind the lawsuit, and the future of etoy as an art collective.

The heavy presence of the National Football League in Florida on Saturday, three Florida teams involved in two playoff games in the state, may or may not be a record. It is however an indication of how much the geography of sport has changed since the end of World War II. These changes are seen not just in Florida but all across the American landscape and are a reminder of how much sport has changed over the past half-century.
