Austin Farrer (1904-1968) was an Oxford don who has been described as "the greatest Anglican thinker of his generation."¹ The son of a Baptist minister, he was trained at St. Paul's School, London, and Balliol College, Oxford. After ordination as a priest in the Church of England and brief service in a Yorkshire parish, he returned to Oxford, where he served as chaplain and tutor at St. Edmund Hall from 1931 to 1935, as fellow and chaplain at Trinity College from 1935 until 1960, and as warden of Keble College from 1960 until his untimely death in 1968. This study will first survey the development of interim ministry and its purpose and use in congregations. Second, this study will review the Lutheran Confessions regarding the call to the Office of the Holy Ministry and the implications for interim ministry. In order to hone our understanding, Luther's writings will also be examined. Pertinent to understanding what was confessed by the Reformers is what was practiced by the Reformers; therefore, the history of two important pastors and one exemplary situation of the Reformation era will be examined. In 1997, Ira Katznelson contributed to the ongoing discussion among social scientists and historians about how to analyze class formation and the development of the American state. He was particularly interested in tying this research to the history of liberalism in an effort to both historicize the generalizations of Louis Hartz and address the question of American exceptionalism. Evaluating the body of research, Katznelson argued that authors had too frequently abstracted the state from its context and then used it to explain the very phenomena that helped define the state's character in the first place. This essay argues that Basic Writing students, teachers, and scholarship are crucial to enabling colleges and universities to live up to their ideals of diversity, interdisciplinarity, and student-centered learning. BW scholars and teachers have developed ways to work with students to better understand the different perspectives they bring to their writing and learning, and to use those perspectives to break down barriers between academic and non-academic worlds and develop "borderland" knowledge and perspectives. The authors call for more research exploring the potential of basic writing students to develop such perspectives, and for research exploring the implications of BW scholarship for …

This nonfiction narrative traces the fiddle from its European origins to its American incarnation as a folk instrument, blending history with the personal stories of fiddle makers and players. The centerpiece around which a varied cast of luthiers and musicians shifts, the instrument itself is the main character of the narrative.

As the work unfolds, various facets of the fiddle's identity are explored, revealing a riddle of instrument—a creation whose beauty confounds, and whose anatomy contradicts physics and geometry, science and sense. More than anything else, perhaps, this narrative, in the end, is an attempt at penetrating the mystery of …

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes on an Outer Banks Village is a work of narrative nonfiction that focuses on Duck, North Carolina, a rapidly changing village on the northern Outer Banks, and the people, both living and dead, who have had a stake in it. This collection includes profiles, oral history, personal essay, and reportage. It attempts to recreate the past, detail the present, and speculate on the future of this once sparsely populated neighborhood of risk takers--the seafarers, fishermen, and hunters who lived there with their families.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the personas that Elizabeth used to gain, hold, and wield power during her reign as Queen of England. These personas were most likely conscious constructs created to deal with the problems Elizabeth faced as ruler of England. She had been bastardized by her father, Henry VIII, and, therefore, was considered by many to have no legitimate claim to the throne. The economic, social and cultural effect of tribal gaming on a Michigan Indian tribe is the focus of this study. Twelve individuals, identified as knowledgeable informants, were interviewed on how the tribal community has been impacted by the successful gaming operations and whether the nature of the gaming enterprises was an important factor.

During the interview process, the members of the community defined the changes in their lives resulting from the large amount of income that was benefiting this previously impoverished community. The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions, attitudes, and experiences of active-duty homosexual/bisexual military servicemembers. Very little research currently exists on this topic because the sample population remains hidden among the ranks of their heterosexual counterparts for fear of discrimination, harassment, and physical violence. Using a snowball sampling technique, survey analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship among homosexual/bisexual military servicemembers and assess their experiences. Most homosexual men and women serve effectively in the military and are proud of their military performance. Although many homosexuals join the military to suppress their desires, the majority (70%) felt that …

This novel explores loyalty and responsibility to family versus the desire to choose a life of one's own. The story is told &om the first-person viewpoint of Annie Revels, who is born in 1900 on a barrier island off the coast of Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The story also explores the positive and negative aspects of a life spent in intimate isolation. Annie must battle the vagaries of nature, the prejudices of a male-dominated culture, and the tensions of a crippled family unit. This project assists pastors in preparing parishioners to confront the realities of suffering and dying with a God-given identity in a world that seeks to cure pain and suffering by killing. A survey of the pastors and laity of the Michigan District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod was conducted to identify their understanding of dying well and to ascertain whether or not they have been influenced by our postmodern society. On a whole the pastors and laity viewed dying in Christ as dying well. A Bible study was developed to assist pastors in preparing parishioners to die well.
