This paper is about Christianity in Latvia in the twentieth century. The country of Latvia is located on the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea in Northeastern Europe. Christianity was brought to this country at the end of the twelfth century. Only in the twentieth century did the Christian Church in Latvia become truly indigenous and diverse.

The Church history in Latvia began with the crusading attempts of German bishops and religious orders that brought Roman Catholicism to Latvia at the end of the twelfth century. The Catholic bishops and religious orders dominated both the ecclesiastical and political life in …

This award is intended to recognize an academic department within the Universityof Nebraska for an outstanding record of accomplishment in its teaching program. The award carries a $25,000 grant to the department. It was created in 1992 to emphasize the importance of quality instruction throughout the university. The selection committee for the award is composed of senior faculty members representing all four campuses of the University of Nebraska. "Oh, I Have A Story": Narrative As A Teacher's Classroom Model, Kathleen J. Martin

Ethnic Studies

This paper examines the teaching practices of one American Indian teacher in a high school literature class. It explores the teacher's use of narrative as an instructional strategy designed to convey abstract concepts through concrete experience. The narratives engage students in critical thinking and personal reflection, and provide them with the opportunity to make connections between social and historical contexts. In addition, the teacher uses stories to contrast multiple contexts with personal experiences, which reflects teaching strategies previously identified as those used by effective teachers. Historia is a joint publication of Eastern Illinois University's History Department and the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Edited entirely by EIU students, Historia is designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to publish their work. Students who wish to work as Historia editors must enroll in HIS 4900 (Historical Publishing), which is offered each spring. Students who wish to submit articles or reviews for consideration are welcome to do so at any time.

Historia earned third place in Phi Alpha Theta's Gerald D. Nash History Journal Prize competition in Division I in 2011.

What's So Special About A Special Ethics For Business?, Earl W. Spurgin

Philosophy

In business ethics literature, debate over a special ethics generally has framed examination of the rules governing business. By constructing a dilemma faced by proponents of a special ethics, I argue that this framing is misguided. Proponents must adopt either an insular or a derivative conception. The former, the view that business is insulated from moral rules, is problematic because arguments used to support it force proponents to accept the idea that each aspect of life is insulated from moral rules. This idea, however, renders philosophically insignificant the claim that business has a special ethics. Proponents no longer make a …
