The American Board's Single Missionary Women In American Indian Missions, 1810–1860, Lisa Jacqueline Travis

Between 1810 and 1860 in American Indian missions, single missionary women comprised half of the female workforce in the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). Because the ABCFM operated as a business for converting and assimilating American Indians, it hired single women to perform vital and various tasks. Missionary couples requested that the ABCFM appoint single women to teach, perform domestic work, and care for mission children. Biographically, they resembled each other, but their reasons for becoming missionaries varied. Some single women became missionaries after lifelong dreams, but others because the suggestion was made. Interpretations of Emerson's theme of self-reliance which generate charges that he understood neither evil nor virtue are inappropriate. A fairer reading should keep in mind the Neo-Platonism of Plotinus, which gave to Transcendentalism a dynamic emanation/return schema and to mankind a place of privilege in knowing and valuing Nature.

From the beginning of their movement in 1560 through 1860, Scottish Presbyterians were at the forefront of spiritual revival in the English-speaking world. This survey article traces the history of revival activity in Scotland, Ireland and America during the modern period, highlighting the significant people and events that contributed to these local, regional, and national religious awakenings.

On a spring day in Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1843, fourteen year-old Helen Mar Kimball, married thirty-seven year-old Joseph Smith, prophet, president, and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The couple did not publicize the event nor invite friends to attend. Secrecy shrouded the wedding. A public announcement would not have been prudent for the young Latter-day Saint (LDS or "Mormon") church, as Helen's new husband, Joseph Smith, was not only already married, but to dozens of other women.1

The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle

This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.

Cross Racial Preferences In Viewing Sexually Explicit Material: A Comparison Between African-American And Caucasian Males, Boyd Randal Horton

The present study investigated that extent to which the race of actors in an erotic video affected sexual arousal in African-American and Caucasian heterosexual males. It was hypothesized that the two racial groups would be significantly more sexually aroused while watching their respective homoethnic erotic video. The hypothesis was grounded in the modeling effects of Bandura's Social Leaning Theory (1977), the Matching Hypothesis (1982) and worldview differences between African-Americans and Caucasians (Baldwin and Bell, 1985). Thirty-four African-American and Caucasian males were shown homoethnic and non-homoethnic erotic videos while penile circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and self-report ratings of sexual …

This thesis is a documentation of my rehearsal and performance process in the University of Nebraska’s 1999 production of Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov. The document is composed in six parts: introduction, research, rehearsal and performance, journal, responses, conclusion and appendix.The introduction gives a general overview of my thoughts on acting and how this project was chosen.
