"The Contagion Of Liberty": Mercy Otis Warren And The Beginnings Of Feminist Sensibility, Donnamaria Gerych

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will examine the life and writings of Mercy Otis Warren. The first section of the essay will examine the current historiography concerning Warren. Historically, her place has been somewhat ambiguous, particularly in view of what constituted feminism for early American women. By focusing on "republican motherhood," modern historical interpretations have overlooked Warren's contribution to feminist ideology. In effect, these interpretations have confined Warren to this one identity, diluting and disregarding the impact of a published female writer, not just of poetry and plays, but of a bona fide history of the Revolutionary War and the early Republic.

Shaha's translation of Nyayavijayaji's Jaina Darsana (Jaina philosophy and religion).

These two recent books on the Book of Esther by young scholars illustrate the vitality of new methods of interpretation of the biblical text; at the same time, they raise questions about the limits of these new methods. Laniak, approaching the Book of Esther from an anthropological perspective, uses its categories of honor and shame. Beal uses postmodern critical theory to illuminate the shifting meanings of “self” and “other” in Esther. The two books have several things in common—rather surprisingly, given their very different orientations. Neither author gives much attention to the historical value of the Book of Esther; both …

RICHARD WAKEFIELD explores two of Thomas Eakins's paintings and two of Robert Frost's poems to examine the impact of modern life and concludes that the principle characters all "hear the tick of the clock and feel the gaze of Emerson's all-conspiring society." Wakefield teaches American literature at Tacoma Community College and the University of Washington, Tacoma. His writings have appeared in numerous journals, including Robert Frost Review, American Literature, and South Carolina Review, and his poetry has appeared in a variety of venues.

The motivating impact that visual images of Christ have on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cannot be overestimated. In 1844, Joseph Smith, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ran for president of the United States. At the April 1844 LDS general conference, a call was made for volunteers to "electioneer for Joseph to be the next President," as Heber C. Kimball put it. Immediately, 244 elders volunteered. By the time the list of names was recorded in the records of the Church a week later, the number approached 340. Even more elders eventually volunteered or were called to take up the cause. Joseph Smith spent Sunday afternoon, April 7, 1844, in a grove behind the Nauvoo Temple. There he gave a funeral sermon, which lasted for over two hours, dedicated to a loyal friend named King Follett, who had been crushed by a bucket of rocks while repairing a well. Known today as the King Follett Discourse and widely believed to be the Prophet's greatest sermon, this address was Joseph's most cogent and forceful presentation of his Nauvoo doctrine on the nature of God, including the ideas of a plurality of Gods and the potential of a man to become as God. …

Georgia O'Keeffe said, "I think all the world has turned into what I'm seeing." Because O'Keeffe remained publicly evasive throughout her life, it is unknown what her art reveals about how she saw herself. However, what her art reveals about how she saw the world is apparent. The magnification of flowers and bones, the intensification of lines and colors in her paintings force viewers to look closer and to see differently.
