Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

The Information Systems (IS) discipline is apparently undergoing an identity crisis. Academicians question the need for IS departments in colleges stating the absence of a core for the field and its integration within other business functions as a basis for its elimination. At the same time, many practitioners, as reflected in the US government's recent IT labor shortage report, continue to ignore IS as a distinct field of study. This article briefly outlines these and other challenges and argues that notwithstanding underlying philosophical differences, it can be concluded that IS is an emerging scientific discipline. "Images of Christ in Latter-day Saint Visual Culture" by Noel Carmack offers an outline of the history of the Latter-day Saint use of images depicting Christ, pointing out influences and tensions that Carmack argues directed the choice of these images from 1890 to 1999. My own approach to this historical pattern is a simpler one: the selection of images of Christ by most Latter-day Saints today is influenced more than anything else by the Saints' cultural background, which determines how they think Jesus would look; and the proliferation of these images is largely an economic issue and a result of …

While Joseph Smith was incarcerated in Liberty Jail from December 1, 1838, to April 6, 1839, he wrote or dictated eight surviving letters. Four were addressed to Emma, his wife, and all of them display the sterling character of the Prophet Joseph under trials of the most extreme conditions imaginable. His letter of March 20, 1839, directed to "the church of Latter-day saints at Quincy Illinois and scattered abroad and to Bishop Partridge in particular," is one of the most revealing and most significant letters ever written by a prophet of God in the dispensation of the fullness of times. …

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Because of their inherent abstraction, systems ideas are not themselves sufficient for gaining scientific knowledge or solving practical problems, but they can be a source of insights into the universality of imperfection, insights which can contribute to a new scientific world view. Systems theory offers a metaphysics, or more precisely an ontology, of imperfection. Through it, we can heed Spinoza's injunction, “Not to lament, not to curse, but to understand.”

In this manuscript, I attempt to reveal what Don DeLillo has called "the world inside the world." The manuscript's title and structure explore the dichotomy between a thing's interior and its exterior. A carnival, on its surface, is a collection of amusements: rides, games, barkers, cotton candy, and the like. However, as the title poem suggests, the word carnival also represents a time for celebration, general merry-making, and, in its most archaic sense, the liturgical season just before Lent. Thus, one can view a carnival as an amusement, or as a prelude to sacrifice and penance, or as a …
