Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

V.Y. Mudimbe's Dechirures (1971) has been widely analyzed. Some critics have emphasized the poet's hermetism or intellectualism; others, his themes; still others attempt to reveal the moral lesson that emerges from his poetry. In this article, by focussing on the meaning of the poet's opening declaration ('I would like to cry out against poems''), by weighing quotations from Jean de la Croix, Rembrandt and Mallarme in the text, and by situating this collection in the context of African literature, the author is seeking to demonstrate that Dechirures can be considered as a manifesto for a postnegritude poetry. 10 | The Synagogue At Korazim: The 1962–1964, 1980–1987 Excavations, Ze’Ev Yeivin

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The town of Korazim is of special interest to Christendom, and thus was frequently mentioned by scholars and travelers to the Holy Land. The identification of Korazim with Khirbat Karazeh is now almost universally accepted. The site was extensively surveyed and excavated in 1962–1964, under the direction of Ze’ev Yeivin on behalf of the Department of Antiquities. Based on these excavations, the layout of the town and the setting of the synagogue within it could be elucidated. In 1980­–1987, excavations at the site were resumed, during which some 30 probes were carried out in the synagogue and its vicinity.

Shortly after the adoption of the 1857 Constitution in Mexico, a small group of Mexican priests left the Roman Catholic Church and attempted to establish a national catholic apostolic church in Mexico. This movement became known as the Church of Jesus. With the help of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States it continued until 1906 when it ceased to be independent and officially became a mission project of the American Episcopal Church. Historians have placed the burden of failure of the Church of Jesus on factors in Mexico and have not taken into account the party strife within …

Each time a person in a language class responds to a question with "I'm sorry, I forgot," the person is implying that language learning consists mainly of memorizing. The long lists of vocabulary items learners try to commit to memory also imply that memorizing is the key mental activity required in language learning. Questions in textbooks and on tests that ask for facts also send the message that learning and memorizing are equivalent. In fact, though we need to memorize some things, much of all of learning, including language learning, requires thinking: processing sounds we hear and symbols we see. …

It is widely accepted that a self-access center provides opportunities for the students to develop their English proficiency skills out of class. Even though a self-access center requires a large sum of budget and resources, its practical usefulness for language learners and its effect on the users' proficiency development have not been fully investigated. This paper is a reflective piece. Most ELT teachers are very devoted to their students, but most of the time they find themselves weary from teaching. Most teachers want to help and to improve their students' English; however, they are not sure how to do it. Hence, this paper explores some of the possibilities through the communicative approach. It makes an attempt to explain what this approach is and how it can be applied to the classroom; it looks both at its advantages and disadvantages.

A crucial part of knowing a language is knowing how to interpret variation- what it means if someone uses one form rather than another to say the same thing. This paper examines four ongoing changes in spoken English, and what it means to be a user of the old form or the new one. We interpret the identity of the people with whom we speak based upon these minor differences, and we often assess the truth or validity of what they are saying based on our assessment. Team-teaching is a versatile instructional approach that has been implemented in a variety of English language teaching and learning settings for different pedagogical and administrative purposes. Existing research claims that by extending the teaching competencies of teachers through group interaction and process sharing, the quality of instruction provided to the students can be improved.
