The Monument To Brigham Young And The Pioneers : One Hundred Years Of Controversy, J. Michael Hunter

For more than a century, the Brigham Young Monument in Salt Lake City has been the center of sometimes acrimonious controversy. The idea and organization to create a monument were begun in 1891. The statue of Brigham Young was completed by Cyrus Dallin in 1893. Many delays in raising funds caused the monument not to be finished until 1900. Thereafter it often became the target of those trying to improve traffic conditions in the downtown area. In 1993, the monument was moved just north of the intersection to improve the flow of traffic. On the monuments one hundredth anniversary, "The …

An eponym, the dictionary tells us, is a name formed from the name of a person to designate a place, and an eponymous person is someone for whom a place has been named. Prince Avenue, the wide Athens street which stretches west almost exactly two miles from Pulaski Street to the Jefferson Road, is an eponym. Described as “once one of the nation’s finest boulevards” by Frances Taliaferro Thomas in her excellent book A Portrait of Historic Athens and Clarke County (1992), but now dotted with professional buildings, fast food businesses, and parking lots, Prince Avenue was named after a …

On Sport and Society

The Orlando Predators, reigning champions of Arena Football for two years running, had a billboard promotion at the beginning of this season showing a close-up of the more than ample breasts of a local woman known as "Laurie." The billboard caption read, "Fake Right. Fake Left." Now I know people around the country are saying, "what do you expect in a state that is the home of a mammary-themed restaurant chain?" but in fact there were people locally who found this in bad taste.

In the last part of a series of interviews conducted by Michael J. Birkner, Robert Reynolds discussed on August 23, 2000 his life after World War II. After the war, Reynolds moved to Gettysburg. He discussed his time at a rubber factory and his decision to become a teacher at 50.
