Arts education can be an important part of the elementary child’s experience. However, keeping the arts in schools is often a challenge because of funding concerns and competing academic priorities. An important strategy in arts education advocacy and policy is arts integration. Arts integration creates a rationale for the arts based on the enhancement of the educational experience for all students and the potential to engage underserved or less engaged students with academic disciplines through the arts. “A Tyrannical Grace”: Mabel Frazer, The American West, And The Navigation Of A Man’S Space, James R. Swensen

In 1949 the painter Mabel Frazer (1887–1981) applied for, and finally received, promotion to the position of associate professor of art at the University of Utah. Yet, after nearly three decades of diligent service, she witnessed her male peers, often with far fewer bona fides, receive advancement.1 This was the challenge, she acknowledged, of being a “woman in a man’s institution.”2 Throughout her career Frazer repeatedly overcame similar challenges and, by so doing, defied and redefined what it meant to be a female artist in Utah. "We Have Not Been Allowed The Liberty... To Worship As We Please" Nancy Naomi Tracy And The Denial Of Latter-Day Saint Religious Liberty, Derek Sainsbury

This article examines the life of Nancy Naomi Tracy as a lens into the Latter-day Saint struggle for religious liberty in nineteenth-century America. Joining the Church in 1834, Tracy endured repeated persecution—from the Missouri expulsions and the 1838 Mormon War to the federal antipolygamy campaigns of the 1880s—yet actively fought for her faith’s constitutional protections. As the only known female electioneer missionary in Joseph Smith’s 1844 presidential campaign, she embodied the Saints’ bold blend of religious conviction and political engagement. Drawing on Tracy’s three personal reminiscences (1880, 1885, and 1896–99), the study explores how her experiences as a wife, mother, …

Black Women's Relational Competencies And Ethical Leadership In The Workplace, S. Alease Ferguson, Toni C. King

Three qualitative case vignettes illustrate Black women leaders’ application of relational competencies to assert culturally informed ethical values in organizational life. Theoretical frameworks of Patricia Hill Collins’ (1994) theory of motherwork and Wilfred Bion’s (1991) psycho-dynamics theory of group development guide the analysis of Black women’s relational competencies. Methodologically, the data derive from the authors’ use of phenomenological review of over three decades of corporate and non-profit consultancies. This methodology entailed uncensored story genera- tion relative to the topic and culling of the story set guided by a rubric to screen for story features that exemplify group and relational competencies …

Abuse of any kind as well as significant losses such as death of a loved one can result in a broken spirit (Proverbs 15:13, 17:22). However, we have a wonderful God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Isaiah 51:3). He often leads us into communities where we can experience being seen, soothed, safe, and secure. This chapter describes the experience of brokenness and the process of healing integrating both biblical and interpersonal neurobiological perspectives.

This article presents an overview and continuation of a study investigating how artist awareness and critical response might provide a better understanding of mindfulness and its practice within art education. While there are distinct advantages to mindfulness practices in education, these practices might also have problematic aspects, such as helping people conform to oppressive structures in education rather than questioning them. The pandemic of 2020–2021 accentuated student concerns with social, emotional, and mental health and illuminated possible benefits of mindfulness practice. Results show that preservice art education students used mindfulness and data visualization to connect art and self-inquiry. Important findings …

At first glance, it is apparent that this is not a typical art book or exhibition catalog. Spiral bound with various, variegated folios and sections, Devour the Land appears to be taken from a restricted archive. Indeed, everything down to the chosen fonts makes it seem as if this was a government record. Yet, it becomes quickly evident that this engaging text is not a report that federal authorities would like to broadcast. By subverting the look of a bureaucratic document, this text penetrates and probes the very system it wants to critique.

The scriptures consistently depict the significance of sacred space and sacred time in the lives of the Lord’s covenant people. Sacred time is still experienced today, as in the past, through commemorations and celebrations on specific days that are dedicated to God and thus regarded as holy. These days punctuate the passing of ordinary or common time and are intended to help bring focus and clarity to relationships with the divine.

Rates of suicide and self-harm have been increasing in children and adolescents over the last 20 years (CDC, 2022). Suicidality and self-harm are preventable, treatable, and manageable. Parents and those who work with children, teens, and young adults are an important part in addressing this issue. This article reviews the current statistics of suicide and self-harm, role of trauma, risk-factors, causes, prevention, and treatment options. Practical tips and resources are included. The reader will better understand the phenomenon and know how self-harm and suicide can be prevented and treated.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is no longer a young denomination within the large family of Christian churches. In this article, we explore the relevance of the concept of relational empathy to L2 learning. To this end, we first provide a short overview of the notion of empathy in second language acquisition (SLA). Then, we present ideas that gave rise to the introduction of relational empathy in the field of intercultural communication, along with potential benefits of taking this perspective in SLA. Next, we describe the post-method framework for L2 teaching as a strategy that is both well-suited for the fostering of relational empathy and is facilitated by the exercise of this approach.
