Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Catherine Beavis, Judith Kalman, Macrina Gómez, Gert Rijlaarsdam, Anne D'Antonio Stinson, Melissa E. Whiting

Faculty Publications

Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June 2002 for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …

A Freedom That Is No Freedom: Jeremiah 34 And The Sabbatical Principle, Rolf A. Jacobson

Faculty Publications

The “release” of the Hebrew slaves during the time of the Babylonian siege was a cynical affair, setting the slaves “free” from being provided food and shelter by their owners in a time of scarcity. The passage raises important questions about the nature of freedom: freedom from? freedom unto? freedom for?

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon Sep 2002

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon

Faculty Publications

As Mormon abridged the Nephite record he included what he deemed most relevant for latter-day Israel including stories of war. The so-called war chapters provide a rich resource of modern-day spiritual applications for teachers and students of the gospel (see Alma 43-62). One way to apply these chapters is to draw a parallel between the physical and the spiritual between Moroni's physical battles on the field and the spiritual battles that we face in our own lives today. To be more specific we might ask these questions: (1) What strategies did Captain Moroni use to prepare and protect himself and …

Re-Radicalizing Kierkegaard: An Alternative To Religiousness C In Light Of An Investigation Into The Teleological Suspension Of The Ethical, Jack E. Mulder Jul 2002

Re-Radicalizing Kierkegaard: An Alternative To Religiousness C In Light Of An Investigation Into The Teleological Suspension Of The Ethical, Jack E. Mulder

Faculty Publications

In this paper I defend the view that not only does Fear and Trembling espouse the teleological suspension of the ethical as a radical suspension and even possible violation of otherwise ethical duties, but also that Kierkegaard himself espouses it and carries the belief through his entire authorship. A brief analysis of Religiousness A suggests that Climacus made a dialectical error inConcluding Unscientific Postscript. This error is corrected by Anti-Climacus and Kierkegaard's own journals, and the correction makes possible a full-blooded affirmation of the teleological suspension where Climacus failed. This reaffirmation can explain the shift from Climacus to Anti-Climacus on …

Conversion, Conversation, And Acts 15, Lois E. Malcolm Jul 2002

Conversion, Conversation, And Acts 15, Lois E. Malcolm

Faculty Publications

Conversion and conversation converge in the light of trinitarian theology and in the book of Acts. The point of our moving beyond Jerusalem, of our outreach, is not to make others like ourselves, but to participate in an event that calls everyone involved out of themselves into something new and larger than themselves.
