Graduate Recital, Juergen Sass
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The purpose of this writing is to:
1. to clarify and give added meaning to the recital which is being presented partially in place of a master's thesis
2. to give expression to those studies which the author feels are most helpful in strengthening him In his teaching.
The paper will consequently consist of four sections; one will deal with the vocal mechanism which should be thoroughly understood by every vocal teacher, whether he may work with young teen-agers or college students. The next two sections will cover the development of vocal pedagogy and the evolution of the art song. …

As this writer began preparation for the recital, many problems of performance began to manifest themselves, problems which are not encountered in opera or oratorio. First one must consider the problem of endurance . Would this singer be able to meet the demands of one full hour or recital performance?
Inasmuch as some of the compositions chosen seemed more demanding than others, it seemed advisable to alternate numbers which placed great physical stress upon the singer with those which allowed some moments of ease and relaxation. It is also necessary to consider significant periods and styles of vocal literature and …

The inclusion of such a large number and variety of songs and arias in a vocal recital necessitates a separate discussion of each composer involved and his contributions to vocal literature. Accordingly, the writer has compiled this report into sections dealing with the composers. A brief biographical sketch of each composer has been given and an analysis of the music performed in the recital has been made .
The personal translations of the writer are included with each song written in a foreign language . To a singer not familiar with the language, the meaning of a piece is as …

It is traditional in a master's recital for violin to include representative works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and/or Modern periods. Further, it is customary that the Baroque selection be one of the unaccompanied Bach sonatas or partitas . The program selected in this graduate recital conforms to these standards and to the recommendations of my violin professor, Mr . Richard G. Strawn.
To understand these customs that have developed for violin master'• recitals, it is important to consider the violin literature to see how the forms have varied in the different historical periods. Each new form has brought new …

As long as the writer has been considering his graduate program, he has felt, because of his own peculiar limitations as a performer, that a recital project would be more beneficial to hie developing musicianship than a research and thesis project.
Strangely enough, the writer had participated quite actively for seventeen years in a most varied succession of musical organizations without having acquired that badge of authority that his successful colleagues wore so proudly: mastery of a particular instrument.
During those years, tho writer had sung soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass in various choral groups, performed upon the piano, …

The author began his formal studies toward attainment of an advanced degree in November of 1961. However, the decision to perform a recital was not made until summer, 1965. The desire to improve performance abilities to the point of excellence on at least two instruments was the deciding point in favor of a recital. A more important motivating factor, related to this point of achieving excellence, was the desire to become a better teacher. It is well understood that a teacher's performance on an instrument can inspire students to become better performers. It is a necessity to be able to …

Many needs of the instrumental music teacher are filled by his being able to demonstrate tone quality, phrasing , proper breath support, and technique. One of the needs is the enrichment of the aesthetic portion of the student's education. The student may have great potential but must be guided with the demonstrations listed above to gain a fine musical experience. The teacher then understands the needs of the student and is able to fulfill them by the same type of study that every student must go through to play his instrument well.
A teacher can learn many things during the …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The writer, in preparing for the recital , was concerned mainly with the following objectives:
1. To improve his own ability to perform well with the vocal instrument.
2. To find new avenues of approach to the problem of teaching correct vocal methods in the classroom.
It is the belief of the writer that if one does not continue to study and learn of the many problems that arise in teaching the vocal art , he will not perform well as a teacher of that, or any, art. The writer is sure that if he had not continued his studies …

Herbert B. Maw, like many other Utahn’s, is a self-made man, a poor boy who sold newspapers from the age of ten to fifteen, and worked nights to put himself through college. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1923 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree, and in 1926 he obtained a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University. Maw received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1927 from Northwestern University, and in the same year he was elected to the Utah Senate on the Democratic ticket. In 1847, the Mormon Church began a migration to the Great Salt Lake Basin, their Zion in the mountains. This pilgrimage was to continue for over half a century, and out of it was to come one of the truly epic stories of the western settlement. Before leaving Nauvoo, these self-styled, Saints of the modern era pledged themselves to set up a system to transport all of their members to Utah, regardless of their financial status. The vow was renewed at the October 1849 Conference held in Salt Lake City. President Heber C. Kimball, first councilor to Brigham Young, suggested …

The prospect of presenting a recital was very exciting to the author for two reasons. First, in spite of the fact that he has been associated with music as a performer and teacher-conductor for twenty years, this writer has participated in only one formal solo recital situation. This was a performance of Morceau Symphonic, to complete requirements of a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brigham Young University, and was prepared with little formal supervision. The second, which is directly related to the first, was the desire of the author to attempt to prove that he had gained at least a …

It is of utmost importance that the instrumental music teacher be able to demonstrate proper tone quality, breath control , fingering techniques, and phrasing. He must also understand the problems which the student will encounter and have to overcome in the study of the different instruments. One of the most effective methods of learning is through actual performance . The teacher learns many points during preparation for acceptable performance which may be applied to other instruments as well as the specific problems of that instrument. The writer felt that the performance of a woodwind recital would be the most practical …

The opportunity to select and perform qualified musical literature on a graduate recital offers the individual music teacher a challenge that is commensurate with the duties of his profession. A major responsibility of the music educator is the selection, rehearsal, and performance of the best possible literature that will meet the educational aesthetic needs of his particular performing group. It could be said that one of the most potent factors in preserving and expanding the musical culture of our society is the part played in it by the music educator and his wisdom and choice that he displays with this …

The writer's presentation of the recital was concerned with improving and demonstrating playing technique on the french horn also introducing some original ensemble compositions to both performers and listeners which might be used by music students. It is the belief of the writer that many qualities of good musicianship can be developed more rapidly through solo and small ensemble performance than through larger organizations because literature can be selected which is more suitable for the capabilities and developmental needs of the individual performer. It is hoped that these ensembles will be useful and worthwhile contributions to the demand for ensemble …

When the author commenced his Y~ster ' s program in the summer of 1959, it was decided that a lecture-recital project would be more desirable in his case than the alternative procedure of doing original research and writing a thesis . The writer has never regretted the decision, but it must be confessed he felt more than once that a thesis would have been the easier project. (Naturally, those who have written theses do not usually agree with this statement.) In fulfillment of all expectations, and despite the difficulties encountered, or rather because of them, the performance of the recital …

A major responsibility of the high school band director is to guide young students in solo and ensemble studies. Successful experiences of this type help develop the student's individual playing and listening abilities which contributes to a more effective band program. It was the purpose of this recital to afford the writer and opportunity to gain added insight in the area of solo and ensemble preparation and performance which might be useful in developing more effective teaching methods.
In preparing this recital the writer was concerned with the selection of solos suitable to the needs and competencies of the performer, …

In the teaching of woodwind instruments, the inherent differences of these instruments with regard to tone production, pitch characteristics and technical problems, make it imperative for the instructor to have an intimate knowledge of these factors. Through actual demonstration by the teacher, the student is made closely aware of the multiple difficulties involved in woodwind instrument performance. It was the writer's purpose in the recital to demonstrate the characteristic tone quality and basic technical facility on each of the major woodwind instruments in addition to some of the standard repertoire for these instruments.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In today1s public school band the percussion section is often neglected. Some band directors consider the percussion section a place to deposit outcasts. Even though a full, accurate and well-trained percussion section adds polish to a band, few band directors admit its importance. Percussion instruments are seldom recognized as effective solo and ensemble instruments even though both solo and ensemble work can help the percussionist become an accomplished musician.
In this paper, it is proposed to examine the history and development of percussion instruments and percussion music and to thus establish the importance or the percussion section in the public …

The selections in the recital given by the candidate can be divided into four sections. The first four songs can claim as their origin in time the early Italian school of the Baroque period. The two selections following these represent the oratorio. The aria by Haydn properly comes from the Class-ical era. The aria from Mendelssohn's oratorio is from the Romantic period, but it is referred to as Classicist-Romanticist, due to different elements of style and technique used by the composer.1 The third part of the recital is composed of art songs, taken from the German Lieder group, the first …

The writer, after conferring with his graduate committee, selected a lecture-recital project in partial fulfillment of the requirements for his Master of Science degree in Music Education. As a junior high school instrumental teacher and specialist on the low brass instruments, he was advised by his committee chairman, Professor Max F. Dalby, to also utilize some of his junior high school students on the recital. It was suggested that he play various instruments with them, as well as appropriate solos on his major instruments: euphonium, tenor trombone, and tuba. To show the writer's versatility, it was also suggested that a …

The problem of helping children to make continual progress in their singing ability has been of particular interest to me because of the experiences I have had in teaching music to third, fifth, and sixth graders. In most cases the children had had few teachers who were trained or experienced in teaching music. In one district there wasn't even a music supervisor to whom teachers could go for help if they felt they needed it.
The problems on which I have done research to write this paper are the ones which have been the most common in my experience. I …

Since the end of World War II most teacher-training institutions have reinforced and expanded requirements for graduation in instrumental music education; but the problem still remains of determining the actual training needs of the instrumental music educator and the manner in which these needs can best be fulfilled in the relatively brief period of time available for educating the teacher . It is the responsibility of the music departments of the teacher-training institutions to determine the most practical and efficient courses and projects which will better equip students in instrumental music education for teaching general music classes, performing on their …

In the 1959-60 Utah State University catalogue a new program is outlined for graduate study towards a Master of Science Degree in Music Education. under the provisions of this section a candidate may elect a thesis project or a lecture-recital (16 p. 124). After conferring with his committee, the writer decided to choose a lecture-recital should be confined to specialization in the field of woodwind instrumental instruction. Under the provisions outlined by his adviser, Prof. Max F. Dalby, the writer was to perform on all of the five major woodwind instruments -- flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon.
