From the beginning of the recital preparation , which began seriously about nine months prior to the performance, certain objectives were established. These objectives dealt with the areas of performance and composition. Concerning the performance, the objectives were to perform on the three "standard" symphonic trumpets -- the Bb , C, and D -- with competency and musicality; to play successfully varying styles from the periods which produced great trumpet literature -- the Baroque and Modern -- and to improve specific personal technique problems. J. S. Bach, in his Italian Concerto, has the solo keyboard carry on a dialogue with itself. The work appeared in 1735 in Bach's Clavierubung, Volume II, which had to excuse its printed existence by explaining that it had instructional value. And so, along with this Concerto Nach Italiaennischen Gusto, or concerto "following the Italian taste," it also included an Overture (or Partita) " in the French manner. "

The acquisition of new skills and the further development of previous skills has always been one of the ideas behind the graduate recital. Along with new skills come the knowledge and experience necessary to affect the individual's own performance and the performance of those whom he teaches . In music education it is difficult to teach that which one has not yet experienced or mastered and the graduate recital helps to fulfill the experience requirement and give new insights into understanding all aspects of music as a listener, performer, and teacher.

The master's recital in piano customarily includes works from the Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and Twentieth Century Periods, The recital presented has conformed to these requirements with works by Bach , Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy.
The partita, sonata, and nocturne represent musical forms which reached their ultimate development in the works of Bach , Beethoven, and Chopin, respectively, during the periods in which they were composed. It is traditional in a master's recital for violin to include representative works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and/or Modern periods. Further, it is customary that the Baroque selection be one of the unaccompanied Bach sonatas or partitas . The program selected in this graduate recital conforms to these standards and to the recommendations of my violin professor, Mr . Richard G. Strawn.
