“The Mirror Of Desire”: Britomart And Spenserian Perception In The Faerie Queene, Brandon J. Muri

In modern usage, “love” and “justice” are terms used to describe universal standards of behavior even though the modern materialist worldview cannot account for such universal, abstract entities. Spenser’s Faerie Queene dramatizes the conceptual origin of these and similar terms in human experience; for, as C.S. Lewis has noted, Spenser’s poetry “Consists in giving an imagined body to the immaterial” (AL 322). Posing an answer to the question of whether these “imagined bodies” reflect an order of being transcending human experience, the romance narrative of Book III argues in the affirmative by demonstrating that universal standards such as love and …

In an intimate spiritual memoir, Ranger shares her reflections on a journey of self-discovery. Through a narrative written in diary format, she compares and contrasts the Religious Society of Friends and the Seventh-day Adventists and calls for better understanding of and bridges between liberal and conservative Christians. Seventh-day Quaker examines the role and practice of sabbath, silence, prayer, rites and rituals, evangelicalism, the Bible, Creationism, God's existence, and the call to ministry.

We were taking a trip to visit the water source of a community that contained nearly 1,000 people. Mircea Eliade describes mythic narratives as telling “a sacred history … [by] disclos[ing] their [Supernatural Beings’] creative activity and reveal[ing] the sacredness of their works” (Myth and Reality 6). Eastern and Western traditions alike rely on mythic narratives in order for insiders to be unconsciously transported to the sacred times and places of those mythic narratives. Christianity is a tradition which is very diverse, though most all insiders are engaged in Christian prayer. Some people, such as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, eagerly embrace the opportunities that magic promises. Others, however, fear and despise magic, and so condemn anything that contains so much as a sprinkle of pixie dust, just as Harry’s aunt and uncle do. A look into the reception of the Harry Potter series, particularly in the United States, demonstrates how these two responses to magic occur, and why this series in particular created such strong reactions from both sides. The Pokémon franchise is a global powerhouse however it lacks representation that is necessary for the variety of races, sexualities, genders, and sexes that inhabit the countries where the games are released. These are fleshed out with the analysis of the works of Anne Fausto-Sterling, Jack Judith Halberstam, Judith Butler, and a critical analysis of the releases and features of the Pokémon games. As with most directors whose careers began with (and consisted of) the process of filmmaking with actual celluloid, it was only a matter of time before French auteur Claire Denis made the transition to digital – and it was in 2013 that she did just that, abandoning physical film in favor of digital cinema for her neo-noir feature Bastards. The decision to switch wasn’t reluctant, though, as Denis had expressed an interest in experimenting with the format on her previous film White Material (2009). It thus makes sense that critics tend to present strong arguments about the political agendas of Mexican filmmakers from the 1970s. Among the most popular in the subject is Paul Leduc, whose work has been cast as exemplary of the political ethos of the day. However, it is my position that, upon close examination, Leduc’s films seem not always to present a straightforward political message, much less one that would clearly bolster the aims of the Echeverria administration. Much of film theory holds that film is primarily an act of communication, whose message the audience understands. While this allows us great insights into the ideological and subconscious functions of a great many films, it falls short of this success with more enigmatic films. In instances such as these, where films are not easily understood, a different paradigm is necessary. Using philosophical texts as comparative tools in film analysis provides the answer to this "blindspot" in film criticism.

Narrative Discourse In Bilingual English-Spanish Speakers: A Case Control Study, Sarah Young

The study explored differences in storytelling between bilingual English and Spanish speakers and monolingual English Speakers, differences between Spanish and English storytelling in bilingual speakers, and the relation between language ability used in storytelling and language ability used on a structured measure of language ability. Ten second and third grade children were targeted for this study – five of whom were monolingual English speakers and the other five were bilingual English-Spanish speakers. Bilingual children completed two sessions – one in English and one in Spanish – while monolingual children completed one session in English. Each session contained a narrative retell, …
