Contrary to the predictions of secular philosophers for the past several centuries, religion remains alive and well. In fact, in the past several decades, especially in the United States, the role of religion in politics has grown immensely. For the political philosopher Jürgen Habermas this poses a problem. How can a state remain neutral to competing worldviews, religions included, whilst respecting the equal rights of religious citizens to view themselves as authors of the laws that bind them? When examining the Holocaust, there are a great number of different facets and ways to go about learning about that part of history. One aspect of the Holocaust that has a great deal of information to look at is the medical implications. This could be looking at the actual medicine that occurred in the concentration camps, including medical experiments, to the SS men and prisoners that were appointed as doctors in the camps, to so much more. Executions, disappearances, and exile are not the first words that come to mind when picturing the long, versatile landscape of Chile. Nonetheless, Chile was under the harsh control of Augusto Pinochet from 1974 until 1990 and experienced a high level of political oppression during that time. Though Chile had only a short film history before the rule of Pinochet, cinema remained relevant despite the exile and hardships experienced by several prominent Chilean filmmakers. Ironically, under the hostile dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, Chile developed a stronger national cinema, producing politically and historically motivated films made by the exiled filmmakers, who persevered …

Barbara Roos started teaching when Grand Valley was just a few buildings erected on a slab of midwestern prairie. Nixon was in office then, and young draftees were still being sent to Vietnam. In those days, Grand Valley – not yet a university but a cluster of colleges – was alive with the spirit of the counter-culture. William James College, among the most pedagogically experimental of the colleges, was interdisciplinary and non-departmental – it emphasized harmony between theory and practice, thought and action. “Struck With Her Tongue”: Speech, Gender, And Power In King Lear, Kate Downey Hickey

My thesis addresses the supposed sexism in William Shakespeare’s King Lear through an examination of the power of speech in the play. Employing a variety of scholarship, I argue that Cordelia exerts power both through prudent speech and in her silence, adhering to Renaissance expectations for women but also defying the unreasonable behavior of her father. I explore how Cordelia’s values are recognized by and through other characters, especially Lear’s Fool. While Cordelia is often viewed as the opposite of her sisters Goneril and Regan, I provide a reading of the play that treats all three sisters as complex characters …

German-American Compositional Identity In William Henry Pommer’S The Legend Of St. Etheldethelwethelberga And Quartet No. 1 In G Minor, Nikolaus Schroeder
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
William Henry Pommer (1851-1937) presents an interesting case study of German-American composition in the Midwest. Pommer’s family was among the first settlers of the self-consciously German town of Hermann, Missouri. Pommer first studied in St. Louis, then traveled to Leipzig and Vienna, where his teachers included Reinecke and Bruckner. Upon returning to the US in 1875, he was active as a composer for about twenty years and also became a prominent music educator in Missouri schools and universities. Pommer occupies a unique compositional position; he interacted with American performers, composers, and educators for most of his life, but received his …
