Kiss/Caress, Laurie Green

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

Like many aspects of self, my sexuality remained under wraps for the first three decades of my life. I felt desexualised in my body, unaware of my autism but deeply aware of my alienation and social position. Unable to find a sexual reflection in popular culture and bombarded with tropes of toxic masculinity I turned my sexual desires inwards. Only with my closest confidant, my partner, did any semblance of sexuality emerge, mediated by images and symbols imbibed as a teenager. My deep desire for connection that extended into sexuality felt ossified and unaired—kept in an air-sealed wrapper, like a …

Images Of Nursing From West Michigan: A Photo Essay, Aldina Mahmutovic Apr 2019

Images Of Nursing From West Michigan: A Photo Essay, Aldina Mahmutovic

Honors Projects

The image of nursing is diverse and complex, with public perceptions influenced by traditional imagery and negative stereotypes. Few recent studies consider how nurses view their professional image. My study aimed to uncover how West Michigan nurses perceive the image of nursing. Approval was given by the local Sigma chapter (Kappa Epsilon at Large), to recruit participants from members, and by Grand Valley's IRB. Via an online REDCap survey, participants submitted an original photo and written narrative. Submissions were searched for underlying patterns using thematic analysis. Themes identified were: (1) nurses establish relationships with unique and vulnerable clients, using their …

And This: Is The Journey To The Center Of Freedom, Erin Williams Apr 2016

And This: Is The Journey To The Center Of Freedom, Erin Williams

Photography Senior Thesis Projects

And This: Is the Journey to the Center of Freedom is a personal allegory, navigating the collections of stories, events, and feelings that are relevant in my life. There are distinct, quadratic layers to categorize these events appropriately. These are recognitions and representations of an individualistic experience; one that could not have been made without the institutions it has been balanced on.

This has been rooted in the various struggles and encounters that have occurred throughout my life’s course thus far. There are the four layers, which are representational of four different emotions.

These are the four layers that are …

Ever-Present, Matthew Oberski Apr 2015

Ever-Present, Matthew Oberski

Photography Senior Thesis Projects

This series is a contemporary interpretation of post-mortem photography, depicting the relationship between the physical and metaphysical remnants of life. The scenes are absent of a resident, showing only what remains, while the fabric portraits represent the ethereal vestige, the intangible memory friends and family hold on to. The corresponding paper reviews my photographic journey and details my processes necessary to create this body of work. Death is not always an easy subject to confront; with this project, I ask viewers to examine their own mortality and accept death’s inevitability.

Picturing “Doing Gender”, Danielle Lutz Oct 2014

Picturing “Doing Gender”, Danielle Lutz

Photography Senior Thesis Projects

This project explores the idea of “Doing Gender,” a term coined by sociologists Candace West and Don Zimmerman. The photographic series is comprised of diptychs in which I photographed people performing a feminine gender performance, as well as a masculine one. By exploring gender in this way and capturing it on camera, I have illustrated ways in which gender is a learned performance. This paper details the methods used to create this project, as well as its intentions as an analysis of gender performance.
